Five StarsBy Opie32311Great short story, fast paced a compelling read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Story of An Interesting Man - Loses Focus When Hitchcock Shows UpBy Dirk DrudglerDavid Dodge seemed like the kind of man who lived his life well. He had a wandering spirit which kept him untethered from society and possessions so he could turn his passion for world travel into a lifestyle. He married a woman who was much like himself and together they determined that they were going to live in the paradise of the French Riviera among millionaires. Somehow they were going to survive on his income as a writer. They found a little rental place with a magnificent view and settled there following the budget minded upwardly mobile maxim of finding the worst house on the best street. It was here he wrote To Catch A Thief. It is the story of a cat burglar out to prove his innocence in the Cote d'Azure. Alfred Hitchcock bought the rights to the film and made the same French Riviera location the obvious choice for working with Cary Grant Grace Kelly. The very short book primarily focuses on David Dodge until the movie people show up. These moments are the most interesting as Mr. Dodge is an interesting person who we don't know much about. When production begins on the movie, Dodge falls into the background and the narrative starts to drag. All of the details of the making of this movie and the lives of its legendary cast have been explored in much more depth than what is offered here in a fairly pedestrian account of the film's production. Interactions between the book's most interesting character (Dodge) and Hollywood's royalty are non- existent which causes the narrative to suffer greatly.Kudos to the designer of the cover, a very cool and compelling image not often seen on Kindle Singles. The book definitely has its charms but could probably do with a good and thorough editing to tighten up the story and to refocus it on its main strength, travel writer and novelist David Dodge.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Interesting short historyBy Tungsten HippoThis is an interesting short history of the story behind the classic Cary Grant film "To Catch a Thief." It starts with background on the author of the book on which the movie was based, and this was the part of the book that I found the most interesting. Mr. Dodge led an interesting life! The book also covers the process of converting the story to a movie. Fans of "To Catch a Thief" will probably enjoy this behind the scenes look at the movie and its back story. Others might find the story of Mr. Dodge compelling, as well- he lived the sort of life that many of us say we want. Jewel thievery, car chases, and romance on the French Riviera. Alfred Hitchcock's Oscar-winning film To Catch a Thief brought together Hollywood's two most glamorous stars, Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, in the most glamorous place on Earth, the French Riviera. It is a tale of jewel thievery, intrigue, false identity, covert investigation, and, most of all, romance. Kelly and Grant strike sparks off each other to a backdrop of sophisticated living and glorious scenery. This iconic and much-loved film was based on a novel by the American thriller and travel writer David Dodge. He took his inspiration from real-life events in the South of France, when he was briefly suspected of being a daring cat burglar and lifting jewelery worth $250,000 from the palatial establishment next door to his small rented villa. Once the real thief was behind bars, Dodge wrote at breakneck speed. Alfred Hitchcock snapped up the film rights before publication, visualizing his two favorite stars in the lead roles. Hitchcock worked with his screenwriter, John Michael Hayes, to produce the film script that would take Hollywood's finest to the South of France. Mr Dodge, Mr Hitchcock, and the French Riviera tells the true story of the events behind the novel and the film To Catch a Thief. JOSKOW ’70 M.PHIL., ’72 PH.D. Grace Kelly. Cary Grant. A jewel theft at the finest hotel on the French Riviera. Hollywood films don’t come much more glamorous than Alfred Hitchcock’s TO CATCH A THIEF. Critics such as Bosley Crowther of the New York Times faulted the film for lacking the edge audiences had come to expect from Hitchcock; he wrote, “TO CATCH A THIEF does nothing but give out a good, excit- o. ing time. If you’ll settle for that at a movie, you should give it your custom right now.” And while it may not dabble in the darkness N S of the film that preceded it, REAR WINDOW, or the terror of Hitchcock’s next collaboration with Cary Grant, NORTH BY NORTH- 1 5 E A N WEST, it’s still a sumptuous, entertaining adventure, and a crucial part of the master’s filmography. The film also showcases the S O work of some of Hitchcock‘s most important collaborators: cinematographer Robert Burks (who worked with Hitchcock on 12 films), costume designer Edith Head (11 films), Cary Grant (4), screenwriter John Michael Hayes (4), and Grace Kelly (3). THE STORY: David Dodge was a successful author of mystery stories in the postwar era, and in December of 1951, as his next book, TO CATCH A THIEF, was on the verge of publication, Alfred Hitchcock purchased DIRECTED AND PRODUCED BY the film rights for $15,000.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Wits Institutional Repository on DSPACE “DIRECTOR OF AUDIENCES”: A STUDY OF ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S MANIPULATION OF HIS AUDIENCES. Rebecca Webber (97 00 33 7X) A dissertation approved for the degree of Master of Arts by the University of the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg, 2007 Abstract This Master’s thesis identifies and elucidates upon the motifs/themes/images, which Hitchcock utilized in his films to ultimately manipulate and thereby direct his audience’s perception and understanding of his films’ narratives. The devices that are described and investigated in detail in this thesis are found to be recurrent in most of Alfred Hitchcock’s films. That highlights the question: why are they recurrent? What purpose do they serve? I believe that the answer to these questions is that these devices were used by Hitchcock to serve the end of manipulating the audience. The efficacy of these devices as used by Alfred Hitchcock is elaborated on in each chapter that addresses each motif in turn. Each chapter which deals with one of the motifs Alfred Hitchcock used in his manipulation of his audience contains examples from films and investigates how the motifs are used within each film to manipulate audience comprehension. These examples are strengthened with theory from academics, theorists and critics who have made a life-long study of Hitchcock. My theoretical framework includes audience research and Metz’s theory of ‘suturing’ which addresses the meaning of camera position and the different point of view that the audience take up.
