GOVEnNOR MARYLAND STATE POLICE June 26 I 1987 • The Honorable WillIam Donald Schaefer Governor of the State of Maryland State House Annapolis, Maryland 21404 • Dear Governor Schaefer: The Maryland State PolIce Is pleased to submit to you the 1986 Annual Report which reflects the services this Agency rendered to the citizens of Maryland during the year. • The Anti-Driving While IntoxIcated (OWl) efforts continue to be effec tive. In 1986, the percentage of alcohol related accidents was at an all time low of 47.5 percent. This was accomplished through the use of addi .Ional sobriety checkpoints and Increased patrols In areas targeted as havIng a high incIdence of alcohol related accidents. • The enforcement of the 55 National Maximum Speed LImIt (NMSL) was agaIn a prIorIty for the fIeld forces. During 1986, arrests for exceedIng 55 mph Increased 6.9 percent over the previous year. The Agency's commitment to the 55 NMSL Is weI I documented and the innovatIve enforcement strategIes employed by the Maryland State Police have been adopted by many police agen • cies throughout the natIon. Drug Interdictions Increased significantly In 1986 with large quantities of drugs, monIes, and vehIcles seIzed. Agency personnel were recognIzed for their accomplishments In drug interdiction arrests, and the State Pol Ice became one of the leadIng law enforcement agencIes in the country In drug Interdiction. • Additionally, the Agency maintained Its high performance standards in law enforcement support services SU9h as special investigations, crime pre vention, crIme laboratory analysis, medIcal transports, auto safety enforce ment and records maIntenance. • The State PolIce Is proud of its 1986 accomplIshments, and will contInue Its dedIcatIon to quality servIce.
