2007 FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT 1 Join us in celebrating our ANNIVERSARY In 1987, under the direction of Chancellor Dr. Bill Stewart and the leadership of Executive Director Dr. Jim Meinert, the State Center Community College Foundation was established. The mission has not changed in two decades: to encourage philanthropic gifts that directly enhance the access to and quality of community college education for the students and faculty of the district. Over the years the Foundation has provided a stepping stone out of poverty for many people who might never had sought a higher education. Providing consistent oversight is the Foundation Board of Directors, a notable group of some of the most outstanding community leaders present in the Central Valley. Today, the Foundation has $12.8 million in assets, strong leadership, and a track record of hundreds of successful students. 2 STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION Table of Chancellor’sContents Message _________________________ 4 President’s Message ___________________________ 5 Financial Statement __________________________ 6 Board of Directors ___________________________ 7 Student Success Story _________________________ 8 Renaissance Feast for Scholars __________________ 9 Powerful Facts and Figures _____________________ 9 OAB: A Legacy Renewed _____________________ 10 Friends of the Foundation ____________________11 Thank You to our Donors ____________________ 12 2007 FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT 3 Chancellor’s Message The Foundation has been making history…one student at a time…for over twenty years. Since its inception in 1987, the Foundation has grown to more than $12.8 million in assets. These funds are a direct result of the generosity our donors have shown over the years. As a supporter of the Foundation, you have demonstrated your commitment to providing educational opportu- nities for students that may not otherwise have the ability to attend. State Center Community College District is committed to opening its doors to all who are motivated to learn and enrich their lives. The Foundation is a critical part of making students’ dreams become realities. Together, we are creating new learning pathways and new opportunities for students. As you read this report, I challenge you to look for opportunities to become more involved in SCCCD. Through your gifts of time, treasure, or talent, you can be a part of making history….one student at a time. Dr. Thomas A. Crow Chancellor 4 STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION President’s Message Dear Friends of the Foundation, As president this past year of the Foundation, I refl ect back on the generosity of so many people who helped us raise funds for student scholarships, programs, and our fi rst-ever capital campaign. What a year! Restoring the Old Administration Building at Fresno City College is an endeavor that is consistent with honoring the role higher education has played in our community. So many of us have fond memories of either that beautiful building or the college we attended. Many of us credit that life experience with our choice of career or even our choice of spouse. At the time of this printing, we have succeeded the halfway point of our goal. We are confi dent of the imminent success of the campaign. The capital campaign has afforded the Foundation a surprising benefi t–a higher profi le in the community. The attention the Foundation has garnered as a result of the campaign has highlighted our primary mission of providing much needed scholarships for students. We are pleased to report to our friends that the number of scholarships is up and increasing every year. That is fortunate because the need to help students becomes more necessary with each passing year. Thank you for your continued support of honoring the past through your support of the OAB, and for your help in providing an optimistic future for many of our students through your membership as a Chancellor’s Circle Member, Heritage Society Member, or scholarship donor. We are proud of the work of the past 20 years, and look forward to a bright future enriching the lives of our students– one at a time. Sincerely, Gary Renner Foundation President 2007 FISCAL YEAR ANNUAL REPORT 5 of FINANCIAL POSITION For the Year Ended June 30, 2007 StatementASSETS 2007 CURRENT ASSETS: Cash $ 122,564 Receivables 14,346 Pledges receivable, net of allowance for uncollectable amounts 886,163 Short-term investments 401,973 TOTAL CURRENT ASSETS 1,425,046 Equipment, net of accumulated depreciation 5,456 Long-term Investments 11,381,154 TOTAL ASSETS $ 12,811,656 LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS CURRENT LIABILITIES: Accounts payable and accrued liabilities $ 22,614 Annuity agreement liabilities – short-term 9,956 TOTAL CURRENT LIABILITIES 32,570 Annuity Agreement Liabilities – Long Term 12,433 TOTAL LIABILITIES $ 45,003 NET ASSETS: Unrestricted $ 479,765 Temporarily restricted 6,913,110 Permanently restricted 5,373,778 TOTAL NET ASSETS 12,766,653 TOTAL LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS $ 12,811,656 6 STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION BOARD OF EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE HONORED BOARD DISTRICT TRUSTEES ADMINISTRATION Gary Renner, Foundation President Coke Hallowell DirectorsIsabel Barreras Dr. Ned Doffoney, President, Fresno City College Greg Baxter, Vice President Richard Johanson H. Having struggled with a reading disability in her high school years, student Shareea Cummins-Wright did not pursue college classes when she was 18. Instead, she married the father of her young sons and took a job to help out with the expenses of running their household. Her work experience was inconsistent, though, as she dedicated considerable time to providing care to her father-in-law who eventually lost his battle with cancer. Finding herself at age 25 the single mother of her young boys and realizing that her lack of education would always be a barrier in her ability to adequately care for them, she completed her GED and enrolled in college courses. This year juggling part-time work, a small apartment, and full-time enrollment at the Madera Center, Shareea was a recipient of the Madera Ki- wanis and Lions Club scholarships last semester. She is now earning college credits in her second semester, will complete an Associate in Science degree in Business Administration shortly, and plans to transfer to a local 4-year university next fall. “I love the Madera Center, and appreciate that I can attend a fl exible class schedule with very reasonable fees. I am very grateful to the donors of my scholarship. Their gift represents so much more than fi nancial help. It feels like a vote of confi dence, and in turn I feel inspired by their investment in me and my family’s future.” 8 STATE CENTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION Renaissance Feast fundraiser The Renaissance Feast for Scholars is the only special-event fundraiser hosted annually by the Foundation. Set in the stunning reference room of the historic Fresno City College Library, the Feast has emerged as one of the area’s most notable social events. Authentic Renaissance royalty and court performers entertain guests throughout an evening that includes professional actors and musicians, festive social interaction, gourmet food and an exciting auction. Because this is a unique experience for all those who attend, a prominent venue for interaction with business and community leaders, and proceeds of the event benefi t a worthy cause, the Renaissance Feast for Scholars sells out every year. Through ticket sales, sponsorships, and auction proceeds, funds are raised for student scholarships and general support of the mission of the Foundation. We sincerely appreciate the enthusiastic support of our business sponsors and scholarship donors. 2007 Sponsors KING’S COURT - $10,000 LORD’S TABLE - $1,500 Granville Homes, Inc.
