Introduction

The present documentation serves as a guideline for the installation of the windream client. Since windream version 3.6 has been released, the following installation types can be executed via the windream client setup:

• Client installation – standard: The windream client is installed locally with the driver for the windream drive (VFS-driver) on every workstation computer (simulating a network drive). • Client installation on server – local server share drive: The driver for the windream drive (VFS-driver) is installed once and locally on a server which can be accessed by the clients (shared server drive). The windream client is installed with a filter driver (Windows 2000 or higher required) and without VFS-driver on the workstations. • Client installation on a terminal server: In this case, the windream client and the driver for the windream drive (VFS-driver) are installed as terminal server network drivers on a terminal server. This way, the windream client application is available in the Windows terminal server environments as provided by and in Citrix MetaFrame as well.

Depending on the question which type of driver is installed for getting access to the windream drive respectively which of the mentioned installation types are to be executed, the windream client setup can be run in the standard mode or in an extended mode.

Installation requirements and procedure The installation description first explains the steps to be executed before the installation of the windream client at the workstations. Depending on the used (Windows 2000, Windows XP or Vista), different system requirements are to be fulfilled, and additional components as well as specific system settings are required.

The requirements to be fulfilled for the installation on a shared server or on a terminal server are explained with the description of the respective installation procedure.

The respective installations are described in separate chapters.

• Client installation - standard – p. 13 f. • Client installation – local server share drive – p. 18 f. • Client installation on a terminal server - p. 31 f. 2 windream Client Installation

Update installation If you have already installed an earlier windream version, you can also execute an update installation via the setup routine.

Note: A switch from a standard client with local server drive to a client with access to the server share incl. filter driver (or the other way round) is not possible via the setup program or via an update installation. In this case, the client application must be uninstalled and the computer must be rebooted. Then, you will have to select the components mentioned in the extended mode and within a new installation process.

Further descriptions This documentation can also be found on the installation CD. The directory for the client installation also contains an HTML readme file named Readme.htm. This file allows to access all windream documentations provided with the installation CD. windream Client Installation 3

windream client computer system requirements

We will now describe the requirements for the installation of the windream client. These requirements are valid for the installation of the windream workstations. The system requirements to be fulfilled for the installation of the server drive on a server share respectively the installation of a windream terminal server network driver are described separately.

System requirements Consider the following minimum system requirements to ensure that the system will work properly.

• Computer with at least 100 mailboxes free hard disk space and • at least one free drive letter for the windream drive.

Operating system

• Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 or • Business Ultimate.

Further requirements – additional components Before installing the windream client application, it is required to install specific additional components. The windream installation CD contains the required components, which can be installed from the CD directly.

• Microsoft 6.0 or higher with Active Desktop must be installed. • Microsoft Scripting Host 5.0 with Java/VB-support and Microsoft Script Control 5.0 must be installed (for executing scripts in windream).

Optional components:

• Microsoft Management Console 1.2 must be installed, if administrative tasks with the windream Management Console shall be executed on this computer. • Microsoft XML 3 (msxml3.dll version 8.10.8303.0) must be installed. This file can be found on the installation CD. On setup execution, the system will check whether MSXML has already been installed on the target system. If not, MSXML will have to be installed manually by executing the EXE-file. • Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher must be installed for displaying and printing the documentation. 4 windream Client Installation

Note: If the installation of Microsoft Scripting Host should be required, this has to be executed before installing the windream client. If you install this component during the windream setup, answer the question displayed whether the computer shall be rebooted with No, reboot later. Otherwise, setup will be cancelled at this point.

If the installation of Microsoft Script Control is required, this has to be executed before installing the windream client. Due to an error in the Script Control setup, the predefined path (for example C:\Program Files\Script Control) in the dialog box displayed cannot be changed via the Browse button, but only via a manual entry. Otherwise, the installation of the Script Control will be cancelled with an error. Thus, change the predefined path manually (for example C:\Program Files to D:\Programs).

