EVERYONE KNOWS New Yorkers love their eggs Benedict, bagels and lox, and, of course, their Bloody Marys, which makes brunch unusually pop- ular here. Not until now, however, has there been statistical proof that New Yorkers are the country’s most brunch-adoring citizens and that their devotion is growing. According to research provided to Crain’s by Google, over the past 12 months, New Yorkers have made 35% more searches per capita for “brunch spots” than residents of any other metro area.Google also report- ed that the number of searches by MTV gets New Yorkers rose 10% in that period. EW YORK CITY FARED BETTER during the Great Recession than the U.S. as a whole. And the experience offers a window onto the city’s rapidly changing economy, challenging some long-held conventional wisdom. That manufacturing continued its decline will surprise no one, but who ROMAN MATATOV would have anticipated the city would rebound without the help of once- Forensic accountant, mighty Wall Street? Employment in core sectors of the local economy, Marcum like the securities industry, media, information technology and ACCOUNTING N +3,200 jobs government, have all stagnated, at best. What powered the local rebound? Education, health care, hospitality and retail. The city, late to the big-box game, played catch-up, boosting the retail sector. Tourists also gave retail a lift and helped fill restaurants and hotels, too, launching the hospitality sector to never-before-seen heights. Health care continued its rise, especially home health care, while higher education proved recession-resistant as usual. Freelancers are an ever-growing part of the city’s economic landscape. The local economy’s resilience has been the big story, but looking ahead, there are a few clouds. Salaries in many of the city’s growing industries don’t match the generous packages paid in finance or the middle-class paychecks attainable in the public sector or manufacturing. With a real possibility that the securities industry will be pared down for years, if not decades, the best hope for a lucrative future for the city may lie in higher education’s role. Can the ivory tower types innovate the city’s way to prosperity? —Text by Daniel Massey; photographs by Buck Ennis
