An Auckland nudist beach is set to lose its public walkway. The walkway, extending from Glover Park to Gentlemen’s Bay in the suburb of St Heliers, will be removed at a cost of $38,000 due to erosion and unstable ground conditions. Public access to Gentlemen’s Bay will remain available from neighbouring Ladies Bay and Karaka Bay, but only at low tide. Gentlemen’s Bay is located below Glover Park between Achilles Pt and West Tamaki Pt at the coastal edge of St Heliers. The small, sheltered bay with views across the Waitemata Harbour is one of Auckland’s male nudist beaches. The land around the steps leading down to the beach has a history of slippage and coastal erosion and has been closed since 2006 due to safety issues. However, people have continued to bypass orange hazard mesh fencing blocking the path, to walk to the beach via the Glover Park entrance. On May 25 the Orakei Local Board approved for the pathway to be dismantled and perma- nently blocked off with planting. Orakei Local Board chairman Colin Davis said the access had become dangerous. ‘‘This cliff area is subject to erosion and the ground is unstable,’’ Davis said. ‘‘The board had a legal duty to warn people of potential risks and decided for safety reasons to close the access and remove the steps to the walkway,’’ he said. NOW RECRUITING FOR GREENWICH GARDENS, Pete Waldron from Glendowie, who walked through Glover Park most afternoons, said it was not unusual to see people heading down the access THE ORCHARDS AND THE POYNTON path to Gentlemen’s Bay. ‘‘I know it’s dangerous down there because of Metlifecare is a leading New Zealand owner Across our three villages, we are currently slips and people shouldn’t go down.’’ recruiting for: The decision to remove the beach access came andoperatorofretirementvillagesproviding following the submission of a geotech report to the supportiveenvironmentsthatempowerpeople Caregivers board. tolivethelifetheychoose. Giving high-needs mental health patients quick and easy access to psychiatrists is one way a new plan is improving health services in Auckland’s north and west. The Waitemata Primary and Community Services Plan was officially launched on May 18 but $5.1 million worth of projects were already under way. The plan was believed to be the largest collab- oration of its nature in the country, jointly pro- duced by Waitemata District Health Board and primary health organisations Waitemata PHO and Procare Health. The DHB funded health services and provided hospital-based services, while the PHOs provided care through general practices. While Waitemata had one of the longest life expectancies in the world, at 84.3 years, the plan was needed to make improvements in certain areas, Waitemata DHB deputy director of funding Tim Wood said. One in five people experienced mental illness, inequalities for Maori and Pacific people included a life expectancy 6.3 years less for Maori and 5.3 years less for Pacific people, and the health sector had ‘‘huge’’ financial constraints, Wood said. The plan was needed so the agencies could pro- vide a single, integrated healthcare system, DHB chief executive Dale Bramley said. summerset.co.nz/hobsonville ‘‘At the end of the day, they [patients] don’t care who the providers are.’’ The funding included $1.4m for primary mental health, with 800 extra packages of care for high- needs and complex patients.