How to install the additional components 1. Insert the windream CD into your CD-ROM drive of your computer. If the autorun function is enabled, file Autorun.inf will be launched automatically. 2. Select menu item Installation on the start page. 3. Click menu item Additional components. 4. Select the menu item of the first additional component you want to install. 5. Repeat step 4 until all missing components have been installed.

During the following setup process, the system will check whether the required components are available. If important components are missing, a respective message will be displayed in the System check dialog box. The setup process will be cancelled at this point and must be continued after having installed the missing components.

System settings under Windows 2000, Windows XP and Vista After the installation of the additional components, it is required to make the following system settings on Windows NT 4.0, 2000, or XP workstations.

Note: The installing user must be a member of the administrators group to be able to install services and drivers. We recommend an installation under the "Administrator" ID. windream Client Installation 5

Identification of the connected windream workstation Before starting the windream setup, it is required to identify the connected Windows workstations in the network. Depending on the current system configuration (meaning whether a domain controller is available or not), different procedures are necessary.

If a domain controller is available, the current client computer must have an account in the Windows domain from which the windream DMS-service can also receive the windream authentication information. The user account information can be received from:

• a) Windows Active Directory (WinNT-Provider) • b) Windows Active Directory (LDAP-Provider)

Further information can be found in the Readme.txt file on the server CD.

If no domain controller with Active Directory is used, the Windows user account must be created with the same name and password on the windream server and on the windream client, and it must be assigned to the windream administrators group. This configuration is only possible when using the WinNT-provider.

Note: The quick user account switching under Windows XP Professional (available if the computer is not member of a domain) and the simultaneous logon of several users to Windows Vista is not supported. Especially a user B might get access to the documents of a user A in specific cases and mixed system environments (XP and Vista), if the VFS-service has not been stopped before switching.

We will now describe how to switch the network identification of a client under Windows XP. Under Windows 2000 and Vista, this is executed in the same way via the respective commands of the operating system.

How to identify connected workstations with available domain controller 1. Open the dialog box for configuring the network connections, e.g. using command Start>Settings>Network connections. 2. Open the system properties via the network identification command of the Advanced menu. 3. Click Change on the computer name tab page to change the domain. 4. Click the option of being a member of a domain and enter the name of the domain which admnisters the rights for the windream server in the Domain field. 6 windream Client Installation

5. Click OK. 6. Reboot your computer.

How to identify the connected workstations without domain controller 1. Open the dialog box for configuring the network connections, e.g. using command Start>Settings>Network connections. 2. Open the system properties via the network identification command of the Advanced menu. 3. Click Change on the computer name tab page to change the workstation. 4. Select the option of being a member of a work group and enter the name of the desired work group. 5. Click OK. 6. Reboot your computer. windream Client Installation 7

Executing the windream client installation

The following installations can be executed with windream client setup version 3.6 or higher:

• client installation – standard, • client installation on server – local, shared server drive, • client installation on a terminal server.

In any case, the installation of the windream server must be executed separately via the respective setup program.

Client installation – standard The windream server has been installed and is ready to operate. The windream client will be installed on the connected workstations with local client VFS-driver. For this installation type, you execute a standard client installation on the respective workstations (see also chapter "windream client installation - standard", p. 13 f.).

Client installation on server - local server share drive The windream server has been installed and is ready to operate. The VFS-driver shall be installed as a local server share drive. These shares connect the workstations with a drive letter. Depending on the system configuration, the driver can be installed on the windream server itself or on one or several separate servers (server shares). For this installation type, you execute the client setup on these servers in the extended mode (see also chapter "Client installation - local server share drive", p. 18 f.).

Then, you execute the client setup in the extended mode on the connected workstations and install the windream client there without VFS-driver (see also chapter "Client installation - local server share drive", p. 18 f.).

Client installation on terminal server The windream server has been installed and is ready to operate. The windream client will be installed on a terminal server including the terminal server network driver (VFS-driver for terminal server). Depending on the system configuration, the windream client can be installed on one or several terminal servers. In this installation procedure, you execute the client setup on these servers in the extended mode (see also chapter "Client installation on terminal servers", p. 31). 8 windream Client Installation

Client setup – installation modes The client setup routine can be executed in two different modes:

• Standard, • Extended.

