The late Lady Charlotte Schreiber formed during her lifetime an extensive collection of the Playing-Cards of various countries, and, dying in 1895, bequeathed the collection to the Trustees of the British Museum. In accordance with the terms of the legacy, all those items were retained which were not strictly duplicates of others already in the Museum, the remainder being returned to the executors. The portion retained constitutes a very important addition to the collection which previously belonged to the department.* The present separate catalogue of the addition to the national collection thus made by Lady C. Schreiber's bequest, has been prepared by Mr. F. M. O'Donoghue, Assistant-Keeper of Prints and Drawings in the Museum, and is published by the Trustees in accordance with an undertaking made on their behalf to the executors of the testatrix when her bequest was accepted. Among the most important items in the collection are, in the Italian section, Mitelli's tarocchino and "II Passa Tempo" packs; Fresehot's cards of Venetian Heraldry, 1707 ; and two interesting Ombre packs, probably executed in Venice, one hand-painted on plates of silver and enclosed in a silver case, the other engraved on brass plates and contained in a case of the same material.

ARAB TIMES, SUNDAY, AUGUST 8, 2021 NEWS/FEATURES 13 People & Places People Meghan launches project No grounds for my removal: Mr Spears LOS ANGELES, Aug 7, (AP): Britney Spears’ father said in a court fi ling Friday that there are “no grounds whatsoever” for removing him from the conservator- ship that controls her money and affairs. James Spears “has dutifully and faithfully served as the conservator of his daughter’s estate without any blemishes on his record,” the fi ling said. James Spears’ fi ling also says that court-appointed professional Jodi Montgomery, who oversees Britney Spears’ life decisions while her father handles her money, called him, distraught, last month and sought his help with his daughter’s mental health struggles. Montgomery and her lawyer said in response that James Spears “misrepresented and manipulated” the call to use it to his own advantage. James Spears’ fi ling came in response to court papers fi led a day earlier by Britney Spears’ new attorney Matthew Rosengart, which requested an emergency hearing as soon as possible to suspend him from the conservatorship. James Spears said Rosengart “does not (and cannot) specify what the wrongdoing is” to prompt such a suspension. Spears James Spears stepped aside from the part of the conserva- torship that controls his daughter’s life decisions in 2019, with Montgomery taking over, though her of- fi cial status remains temporary. oRrGrNoF THE.SWISSNATIONAL CARP-PLAY ':JAS9" (ln variouslibrary archived research papers the following is recorded) Playingcards were inventedin ancientChina. They were foundin Chinaas earlyas the 9th century duringthe Tang Dynasty (618-907) The first referenceto card gamesin worldhistory dates from the 9th century, when the Collectionof Miscellaneaat Duyang, written by TangDynasty writer Su E, describedPrincess Tongchang (daughter of EmperorYizong of fang) playingthe "leafgame" in 868with members of theWei clan(the family of the princess'husband) The Song Dynasty(960-1279) scholar Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072)asserted that playingcards and card gamesexisted at leastsince the midTang Dynasty, and associated their invention with the simultaneous developmentof usingsheets or pagesinstead of paperrolls as a writingmedium. The firstknown book on cardscalled Yezi Gexi was allegedlywritten by a Tang era woman, and was commentedon by Chinesewriters of subsequentdynasties. By the 11thcentury, playing cards could be foundthroughout the Asiancontinent. During the Ming Dynasty(1368-1 644), characters from popular novels such as theWater Margin were widely featured on thefaces of playingcards. Playingcards first entered Europe in the late14th century, probably from Mamluk Egypt, with suits (sets of cardswith matching designs) very similar to the tarotsuits of Swords,Staves, Cups and Coins(also knownas disks),and pentacles, and whichare stillused in traditionalltalian, Spanish and Portuguese decks. The first documentary evidence is a banon theiruse in 1367,Bern,
