In early July we reviewed final recommendations from our consultancy and received news of Christina’s fellowship. Informed by both, we made the bold decision to suspend fall programming to enable board and staff to engage more deeply in the planning process – a strategic investment now of time and talent for the promise of a future filled with new possibility. By August, the Athenaeum became center stage - transforming from library to Hollywood set to construction site as members, tourists, artists, filmmakers, and contractors came and went. Suddenly, summer slipped by, students returned, a new semester began - the hustle and bustle of Benefit Street was back - fall had arrived. Inside the Athenaeum, leaves and crushed berries spot the carpets while the familiar scent of old books suggests you are home. Depending upon the day, Mary, Tina, Amy, Amanda, Kirsty, Kathleen, Stephanie or Morgan await your arrival, ready with the latest mystery, best seller, or biscuit (canines only)! Meanwhile, Mary Anne and Allen are upstairs ordering and cataloging the next batch of new books.

How we helped the oldest library in New York energize its brand while maintaining its distinguished character. © 2012 BERNHARDT FUDYMA DESIGN GROUP www.bfdg.com ConteXt GeorGe WashinGton read here In 1754, when there was no library in the city open to the public, the New York Society - a group of civic-minded individuals - formed a library in the belief that a subscription library which anyone could join,* and offering a broad range of books, “would be very useful as well as ornamental to the City.” It opened in a room in the old City Hall and for a century and a half, until the founding of the public library system, was known as ‘the city library.’ Broad Street looking north to Federal Hall. The Library was located on the 2nd floor in the west wing. During the Revolution, the Library’s books were looted by British soldiers occupying Manhattan. Some were torn up to make wadding for rifles and others were sold for rum. After the war a few books that had been stored at St. Paul’s Chapel in lower Manhattan were recovered, and others were found through advertisement. In 1785 when New York became the nation’s capital and Congress occupied the building (then renamed Federal Hall), the Library served as the first Library of Congress and was used by George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr among others. * Membership libraries began in the 18th century in America when societies or groups of individuals joined to purchase books for a commonly run library.

It was Salem, originally founded by Roger Conant as a Puritan fi shing community built c. 1665 by Eleazor Gedney, a prominent and wealthy Salem shipwright in 1626, rapidly became a thriving seaport of 1500 residents. Grayson: Sources of Hawthorne's "Sir William Pepperell" Sources of Hawthorne's "Sir William Pepperell" by ROBERT C. GRAYSON N THE FALL of 1832, Hawthorne's "Sir William Pepperell," a sketch I of the hero who led New England to the conquest of Louisburg on Cape Breton, was published in Samuel Goodrich's The Token (dated 1833). In this, the fourth of his sketches of famous historical figures ("Mrs. Hutchinson," "Dr. Bullivant," and "Sir William Phips" were published during 1830-31 in the Salem Gazette), Hawthorne used several sources whose facts he combined in a way that shows he had gained the skill of using another's data without quoting or plagiarizing years before he became editor of Goodrich's Magazine of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge (1836). Indeed, Goodrich's acquaintance with Hawthorne's skill in the Pepperrell sketch may be one reason he later offered Hawthorne the editorship. Featuring two panoranlic scenes-an expeditionary force preparing to sail from Boston Harbor, and its triumphal entry into Louisburg-"Sir Willianl Pepperell" characterizes four main figures and four minor ones. The minor characters are so vividly drawn that they seem bril­ liantly realized fictional creations; yet the bulk of the material-includ­ ing all these figures-came fronl historical sources, principally the History ofNew Hampshire by Jeremy Belknap, a founder of the Massa­ chusetts Historical Society.