The selected mode depends on the question which driver type for access to the windream drive shall be installed and which of the client installations mentioned shall be executed.

Driver type for VFS-driver The driver for the windream drive (VFS-driver) will either be installed locally on each workstation (emulation of a network drive), locally and once on a server which can be accessed by the clients (server share drive) or as terminal server network driver.

Standard In this mode, the following components will be installed without the option of manual selections:

• DMS Connectivity, • Shell and search extensions, • Local network driver (standard).

The VFS-driver will be installed locally as a network driver on the client. The network drive will be connected to the windream drive by configuring a manual network mapping via the Windows Explorer.

Extended In this mode, a dialog for selecting the following components will be displayed:

• DMS Connectivity, • Shell and search extensions, • Local network driver (standard), • Local server share drive, • Access to server share (not for Windows 9x), • terminal server network driver.

windream components (extended mode) The components named DMS Connectivity and Shell and search extensions must always be installed on a windream client. Additionally, you must also select the desired component for the driver type to be installed. windream Client Installation 9

Local network driver (standard) This component installs the local network driver on a client and corresponds to the standard client installation.

Local server share drive This component installs the VFS-driver locally on a server. The drive will be shared. The associated workstations connect the share (e.g. \\Myserver\windream) with a free drive letter. A local VFS- driver installation is not required any more on these clients. The windream client will be installed via the client setup in the extended mode without selecting one of the driver components.

Access to the server share (not Windows 9x) On Windows 2000 or XP workstations, the filter driver required for access to the server share (not Windows 9x) has to be installed in addition to the DMS and Shell / search extension components. Further information can be found in chapter "Server share access", p. 27 and "Filter driver for Server share access", p. 27.

Terminal server network driver This component installs the VFS network driver on a terminal server. Additionally, the client components for DMS connectivity and shell / search extensions will be installed on the terminal server. The drive will be shared. The share (e.g \\Windream\Objects) will be connected with a free drive letter by the Teminal client users.

Note: If – during the client setup – a driver component is installed or updated, the computer must be rebooted after the installation. In other cases and as far as possible, a reboot will be avoided after a new installation.

During update installations of clients without windream driver installations, a reboot will become necessary, if windream modules are still active. This reboot might be avoided, if all windream programs (Control Center, retrieval, DocView, etc.) and all Explorer functions incl. Desktop Explorers have been terminated (via the taskmanager). In this case, the setup program must be started from the taskmanager.

The VFS-service (vfssvc) will be closed by the setup program automatically, but it can also be closed before executing an update from the NT service manager. In this case, the setup program must be started from the task manager to avoid a new Windows Explorer start.

A switch from a standard client with local server driver to a client installation with access to the server share including the driver is not possible via the setup program. For this, the client has to be uninstalled first and the computer has to be rebooted. Then, the 10 windream Client Installation

components have to be selected in the extended mode, if a new installation is executed.

Connecting the windream drive In order to enable windream functions like the document and folder properties, the context menu, the retrieval function or the Explorer views, the windream drive must be connected to a free drive letter (click right mouse button, click command to map the network drive).

The setup program will offer to map the drive automatically (if required, after a reboot). The drive to be connected depends on the driver type installed.

Local network driver (standard client) If the local network driver is installed, you will find a windream share named "Windream\Objects" which is simulated by the driver in the Network neighborhood.

Installation of a local server driver on a separate server (share drive) If a local server driver is installed on a separate server (/), a share named "windream" will automatically be created by the windream VFS-service on this server. This shared drive can be mapped on the client computer in the Network neighborhood.

The drive and the windream server information must be announced to the other windream modules on each client computer using function Select server>Edit... of the windream Control Center. The settings must either be entered manually there, or automatically via the button to create a new list from the Explorer network connections. This is a user-specific setting in the Windows Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. A detailed description of the server selector can be found in the windream user guide and in the online help.

