    P o n t o n e PRESS RELEASE G A L L E R Y Kim Bumsu Sacred Cinema 12 April – 5 May 2019 Pontone Gallery is proud to present, for the first time in the UK, an exhibition by South Korean artist Kim Bumsu. Trained in his homeland and the United States, Kim’s work has been extensively shown in the Far East and Europe. This is an exclusive opportunity to experience his idiosyncratic and intriguing mixed- media constructions. The artist makes wall-mounted ‘light boxes’, fabricated from acrylic sheet, exposed film stock and LED lighting. Strips of old and discarded film are cut up and arranged to create large, complex collages, which are backlit by the Hidden Emotion V | 2016 | Movie Film, Acrylic, LED | 45 x 45 x 8 cm (17.5 x 17.5 x 3 in) LEDs within the boxes. Multi-coloured, pixellated patterns, reminiscent of mandalas and sacred geometries, create a glowing, kaleidoscopic effect. It is only on closer inspection that the nature of the source material is revealed. The viewer discovers a plethora of tiny and intriguing images, some recognisable, others less so. The cutting and pasting process, intrinsic to making the collages, corresponds with that of the film editor, who assembles fragments of information to make a coherent whole. Kim Bumsu’s compositions assimilate the disparate nature of their components and unite them into something new. The artist salvages and re-purposes that which is lost or unwanted. Kim explains this as an act of ‘romanticism’ that ‘arouses compassion’. Wishing to rescue what has been abandoned, his fractured re-making of lost narratives reminds us of the pre-digital, analogue age and its particularly tangible pleasures.

This field exploration followed a first research trip to Japan, organized in December 2016 with the complicity of Setouchy Circus Factory, and a second one held in Ethiopia, in partnership with Fekat Circus, in February-March 2018. This research trip took place from 4th to 10th October 2018, in the frame of the Seoul Street Arts Festival–the largest street arts festival in Korea–and the Performing Arts Market Seoul (PAMS), which hosted a European focus on the occasion, organized in close relation and with the support of the European Commission.

    Burlington Economic Development leads Trade Mission, Sister-Cities visit to South Korea The City of Burlington Economic Development Department wrapped up a lively year of industry activity in 2019 with a 4-day trade mission to South Korea, where we visited with multiple companies, trade organizations, local governments and universities. It was a productive trip that is already yielding results and commerce heading into 2020. Why go abroad to recruit? First, let’s be clear: Burlington’s primary strategy for growing jobs and investment is to work with our existing companies and entrepreneurs to help them be strong, growing enterprises. However, a comprehensive strategy does not rely on a single method to fulfill its goals. This is where business recruitment fits in – specifically international business recruitment. In the last 15 years, attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has emerged as a strategy to meet new investment targets and ‘reshore’ manufacturing. North Carolina and Burlington have experienced significant success attracting FDI. For example: North Carolina saw $15 Billion in new foreign direct investment (FDI) from 2007 to 2016 Burlington Metro Area exported almost $300 Million worth of products in 2016 Since 2016 50% of the Burlington Metro Areas projects are FDI projects These FDI projects represent $144 Million in investment and 170 jobs Why Korea? Burlington and North Carolina have some legitimate Korean bona-fides and a budding, fruitful relationship. Companies like SK, Doosan, Kioti, CS Carolina and LS already have significant facilities in North Carolina and offer promise for more growth. North Carolina now has an international economic development office in Korea specifically to assist in recruiting these firms.

    1. Introduction According to UNCHS1) data, the one-way commuting time in Seoul was about 60 minutes in 1998, while that in Tokyo was 45 minutes and that in New York was 32 minutes. In general, a city’s competitiveness is often measured by the commuting patterns and commuting time as well as some other economic variables such as Gross Regional Domestic Product(GRDP). Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the commuting not only in terms of time, but also flow. In order to explore commuting patterns, geographic classification is very Commuting Analysis in the Seoul Metropolitan Statistical Area important, which defines the spatial commuting boundary of a city. Thus, the Metropolitan Statistical Areas(MSAs) is used in this paper. It was defined by cross-commuting rates, population, and population density, which is quite similar to the criteria of a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas(SMSAs) in the United States. Then, the commuting inflows and outflows are considered using In-Out tabulation(often called origin/destination). From the In-Out tabulation matrix, the business and resident areas were able to be classified. Accordingly, the method of commuting is inspected across regions to see any potentially spatial constraint. For example, whether or not more people would use public transportation in the central business districts. In 1973, it was relocated to the East Wing of Seokjojeon Hall within Deoksugung Palace (the royal palace for the king of Joseon during the Japanese occupation). Then in 1986, the museum moved to Gwacheon and reopened with international-level facilities and an outdoor ■ Facilities sculpture park, beginning a new chapter in the history of Korea’s art culture.

    AEW RESEARCH A Focus on Greater Seoul Logistics ASIA PACIFIC | OCTOBER 2020 The logistics market in Greater Seoul has grown rapidly in the last few years on the back of a rapid expansion in the e-commerce sector. E-commerce has thrived due to unique features such as the high internet penetration rate as well as a densely populated city area. While significant investment has already been made into the logistics sector, the scope for more growth is substantial and warrants further attention. Underlying consumer trends will translate into sustained demand for Grade A logistics facilities by e-commerce players, retailers and third-party logistics players (3PLs) in the medium term. At the same time, the limited availability of Grade A stock has led to an undersupplied environment, creating opportunities for investment strategies across the risk/return spectrum. In this two-part paper, we outline (A) the positive consumption trends and (B) the underlying favorable fundamentals of the Greater Seoul logistics market that continue to encourage significant investment into the sector. (A) New consumption trends leading to increased demand for Grade A facilities (dry & cold) include: • Further growth in online sales, including a wider volume and variety of goods • Larger segments of the population ordering fresh foods and groceries online • Increasing healthcare and pharmaceutical demands • Acceleration of e-commerce growth and expansion of inventory due to COVID-19 (B) The favorable fundamentals of the Greater Seoul logistics market include: • Pent-up demand for Grade A facilities as a result of a large proportion of obsolete stock • Varying supply trends by submarket could present a favorable rental outlook for some areas • Increasing demand for cold storage coupled with limited supply should result in upward rental pressure in the near to medium term These favorable factors are expected to translate to attractive total returns for the sector and should continue to invite significant investment from domestic and cross-border investors in the medium-term.
