The Nathan Cummings Collection is a spirited, vigorous, constantly evolving thing. The selection on view here gives an idea of the personality of the collection. Nathan Cummings has never been the kind of person to have something assembled for him. His collection contains those things that he has sought out and found himself, things he has admired for their inherent qualities as opposed to their formal association with one school of art or another. This collection is surely a source of satisfaction and pleasure to Nathan Cummings and his willingness to share it with the public, making it accessible through exhibition and loans underlines his commitment to the importance of art for all people. His continuing association with the Metropolitan Museum — now as Honorary Trustee — and the support he has given it are other facets of this com mitment for which we are all grateful. A Family Foundation: Looking to the Future, Honoring the Past Preface This (1995) is the hundredth anniversary of Nathan Cummings' birth. His descendants collaborated to make this foundation a living, vibrant institution. It is a memorial which embodies his commitment to service and draws together the efforts of his children and grandchildren. For us, it has been a profound challenge and opportunity. Foundations play a unique role in American society. They support the network of non-profit organizations providing human services to the poor and disadvantaged, as well as cultural sustenance to people of all economic levels. Within the larger constellation of American foundations, there are over 20,000 family foundations. Just as each family is unique, each family foundation has a different viewpoint with differing areas of focal interest, all enlivening the democratic debate. In the next 40 years, approximately $10 trillion will be transferred from one generation of Americans to another. Historically, such transfers have been opportunities for the creation of new family foundations. When our grandfather, Nathan Cummings, died twelve years ago in 1985, he endowed the foundation in which we now participate. In our experience, we have had the joy of helping many people to better their lives, and assisting many institutions to strengthen their capacity to serve the public interest. The financial support we have provided, the lessons we have learned, and the satisfaction we have taken justifies the many hundreds of hours that our family has devoted to this enterprise. We have built a significant program, evaluated its effectiveness, and continue to modify it as appropriate. -

This extraordinary selection from various private collections features the rare Picasso bronze sculpture Coq, making its first appearance at auction, along with a diverse range of portraits of the artist’s female muses, reflecting the remarkably strong market performance of these iconic paintings in recent years. The sale of the nine works is expected to realize a combined total in excess of $34 million. The star lot, Coq (pictured page one, estimate: $10-15 million), was first modeled in 1932 and cast in the 1950s. It dates from the years Picasso spent at his chateau at Boisgeloup in Normandy, producing some of the most important paintings and sculptures of his long and prolific career. The secluded estate was a haven for the artist and his young mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter, with whom he had begun a passionate, clandestine affair some years earlier. -