Installation on terminal servers A "windream Terminal Server Network Driver" must be installed on the terminal server. First, a user who has logged on must map the windream drive once. This can also be executed via a logon script. The mapping named "Windream\Objects" which is simulated by the driver can then be found under the windream entry in the network neighborhood. windream Client Installation 11

Client setup – starting the installation If the Autostart of the CD-ROM drive has been enabled, the setup program will be started automatically. If it is disabled, start the setup program manually.

E:\setup\windream\client\setup.exe /WM_EXT

Computer reboot As far as possible, a reboot will be avoided. However, when executing an update installation, this will only be possible in certain cases, if the services (VFS-service) and processes (e.g. Explorer) are closed. 12 windream Client Installation

A reboot will always be necessary after having updated driver components.

If the setup program asks for a reboot at the end of the installation procedure, a new login must be executed after the reboot under the user ID with which the installation has been executed (e.g. administrator).

Then, the setup program will start automatically again to execute the required registrations and configurations and to connect the windream network drive with a drive letter.

If the setup program does not start automatically after the reboot, a reason may be that you have started the setup program from a network drive to which there has not been a connection so far. In this case, please start the windream client setup manually again. You will then receive a respective message.

If no driver component is selected in the client setup, a reboot will be avoided as far as possible. windream Client Installation 13

Update installation – windream client

windream offers to execute an update installation from a previous to the current version.

Note: If a previous windream version has already been installed on the target system, only an update installation can be executed. A complete new installation will only be possible after a complete uninstallation of the previous version.

How to execute an update installation 1. Close all windream services. 2. Launch the windream client setup from the installation CD (call setup.exe). 3. Confirm the question whether an update shall be executed with Yes. 4. Reboot your computer after the update installation (see also chapter "Computer reboot", page 15).

Note: After an update, it is required to map the windream drive with a free drive letter (see chapter "windream drive mapping", page 15). 18 windream Client Installation

Client installation - local server share drive

In order to install the server share drive, you first install the VFS-driver on the windream server (not recommended) or on another server. Then, you install the windream client on the connected workstations. The share (e.g.. \\Myserver\windream) must then be connected with a free drive letter on the windream client computers (see also chapter "Installing the windream client", p. 26).

Both installations are executed via the client setup program in the extended mode. See also chapter "Client setup – installation modes ", p. 8.

The installation of the windream server is executed via the windream server setup either on a separate computer or on the shared server.

System requirements The requirements which must be fulfilled for the installation of the windream client on the workstation computers can be found in chapter "windream client requirements", p. 3.

The following requirements are valid for the shared server.

System requirements for the shared server • Windows 2000 server with Service Pack 4 or • Windows 2003 Server with Service Pack 1.

Note: We do not recommend to install the driver on the windream server, but on one or several separate (shared) servers.

Possible problems of the VFS-driver may then lead to problems with the shared servers, but would not affect the windream server itself.

Thus, we recommend to choose a configuration similar to that explained in the following example: windream Client Installation 19

Figure 1: Configuration of a windream installation for a server share drive

In the following description, the shared server will be named as SHARESRV_1 and the windream server as WMDMSSRV.

Installing the server drive Start the setup program from the installation CD on the shared server in the extended mode. See also chapter "Client setup – starting the installation", p. 11.

windream setup complete The setup program indicates that the installation is complete with this dialog box.

Computer reboot After having completed the setup procedure, a reboot is required for refreshing and updating the configuration. Thus, the setup program will once again be started after the reboot to update the Registry and the configuration.

A respective message will be displayed, if the setup program cannot be started after the reboot automatically. This may for example happen, if you have launched the setup program from a network drive to which there was no connection at the time of the reboot. In this case, start the windream setup manually again (see also chapter "Client setup – starting the installation", p. 11). You can start the setup in the standard mode (see chapter "Client setup – installation modes", p. 8).

Note: During the computer reboot, you will have to log on with the same user account at the system under which you have also executed the installation (e.g. under the administrator-ID).

Starting the VFS-service After the installation, the VFS-service can be started after having confirmed a respective message, and the start type can be set to Automatical.

After the installation After the installation, you can change the preset name on the server share or adjust the number of threads to be started to the number of users who will access the drive (see chapter "The local server drive on the server share ", p. 23 and "Determining the number of threads for access to the drive ", p. 24).

