They are Illinois or Illini Indians, descendants of those who created the great mound civilizations in the central United States two thousand to three thousand years ago. The increased pressure from white settlers in the 1840’s and 1850’s in Kansas brought cooperation among the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Piankashaw and Wea Tribes to protect these holdings. By the Treaty of May 30, 1854, 10 Stat. 1082, the United States recognized the cooperation and consented to their formal union as the Confederated Peoria.

    NATIONAL MEDAL OF ARTS | NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK NATIVE AMERICAN CONNECTIONS AT JACOB’S PILLOW A summary of the intersections between the Pillow and Indigenous peoples and traditions of the Americas, compiled by Jacob’s Pillow Director of Preservation Norton Owen. According to the chapter titled “Indians in Becket” by Pillow neighbor Ruth I. Derby in A Bicentennial History of Becket, the Mohicans camped in Becket during the summer months, hunting moose, deer, and bear, as well as otter, raccoons, beaver, foxes, and other small fur-bearing animals. A later Becket history identified descendants of the Muckhaneek, Narragansett, and Pequot tribes. They collected and dried food for the winter and skins for clothing. They also made maple syrup and sugar and taught settlers to do this. They sold the land to settlers in 1736, though the plans weren’t accurate and Chief Konkapot was upset that traditional hunting grounds were inadvertently included in the property transfer. This discrepancy was later settled with an additional payment that covered all lands west of the Westfield River. There are reportedly Indian burial grounds off George Carter Road, near Jacob’s Pillow. 1933 – During its first summer of Pillow performances, the repertory of Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers includes the Osage-Pawnee Dance of Greeting and a Shawn solo, Invocation to the Thunderbird. 1934 – Ted Shawn revives his Hopi Indian Eagle Dance, originally part of his full-length 1923 production, Feather of the Dawn. A new group work, Ponca Indian Dance, is presented for the first time. 1936 – The first act of a full-evening work, O Libertad!, opens with a section titled Noche Triste de Moctezuma and also includes other sections about Native Americans of the Southwest.

In Oklahoma, thirty-eight federally recognized tribes represent about 8 percent of the population. Most of these tribes came from places around the country but were removed from their homelands to Oklahoma in the nineteenth century. Their diverse cultures and rich heritage make Oklahoma (which combines the Choctaw words “okla” and “huma,” or “territory of the red people”) a special state. American Indians have impacted Oklahoma’s growth from territory to statehood and have made it into the great state it is today.     Transitions: In Memoriam, Moscelyne Larkin Dance Magazine By Camille Hardy August 2012 Read full story here Moscelyne Larkin (1925–2012) Co-founder of the Tulsa Ballet with her late husband, Roman Jasinski, Edna Moscelyne Larkin died in April in Tulsa. Larkin was born in Miami, Oklahoma, to a Russian mother and a Shawnee-Peoria father. She was always proud of her mixed heritage. Though she began studying ballet with her mother, at 13 she traveled to New York City to work with an array of teachers, including Mikhail Mordkin. At 15, Larkin joined the corps of Colonel W. de Basil’s Original Ballet Russe, which toured South America during World War II. And she met principal dancer Jasinski, whom she married in 1943 in Buenos Aires. De Basil Russified her name to Moussia Larkina. Athough the Jasinskis went to Europe in 1947 with Original Ballet Russe, the pair soon returned to the United States, appearing with Sergei Denham’s Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. With her name re-Americanized, Larkin was popular in such roles as the Waltz in Fokine’s Les Sylphides and the Cowgirl in de Mille’s Rodeo. In an interview in 2006, Frederic Franklin, premier danseur and ballet master of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, said of Larkin, “What a sparkler! She was our soubrette.” Upon retirement from performing, Miss Larkin—as she was known to generations of students— and Jasinski taught ballet and formed a student company in 1956. The group was so warmly received that it developed into the current Tulsa Ballet, a lively professional troupe.

Maria was considered America's first major prima ballerina. She was the first Native American to hold the rank. Almost from birth, Maria was involved in dance, starting formal lessons at age three. When she was eight, her family relocated from her birth home of Fairfax, Oklahoma, to Los Angeles, California, to further her ballet and musical training, and provide future career opportunities for her and her younger sister, Marjorie. At age 17, she moved to New York City in search of a spot with a major ballet company and took the name Maria Tallchief. She spent the next five years with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where she met legendary choreographer George Balanchine. Their marriage in 1946 was later annulled, but they remained friends and continued working together as dancer and choreographer. When Balanchine co-founded what would become the New York City Ballet in 1946, Tallchief became the company's first prima ballerina in 1947, a position she held for 13 years. The combination of Balanchine's difficult choreography and Tallchief's passionate dancing revolutionized the ballet. Her 1949 role in The Firebird catapulted Tallchief to the top of the ballet world.

    FACULTY & STAFF KATHY CHAMBERLAIN - Founder/Director/Owner Recognized for her high caliber training standards, each year Ms. Chamberlain's students are accepted and awarded scholarships to nationally recognized dance academies and have been accepted to many prestigious institutions of higher education. A Texas native, Ms. Chamberlain began her training in Dallas at the Etgen-Atkinson School of Ballet, where she later began her teaching career. She received a Ford Foundation Scholarship to study at the School of American Ballet in New York before ultimately returning to Texas to teach. Since 1977, her focus has been to lovingly teach and work with young dancers whose dreams are based, like hers, on a love for the art and beauty of dance. Ms. Chamberlain has served as an adjunct faculty member at Southern Methodist University Meadows School of the Arts. She is actively involved in supporting the arts within North Texas. Altrusa International Inc. of Richardson, Texas recognized Ms. Chamberlain as one of the Outstanding Women of Today in Small Business for 2006 and she was a nominee of ArtCentre of Plano’s 2008 Love of Arts award. Ms. Chamberlain worked with HIT Entertainment, Inc. as a consultant for the Angelina Ballerina® animated television series which premiered on PBS in the fall of 2009. Ms. Chamberlain is the recipient of the ArtCentre of Plano’s 2010 Central Market’s Arts in Education Award. During the 2010 winter season, she was among a select group of twenty dance instructors who were invited to attend The School of American Ballet’s Teacher Conference in New York City.

    Oklahoma Women's Almanac 109 OKlAHOMA HAIL OF FAME he Oklahoma Hall of Fame recognizes current and former residents, T living or deceased, who have performed outstanding service to humanity, to the State of Oklahoma, and to the United States or an individual who is not a resident of Oklahoma but whose work has brought honor or distinction to the heritage of the state. The Oklahoma Hall of Fame was established in 1927 and the first class of inductees was honored in 1928. As ofNovember 2005, 138 women have been inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame representing nearly 23 per­ cent of the 604 total inductees. The largest number of women were inducted during the 1930s when 43 of the 148 (or 29 percent) of the inductees were women. With the exception of the 1970s when 23 percent of the inductees were women, the percentage of women by decade has been between 18-19 percent since the 1960s. Women have become a higher percentage of the work force and their professional contributions have increased, but their representation in the Oklahoma Hall of Fame does not reflect their growing influence in all aspects oflife.
