The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) first opened in 1969 within Gyeongbokgung Research and Publication Team Palace (the royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty). In 1973, it was relocated to the East Wing of Seokjojeon Hall within Deoksugung Palace (the royal palace for the king of Joseon during the Japanese occupation). Then in 1986, the museum moved to Gwacheon and reopened with international-level facilities and an outdoor ■ Facilities sculpture park, beginning a new chapter in the history of Korea’s art culture. In 2017, the MMCA came up with an expansive museum education platform where contemporary art meets Program No. of sessions No. of participants visitors through cultural programs. What’s more, MMCA Gwacheon also successfully hosted the “2017 MMCA Festival: On the Road to Cultural events on Culture Days (Jan.-Dec.) 134 21,483 Art,” which served as a venue for a culture and art festival that offers a comprehensive artistic experience embracing a range of genres such as exhibition, architecture, movie, performance, and education. Total 168 83,239 Similarly, MMCA Seoul operated specialized programs reflecting the theme of “an open museum at the heart of the city.” The Art Fab Lab Creative Workshop, the talks and conversations aimed at spreading the discourses and themes related to exhibitions, and architectural field trip programs—these participation-based events provide visitors with diverse opportunities to relish culture while expanding and experimenting with the museum experience. At the same time, the 2017 Children’s Day special programs reflected the “One Museum” strategy: Each of the MMCA branches developed and operated distinct museum education and cultural programs that make good use of their unique spaces while maintaining unity as essentially one MMCA program. As active players, children and families completed these programs on their own, building upon their experiences of the exhibitions, and the participants expressed great satisfaction afterwards.