Then, the windream client installation has to be executed on the connected client workstations (see chapter "Installing the windream client", p. 26).

The local server drive on the server share After the second start of the setup program, a local drive named "windream" occurs under the drive letter determined in the setup program. This drive cannot be accessed locally on the server. The 24 windream Client Installation

windream users known on the DMS-server can now map the share SHARESRV_1\windream on the workstations (map network drive).

By default, the share will be installed under the name "windream" and with a comment "windream server Share" on the shared server. These designators are determined via respective entries in the Registry and can be changed there. Before, you must close the windream VFS- service.

Changing the share designators in the Registry Under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\vfsdrv\Parameters\ you can change the name and the comment of the share.

Registry entry Value Share name: ShareName of type windream STRING Comment: ShareComment of windream server Share type STRING

After having changed the Registry entries, the server must be rebooted.

Determining the number of threads for access to the drive By default, a number of threads is preset via an entry in the Registry which can be started as a maximum. Generally, one thread per logged- in user is used. If more users log on to the drive than have been determined in entry MaxThreads, several users will share one thread which may lead to a performance loss. To avoid this, you can adjust the number of threads to be started. A value up to 256 is allowed.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\vfsdrv\Devices\VfsccomDevice\1

MaxThreads=Dword:00000008

The preset number of threads will be created directly on the driver side and on the service side as well, when the VFS-service is started. We recommend to calculate not more than two users per thread. If more users shall work with the drive, we recommend to configure a further server share.

After having made the changes in the Registry, the windream VFS- service must be closed and started again.

Restrictions of the windream client computers The following restrictions are valid for the connected clients: windream Client Installation 25

1. Indices of deleted, renamed or moved files can "land" (meaning they can be transferred) on new files during Explorer operations. 2. No index events will be created for the files mentioned under 1., meaning that the client service will display no index dialog.

Explanation windream clients which address the share without local driver can browse in the windream drive and create and change files. Changes which have been made via the Windows Explorer underlie the following restrictions:

On a standard client, so called "floating indices" will be created on deleting, renaming or moving operations of applications (except Explorer), which will "land" again when a document is created with the same name. In the same way, indices can also land on a second document, if the first one is renamed or deleted.

This will not happen after respective Explorer operations on a standard client.

In contrast to standard client installations, an installation with server share cannot detect which client process executes an action. Due to this fact, Explorer and other applications (e.g Microsoft Word) cannot be differentiated from each other. A consequence is that these indices will also land again on Explorer operations.

Further on, no index events will be created by the windream server for documents which have received floating indices, and no indexing dialog will be displayed.

A "landing" will only happen, if the same client session executes this action.

The "landing" of floating indices can be limited on the windream DMS-server by setting a timeout value in the Registry.

Under key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\A.I.S. GmbH\windream\3.6\Database there is an entry named TTSTimeout of type DWORD, via which you can set the timeout value:

• TTSTimeout value = 0: no timeout (default) • TTSTimeout value > 0: timeout in seconds.

Warning: The setting of a timeout >0 may result in a loss of index information when editing documents e.g. with MS Office applications. The applications save new files partly in temporary files, delete the original file (with index data) and rename the temporary file into the original name, and the indices "land" again. 26 windream Client Installation

If the timeoout value has been set lower than the time the office applications need between deleting the original file and the renaming process of the temporary file, the original indices will be lost.

Note: The restrictions mentioned can be avoided under Windows 2000 and XP. Thus, the filter driver named "Access to server share" will be installed on the windream clients (see chapter "Installing the windream client", p. 26).

Installing the windream client computer Now, you execute the windream client setup program on the workstations. The setup program has been described in chapter "Installing the windream client" (standard installation)", p. 13.

We will now describe those dialogs and settings which diverge from the standard installation.

Start the setup program in the extended mode to install the client without local VFS-driver (see also chapter "Client setup – Starting the installation ", p. 11).

