    For Immediate Release Date: July 2014 Donation of Life Jackets During the spring of 2014 – the Calgary and Edmonton Power and Sail Squadrons donated lifejackets to The Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories, for their Lifejacket Loaner Station Programs in parks around Alberta. Boating is an essential part of life for millions of Canadians. According to the Canadian Safe Boating Council, 89 percent of recreational boaters who drown each and year across Canada were not wearing a lifejacket. Most of these drownings occur in small open power boats, accounting for 60 percent of these preventable deaths. A majority of these victims were males between the ages of 19 and 35, out for a day of fishing. An average of 140 unnecessary drownings occur every year. Many boaters who drown believe they are good swimmers, so they feel that having a lifejacket on board and within easy reach is good enough. Most drownings happen unexpectedly when small boats capsize or someone falls overboard! This is why the Edmonton and Calgary Power and Sail Squadrons have donated 40 lifejackets to The Lifesaving Society’s Lifejacket Loaner Station Program. ‘ … The Edmonton and Calgary Power and Sail Squadrons donated these lifejackets to help improve boating safety awareness in Alberta. We believe in the boating safety message: ‘Choose it. Use it. The presence of blue-green algae in recreational water causes unpleasant aesthetics. Exposure to some toxin-producing blue-green algae may pose potential health risks to public. There have been increased public awareness and health concerns as a result of increased research over the past 20 years, recent monitoring efforts, as well as the general public becoming educated on the matter. In 2010 and 2011, Alberta Health Services initiated a cyanobacteria monitoring program for shallow water adjacent to beaches and issued public health advisories based on visual inspection. The findings revealed that microcystins (MCYSTs), one group of toxins produced by cyanobacteria, dominate in Alberta’s lakes and reservoirs. In order to inform the residents to safely use public beaches and implement better public health management, Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services along with other governmental departments and public health laboratories conducted the program of Alberta Cyanobacteria Beach Monitoring for Public Health in 2012 and 2013.     Calgary River Access Strategy Report Back: What We Heard November 30, 2016 Project overview The purpose of this project is to respond to Notice of Motion NM2016-20 “Calgary River Access Strategy”. This strategy will ensure easier, safer, legal and environmentally friendly river access along the Bow and Elbow rivers. The project will prepare a policy report and implementation plan that will include: High level policy statements The identification of stakeholders Further public access points Terms of public access Continued public safety consideration Delivery models Capital and operational costs required Potential bylaw amendments required The rivers are integral to Calgarians’ sense of community and are enjoyed by a multitude of user groups and tourists. The 2013 floods had a devastating effect and resulted in the loss of trailer access points, going from 8 down to only 2 current access points. Further the 2013 Flood contributed to a shift in river bottom channels and the creation of gravel bars which have the potential to be misused and impact sensitive fish habitats. Knowing that river users could potentially increase, it is important to create a strategy that will allow for better access to the river, respecting the needs of users, City business units, and Provincial and Federal governments. Engagement overview Parks wanted to gain feedback from stakeholders on the following input points: river access point locations and development priority; amenities required at river access points; other business opportunities that are related to rivers that should be explored. It was important to understanding what stakeholders’, directly impacted businesses, and river users, views and interests are in the development of a series of river access points along the Bow River.

    2019 Calgary Cycle Trip – July 15-18, 2019 Some of this year’s leaders have written up ride summaries which we hope will help next year’s leaders: From Penny Slevinsky: Monday, July 15 Green/Light Blue Ride Our 32 km ride departed from Grey Eagle Resort. We followed the Elbow River pathway as far as Fort Calgary then stopped for refreshments on the Hose and Hound Pub. After our rest break, we continued back to check into our accommodations and freshen up before the welcome banquet. Tuesday, July 16 Green/Light Blue Ride We woke up to a heavy rain but the weather ended up cooperating for our ride. The birds were singing as we road 26 km around the Glenmore Reservoir. We stopped many times to admire the scenery and watch the activity on the water such as sail boats, kayaks and paddle wheel boat. From Brian Hall: Monday, July 15 Dark Blue ride: Grey Eagles to Alforno along the Elbow and Bow Rivers (approx. 33 km.) The leader of this ride got lost once, fortunately rescued by the co-host, and fell off his bike once. What a performance! The rest of the bikers were well behaved. We had a ride-along, a four-pawed, furry canine complete with Doggles. Coffee and sweets were consumed downtown at the Alforno restaurant. The return trip was highlighted by the usual struggle, only partially successful, to climb the Sandy Beach hill. Wednesday, July 17 Dark Blue Ride: Fish Creek east and west banks of the Bow River (45 km.) Eight riders completed this ride on a lovely, mild day.
