NFL Draft 2019 Scouting Report: WR Parris Campbell, Ohio State 2019 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT MARCH 11, 2019 NFL Draft 2019 Scouting Report: WR Parris Campbell, Ohio State *WR grades can and will change as more information comes in from Pro Day workouts, Wonderlic test results leaked, etc. We will update ratings as new info becomes available. *WR-B stands for "Big-WR," a classification we use to separate the more physical, downfield/over-the- top, heavy-red-zone-threat-type WRs. Our WR-S/"Small-WRs" are profiled by our computer more as slot and/or possession-type WRs who are typically less physical and rely more on speed/agility to operate underneath the defense and/or use big speed to get open deep...they are not used as weapons in the red zone as much. I thought this would be a more difficult scouting report, but it ended up pretty simple and straightforward. Going into this report, I had previewed Campbell’s work late last season and ahead of the 2019 NFL Combine – looking at a small sampling of his work, and without having the true workout numbers. From my previews, I didn’t feel like I had a solid grip on what I was seeing. I said on a Combine preview podcast in February that I was torn…unsure whether Campbell might be an ‘A’ NFL talent, or maybe just a solid ‘C’. He looked good in a preview, not amazing or terrible…just good, no real red flags but no obvious items that caught my attention. Ohio State had a higher output offense and Campbell was one of the pieces among an ensemble of NFL prospect wide receivers. There was also ‘tale’ of him being a 4.3 runner, but many times those are just ‘tales’. He was obviously fast, but how fast? Well, Campbell blazed a 4.31 40-time and put any speed doubt to rest – that gets your attention, if he didn’t have it before. I hit the tape for a deeper look to see if he was all speed and no great technical skill, but there was no issue there either. Campbell has a well-rounded skill set. He can work the slot just fine/great or he could be a #2 WR on the outside if needed. He brings some versatility. It was the tape that ultimately pushed me closer to the ‘A’ camp (though knowing he was a low 4.3s runner helped for sure). It’s easy to see Campbell’s short pass plays turned big gains, because of his speed…but what I was not prepared for was how nice a worker Campbell is on the interior. The more I watched, the more I saw that Campbell is very comfortable running short crossing routes over the middle or running short stop routes – a quick dash off the line, quick stop and turn…and taking the hit from the recovering, incoming corner. Because Campbell has great speed, corners have to lay off him a bit and that gives Campbell room to operate short, and to his credit…Campbell works the short game. A lot of ‘speedy’ wide receivers just want to run safe routes to stay out/away from the blind hits after the catch. Campbell takes them on as needed. I didn’t realize he was such a worker. College Football Metrics| 1 2019 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT MARCH 11, 2019 When you combine his 4.31 speed with his short game ability/toughness, I think he’s a pretty lethal NFL weapon…and, perhaps, more suited for the NFL than college. He’s a touchdown waiting to happen after any catch. He is a sweet jet sweep option. He will burn you deep if you play up on him. He’s as well- rounded, dangerous a wide receiver as there is in this draft with the gift of being a blazing 4.31 runner. He’s almost ‘can’t miss’ for the NFL. Campbell is a smart, light-hearted/smiling but confident young man. Handles interviews pretty well. Is not full of himself or timid/passive. Same guy on the field – not ultra-aggressive or showy, but confident and willing to do some dirty work. I see nothing but positives here. I worried negatives were hiding as I went into this, and I was looking for them – but there aren’t any here. Parris Campbell, Through the Lens of Our WR Scouting Algorithm: The toughest opponents/defenses Campbell faced in 2018 were TCU, Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan, and Washington. In these five games, Campbell averaged: 6.4 receptions, 87.4 yards, 1.0 TDs per game. His output was better against better competition. Washington has several NFL Draft prospect DBs, and they were paying extra attention to Campbell, and yet Parris caught 11 passes for 71 yards and a TD. 23 carries for 210 yards and 2 TDs (9.1 yards per carry) in his college career. #1 in the Big Ten in kick return average (27.8 yards) in 2016, when he was a return man and despite no return TD to boost his average. Campbell worked special teams coverage as a freshman and sophomore. He had at least one tackle in seven of his first 8 games before he was moved from special teamer to part-time offense and returns mid-sophomore season. 