In the windream components dialog box, you select the components to be installed. Further information concerning the respective components can be found in chapter "windream components (extended mode)", p. 8.

windream components Select the following components:

• DMS connectivity, • Shell- and find extensions and (if required) • server share access (not Windows 9x). windream Client Installation 27

Figure 5: windream components – client with access to server share

Server share access With the option named server share access (not Windows 9x) a filter driver can be installed (depending on the operating system) with which the restrictions described under "Restrictions for the windream clients", p. 24 can be avoided.

System requirements for the filter driver • Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 or • Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2.

Filter driver for server share access The filter driver transfers the required process information to the server share so that a differentiation between Explorer and the other applications is possible again.

Note: A switch from a standard client with local serverdrive drivers to a client with access to the server share incl. the filter driver is not possible via the setup program. For this, the client must be uninstalled and the computer must be rebooted. Then, the components mentioned must be selected for a new installation in the extended mode.

Restrictions After the installation of the filter driver "Access to server share", a device which can be started manually named windream VFS Filter driver is displayed in the device manager. (The viewing 28 windream Client Installation

type must include hidden devices. The driver can be found under entry Non-PnP-driver and is named "windream VFS Filter driver").

After having executed the windream client setup, the driver is set to being started on demand (tab page Driver from the driver Properties), because

• on the one hand, performance limitations (5-10 %) in file system operations are to be expected, as – for transferring the process information – additional system calls are executed and network traffic is created. • On the other hand, enabling the automatic start type may lead to problems like a system crash. Due to this reason, we do not recommend to change the settings. Instead, a manual start of the driver can be entered in the local Registry.

Under key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Run] the following entry can be created:

WindreamLMFilter=net start LMFilter

In order to enable the driver to be started, the logged-on user must be a member of the Windows NT group named Mainusers. Otherwise, access will be denied.

If the driver shall also be started for users who are not members of the group of mainusers, a respective process can be defined in the task manager. Thus, log in under the local administrator ID first. Then, create a scheduled task in the task manager, which executes the "net start LMFilter" command under the local administrator account during the logon process (tab page Schedule of the task properties, execute task on logon).

Closing the setup program and mapping the network drive After having completed the setup program, a reboot might become necessary for refreshing and completing the configuration. Thus, the setup program will be launched once again after the reboot (in standard mode) to update the Registry and to connect the share (see chapter "Client setup – installation modes", p. 8).

Start windream Control Center now Enable this option, if the Control Center shall be started automatically after having completed the setup procedure. You can also start the windream Control Center manually from the Start menu any time you windream Client Installation 29

want (e.g. via command Start>Programs>windream>windream Control Center).

Figure 6: Starting the windream Control Center

Reboot A respective message will be displayed, if the setup program cannot be started automatically again. In this case, start the windream setup program once again manually (see also chapter "Client setup – Starting the installation", p. 11).

Note: When rebooting your computer, you will have to log on to the system under the same user account under which you have also executed the installation of the windream client.

After having registered the windream services, a logon can be executed under the ID of a windream user (not administrator). This user must also connect the share with a drive letter.

Connecting the windream drive After having installed windream successfully, you will still have to map the share (the server drive, e.g. \\Myserver\windream) with a free drive letter on the client. 30 windream Client Installation

Figure 7: Mapping the windream drive

You will be able to map the drive automatically after having completed the setup and after the reboot or to map the drive manually later (see also "Connecting the windream drive with a drive letter", p. 10 and "Connecting the windream drive", p. 10). windream Client Installation 31

Client installation on terminal servers

In order to install windream on a terminal server, you install the windream client including the terminal server network drivers on a terminal server. The installation is executed via the client setup in the extended mode (see also chapter "Client setup – installation modes", p. 8.

The share (e.g. \\Windream\Objects) will then be mapped by the terminal server users on the terminal clients with a free drive letter (Map network drive).

The installation of the windream server is executed via the windream server setup on a separate computer (windream server).

System requirements The requirements which are valid for the installation of the windream client on the workstations are described under "windream client requirements".

System requirements for terminal server network driver • Windows 2000 Server SP4 Terminal Server, • Windows 2003 SP1 Terminal Server or • Citrix MetaFrame in installation mode.

