    Annual Report 2012 World Vision in Albania and Kosovo MOBILISING CHILDREN, YOUTH AND COMMUNITIES Welcome Letter from Rein Dekker National Director of World Vision in Albania and Kosovo As the new National Director for World Vision in Albania and Kosovo, it is my privilege to present to you our story of 2012. Before joining World Vision in October last year, I worked with another agency to support war-affected children in Su- dan and South Sudan. Until then, I was deeply involved with minority communities in Southern Africa around the ques- tions of land, identity, culture and poverty. Eight years ago I made several visits to Albania and vividly remember the openness and warmth of the people. I had been interested for some time to working with World Vision. Its significant field presence in a dozen areas in Albania and Kosovo now provides me with an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and young people in vulnerable communities. Looking back over 2012, I am grateful what World Vision, in collaboration with national and local partners, has been able to achieve. Some of the highlights of the past year were: • Launching the Child Protection and Participation Learning Hub which is a region-wide initiative that enables replication of field-based success for the improved well-being of children. Also next year will launch a new learning hub focused on Gender. • Young people prepared and presented a special report on child rights to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. • Joined the National Referral Mechanism for cooperation on anti-trafficking.

For example, one of the most common snake species in this area is the dice snake; nevertheless, previous studies have only reported its distribution. The aim of the present study was to analyze characteristics of the dice snake population along the Vrbanja River. Animals were processed during 2011 throughout their activity period. In total, 199 individuals of all ages were collected. We observed substantial differences in numbers of animals captured in different habitat types classified according to the level of anthropogenic influence. Unexpectedly, the largest number of snakes was captured in the zone with the highest anthropogenic influence, while the smallest number was observed in the zone with no anthropogenic pressures. The above is probably connected with the observed greater number of their most common prey, as well as the absence of raptors in areas with human impact.

Geographical names policy Albanian names are written in Roman script. Place names should be taken from official Albanian- language sources and all diacritical marks should be retained. Mapping can be found on Albania’s State Authority for Geospatial Information (ASIG) Geoportal. Nouns in Albanian may be in the definite or indefinite grammatical forms, which usually makes a minor difference to the end of the word. Large-scale maps produced during the late Communist era (1970s and 1980s) typically used the definite forms, but the practice in Albania now is to use the indefinite form, except in certain instances where the definite is required for grammatical reasons. PCGN advice is to follow this style, reflecting the forms as shown on current official Albanian cartographic products. Specifically, the indefinite form is used for all populated place names, short-form administrative division names and all physical feature names which do not include a generic term.
