Interesting Story of An Interesting Man - Loses Focus When Hitchcock Shows UpBy Dirk DrudglerDavid Dodge seemed like the kind of man who lived his life well. He had a wandering spirit which kept him untethered from society and possessions so he could turn his passion for world travel into a lifestyle. He married a woman who was much like himself and together they determined that they were going to live in the paradise of the French Riviera among millionaires. Somehow they were going to survive on his income as a writer. They found a little rental place with a magnificent view and settled there following the budget minded upwardly mobile maxim of finding the worst house on the best street.

JOSKOW ’70 M.PHIL., ’72 PH.D. Grace Kelly. Cary Grant. A jewel theft at the finest hotel on the French Riviera. Hollywood films don’t come much more glamorous than Alfred Hitchcock’s TO CATCH A THIEF. Critics such as Bosley Crowther of the New York Times faulted the film for lacking the edge audiences had come to expect from Hitchcock; he wrote, “TO CATCH A THIEF does nothing but give out a good, excit- o. ing time. If you’ll settle for that at a movie, you should give it your custom right now.” And while it may not dabble in the darkness N S of the film that preceded it, REAR WINDOW, or the terror of Hitchcock’s next collaboration with Cary Grant, NORTH BY NORTH- 1 5 E A N WEST, it’s still a sumptuous, entertaining adventure, and a crucial part of the master’s filmography. The film also showcases the S O work of some of Hitchcock‘s most important collaborators: cinematographer Robert Burks (who worked with Hitchcock on 12 films), costume designer Edith Head (11 films), Cary Grant (4), screenwriter John Michael Hayes (4), and Grace Kelly (3). THE STORY: David Dodge was a successful author of mystery stories in the postwar era, and in December of 1951, as his next book, TO CATCH A THIEF, was on the verge of publication, Alfred Hitchcock purchased DIRECTED AND PRODUCED BY the film rights for $15,000.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Wits Institutional Repository on DSPACE “DIRECTOR OF AUDIENCES”: A STUDY OF ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S MANIPULATION OF HIS AUDIENCES. Rebecca Webber (97 00 33 7X) A dissertation approved for the degree of Master of Arts by the University of the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg, 2007 Abstract This Master’s thesis identifies and elucidates upon the motifs/themes/images, which Hitchcock utilized in his films to ultimately manipulate and thereby direct his audience’s perception and understanding of his films’ narratives. The devices that are described and investigated in detail in this thesis are found to be recurrent in most of Alfred Hitchcock’s films. That highlights the question: why are they recurrent? What purpose do they serve? I believe that the answer to these questions is that these devices were used by Hitchcock to serve the end of manipulating the audience. The efficacy of these devices as used by Alfred Hitchcock is elaborated on in each chapter that addresses each motif in turn. Each chapter which deals with one of the motifs Alfred Hitchcock used in his manipulation of his audience contains examples from films and investigates how the motifs are used within each film to manipulate audience comprehension. These examples are strengthened with theory from academics, theorists and critics who have made a life-long study of Hitchcock. My theoretical framework includes audience research and Metz’s theory of ‘suturing’ which addresses the meaning of camera position and the different point of view that the audience take up.