Note: We urgently recommend not to install the windream server on the terminal server, but on a separate computer. Additionally, a separate server should exist as a Domain Controller which administers the user and group profiles.

Thus, you should select a system configuration like that presented in the following example: 32 windream Client Installation

Figure 8: Configuration of a windream installation in terminal server environments

In the following description, the terminal server will be named as TERMSRV_1 and the windream server as WMDMSSRV.

Installing the terminal server network driver Launch the setup program on the terminal server from the installation CD in the extended mode. See also chapter "Client setup – Starting the installation", p. 11.

Attention: Ensure that the terminal server operates in the installation mode. the setup program will switch to this mode by itself. If this should not work, you will have to change the mode before the installation via command change user /install from a command line of a DOS prompt. Via command change user /query you can request the current mode in advance.

Welcome After having started the setup program, the setup assistent will guide you through the installation steps.

Licence agreements with the installation, you confirm the licence agreements. windream Client Installation 33

windream Info Before continuing the installation, please check whether the system requirements are fulfilled.

windream components In this dialog box, you select the following components:

• DMS Connectivity, • Shell- and find extensions, • terminal server network drive.

Figure 9: windream components for the installation of the terminal server

Further information on the respective components can be found in chapter "windream components (extended mode)", p. 8.

windream system check The windream system check checks the system configurations and the installation requirements. If required additional components are missing or if the system settings are incorrect, a respective message will be displayed in the dialog box.

In this case, the setup program cannot be continued. Cancel the installation. If necessary, install the missing components and correct the systerm settings. The, start the setup program again. 34 windream Client Installation

Select destination path In this dialog box, you enter the destination folder for the installation of windream. Apply the suggested folder or choose another one via the Browse button.

Attention: If several terminal servers are used on which windream is installed, please urgently ensure that the same installation path is set on all servers.

VFS-service logon account Here, you enter the user-ID under which the windream VFS-service will operate on the terminal server. This user account must exist before executing the setup program. We recommend to use the ID of the windream mainuser.

Figure 10: Entering the ID of the windream mainuser during the installation of the terminal server

While executing the setup program, the windream mainuser must be determined, under whose ID the windream VFS-service will operate on the terminal server. This user account must already exist before executing the setup program.

If the windream DMS-server has been configured with a mainuser whose account has been created on a domain (e.g. MYDOMAIN\windream), this domain user must also be determined on the terminal server. windream Client Installation 35

If the windream DMS-server is configured with a mainuser account which has been created locally on the windream server (e.g. WMDMSSRV_1\windream), this user account must also be created locally on the terminal server (e.g. TERMSRV_1\windream). In this case, you enter the ID of this local user on the terminal server when executing the setup program.

The user determined (windream mainuser) will be added to the group of local administrators by the setup program, and the following system rights will be assigned:

System right SeBatchLogonRight Logon as batch processing job SeCreatePermanentPrivilege Creating permanently shared objects SeCreateTokenPrivilege Creating a token object SeLoadDriverPrivilege Loading and removing device drivers SeServiceLogonRight Logon as service SeTcbPrivilege Acting as part of the operating system Table 2: System rights of the windream mainuser on the terminal server

Note: After having completed the installation, please check in the local security rules of the system settings (e.g. via command Programs>Administration) whether the rights have been set respectively. If this is not true, you will have to assign the rights manually there.

Settings database server Here, you enter the name and the port of the server on which the windream DMS-service is installed. The fields are preset and generally you can apply the presettings. 36 windream Client Installation

Figure 11: server name of the windream server and port of the TCP-service in a terminal server installation

Select program folder In the Program folder field, you enter a name for the folder under which the windream icon will be displayed in the Start menu.

Timestamp A timestamp will be displayed in this dialog box. This timestamp is required for synchronisation in different terminal server installations. If several terminal servers are used on which windream shall be installed the same timestamp must be entered in the Registry on all servers.

Otherwise, user-defined settings will always be overwritten by default settings.