2019 NFL Combine Measurables: 5’11.7”/205, 9.5” hands, 32.25” arms 4.31 40-time, 4.03 shuttle, DNP three-cone (but that shuttle score says the three-cone would be pretty nice) 11 bench reps, 40.0” vertical, 11’3” broad jump College Football Metrics| 2 2019 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT MARCH 11, 2019 The Historical WR Prospects to Whom Parris Campbell Most Compares Within Our System: I didn’t see an Odell Beckham-like ruthless killer wide receiver in tape, but I do see that the numbers and metrics in our system would generate a comp to OBJ for Campbell. Corey Coleman makes more sense…possibly the ‘great’ Corey Coleman I (and the old Browns Moneyball guys) were hoping for will be found with Parris Campbell…both super-athletic, but Campbell not as character flawed. WR Draft Last First College H H W Power Speed Hands Score Yr. A score of 8.50+ is where we see a stronger correlation of a Small-WR going on to become NFL good/great/elite. A score of 10.00+ is more rarefied air in our system and indicates a greater probability of becoming an elite NFL Small- WR. All of the WR ratings are based on a 0–10 scale, but a player can score negative, or above a 10.0 in certain instances. Overall WR score = A combination of several on-field performance measures, including refinement for strength of opponents faced, mixed with all the physical measurement metrics, and rated historically in our database. “Power-Strength” = A combination of unique metrics surrounding physical size profiling, bench press strength, etc. High scorers here project to be more physical, better blockers, and less injury-prone. “Speed-Agility” = A combination of unique metrics surrounding speed, agility, physical size, mixed with some on-field performance metrics. High scorers here project to have a better YAC and show characteristics to be used as deep threats/to create separation. College Football Metrics| 3 2019 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT MARCH 11, 2019 “Hands” = A combination of unique metrics surrounding on-field performance in college, considering the strength of opponents played. Furthermore, this data considers some physical profiling for hand size, etc. High scorers here have a better track record of college statistical performance. Everything combining to project catch-abilities for the next level. 2019 NFL Draft Outlook: Campbell is tracking as a 2nd-round pick in most mock drafts I see currently. I think he could sneak into the 1st-round. If D.J. Moore got into the 1st-round last year, then Parris Campbell deserves to. It’s a loaded WR group this year, so I’d estimate he goes between picks #20-40. NFL Outlook: The famous ‘depends upon where he lands’. He could be Rookie of the Year material if he takes Randall Cobb’s role in Green Bay. He could be D.O.A. for years stuck in Buffalo. Eventually, Campbell should be a Pro Bowl level player in the NFL. He has all the tools and no character flaws detected. Copyright Statement Copyright at date and time signed below by R.C. Fischer All rights reserved. • Indianapolis Colts Fell in Love with Character, Potential of Ohio State’S Parris Campbell
Indianapolis Colts Fell In Love With Character, Potential Of Ohio State’s Parris Campbell When the Colts went on the clock last Friday with the 59th overall pick in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft, general manager Chris Ballard stood before Indianapolis executives and staffers from the franchise’s war room inside the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center and kicked off the discussion. After the Colts traded down with the Cleveland Browns, swapping second-round picks from 46th to 49th and picking up the 144th overall selection in the fifth round, Indianapolis took former TCU defensive end Ben Banogu (6-3, 250) and had options 10 slots later. As the seven minutes started to tick, Parris Campbell was the first name out of Ballard’s mouth — and the former Ohio State H-back ended up the only one in mind before Colts brass unanimously agreed on the 6-0, 205-pounder. “We liked Parris all the way through the process,” Ballard said May 1 in an all-access video documenting the NFL draft from Indianapolis. “And (head coach) Frank (Reich) loved him.” Before the Colts made it official, Indianapolis gathered April 18 and dissected Campbell as a prospect — which led to rave reviews from Reich. Beyond the numbers from his breakout senior season in 2018 — Campbell caught a school-record 90 passes for 1,063 yards (11.8 average) with a long of 78 and 12 touchdowns across all 14 games — he had an X-factor trait. After conversations with Buckeyes wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, Reich was sold on Campbell.