If the setup program is executed for the first time on the first terminal server, please copy the timestamp displayed so that you can use it for the following setups on further terminal servers. windream Client Installation 37

Figure 12: Timestamp during the terminal server installation

If this is already an installation on a further terminal server, please type the timestamp of the first installation into the input field.

You can check the timestamp in the Registry on the different terminal servers:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\A.I.S. GmbH\windream\3.6\setup

Under this key, the timestamp is entered as a character string with the following format:

Installed = YYYYMMDDHHMMSS

Note: This timestamp entry must be identical on all terminal servers before a user logs in there.

Installation summary In a summary, all settings will be displayed which you have made during the setup routine. You can change settings by clicking Back.

Confirm the current settings with Next. The program files will be copied to the destination directory.

windream setup complete The setup program informs you that the installation process has been completed with this dialog box. 38 windream Client Installation

Computer reboot By default, the setup program requires a reboot. After the reboot, you will have to log on with the same user account with which you have also executed the installation procedure of the windream terminal server driver.

Then, you start the setup program once again manually to execute the required registrations and configurations (see also chapter "Client setup – Starting the installation", p. 11). you can start the setup program in standard mode (see also chapter "Client setup – Installation modes", p. 8).

Note: When rebooting the computer, you will have to log on with the same user account which you also used for installing the windream client.

Terminal server must operate in installation mode Please ensure that the terminal server runs in the installation mode . If this is not true, respective messages will be displayed.

The setup program will be cancelled at this point. Change the mode via command change user /install from a command line of the MS DOS prompt. Then, start the setup again to execute the required registrations and configurations.

Starting the VFS-service After the installation, the VFS-service can be started after having confirmed a respective message, and the start type can be set to Automatic.

Figure 13: Starting the VFS-service and setting the start type

The setup procedure is complete now. The terminal server users will now connect to the share drive (windream drive) with a free drive letter at the associated terminal clients. After the network drive has been mapped, the terminal client users who are entered as windream users can work with windream. windream Client Installation 39

Connecting the windream drive After the second start of the setup program, you can find the share \\Windream\\Objects in the network neighborhood under Network neighborhood>Complete network >windream.

Log on as terminal client user on a connected client and map the windream drive (command Specials>Map network). See also "Connecting the windream drive", p. 10.

Figure 14: Mapping the windream drive – terminal client

You can now work with windream. Further information on the application can be found in the windream documentations.

Note: The share must not be mapped with a drive letter by an administrator who is logged in at the console locally. The mapping may exclusively be executed by real terminal client users, if required by a logon script.

After the installation After the installation, the number of threads to be started can be adjusted to the number of users who will access the drive (see also chapter "Determining the number of threads for access to the drive", p. 39).

Determining the number of threads for access to the drive By default, a number of threads which can be started as a maximum has been preset via a Registry entry . Generally, one thread for each 40 windream Client Installation

logged in user is used. If more users log on to the drive than have been determined in the MaxThreads entry, several users will have to share a thread, which may result in less performance. In order to avoid this, the number of threads to be started can be adjusted. The maximum value allowed is 256.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\vfsdrv\Devices\VfsccomDevice\1

MaxThreads=Dword:00000008

The number of threads set will be created automatically on the driver level as well as on the service level when the VFS-service is started. We recommend not to calculate more than two users per thread. If more users shall work with the drive, we recommend to configure a further server share.

After having changed the Registry entries, it is only required to close the windream VFS-service and to restart it.

Restrictions of the windream terminal clients A logon to the DMS-service is executed by the windream terminal server network driver, as soon as an operating system logon to the drive is executed. For this purpose, one windream user licence is needed for each user. As the operating system does not always send the required "Logoff" command when the terminal session is closed, this windream licence will still be in use. At present, this problem can only be solved by providing a respective number of windream user licences.

In addition to this, the restrictions described under "Restrictions of the windream clients", p. 24 should be considered, too:

1. Indices of deleted, renamed or moved files can "land" (meaning they can be transferred) on new files during Explorer operations. 2. No index events will be created for the files mentioned under 1., meaning that the client service will display no index dialog.

An installation of the filter driver "Server share access") is NOT possible (see also chapter "Server share access", p. 27). Index 41
