Bonnie Henrickson

Kansas University

In her eighth season at the , head coach Bonnie Henrickson guided the Jayhawks to their best postseason run in 14 years. Making their sixth postseason appearance under Henrickson, Kansas finished the 2011-12 season with a 21-13 overall record and earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2000. After defeating Nebraska and Delaware in the first weekend, the Jayhawks advanced to their third Sweet 16 in program history and first since 1998. Despite falling to perennial power Tennessee in the re- gional semifinal, KU’s postseason run helped the team earn a spot in the final national rankings coming in at No. 25 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.

Henrickson helped develop two all-Americans in 2012 marking the first time in Kansas history the program has had multiple all-America selections in the same season. Additionally, three Kansas players were named All-Big 12 as Henrickson now has 20 all-conference honorees in her 15 seasons as a head coach.

Upon arriving at KU for the 2004-05 season, Henrickson earned the 2005 Carol Eckman Award- an award given by the WBCA which recognizes a coach who exemplifies spirit, integrity and character through sportsmanship, commitment to the student-athlete, honesty, ethical behavior, courage and dedication to purpose. The very next season, Henrickson’s second campaign was capped by a berth to the WNIT, KU’s first postseason appearance since 2000. In 2008-09, Kansas advanced all the way to the title game of the WNIT. Despite falling to South Florida in the championship contest, 16, 113 fans came out to support the Jayhawks in historic Allen Fieldhouse, a Big 12 single-game record.

Henrickson arrived at KU after establishing herself as one of the nation’s brightest young coaches at Vir- ginia Tech, where she was head coach for seven seasons and guided the Hokies to a record of 158-62 and seven postseason appearances. Under her leadership, Tech reached the NCAA tournament five times, the WNIT twice and won 20 or more games every season.

A Willmar, Minn., native, Henrickson graduated from St. Cloud State University in 1986. As a player, she helped SCSU win three Northern Sun Conference championships and advance to three NCAA Division II quarterfinals. She still ranks among the school leaders in points (4th - 1,731), rebounds (3rd - 995), free throws (1st - 507) and free throw percentage (4th - .790). She also was named to the all-conference team three times. KBCA College Men’s Coach of the Year– 2012

Tim Swartzendruber

McPherson College

Tim Swartzendruber is in his fourth year as the head men’s basketball coach at McPherson College. Swartzendruber, who currently owns an 88-41 overall record with the Bulldogs, has guided MC to three consecutive NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship tournaments, the first time a KCAC team has accomplished that feat. Entering the 2012 National Tournament, the Bulldogs had amassed 30 wins, the most in McPherson or KCAC men’s basketball history. The 2012 Bulldogs went 18-0 at home, and finished the season ranked fifth in the final NAIA-II poll. The team was 16-2 in conference play, giving McPherson its first KCAC regular season title since the 1944-45 season, 67 years ago. McPherson also won its first ever conference post-season tournament title and had five players receive All-KCAC honors. Coach Swartzendruber was named “2012 KCAC Coach of the Year.” The 2010-11 Bulldogs tied the previous men’s school record for wins with 21, while setting program bests in points scored (2,520), field goals made (882), free throws attempted (774, broken in 2011-12), rebounds (1,326, broken in 2011-12) and games played (35). Swartzendruber’s second season at McPherson (2009-10) rankd as one of the most successful seasons in men’s basketball history as he directed McPherson to a 20-9 record and a 13-5 mark in KCAC play. The Bulldogs finished second in the KCAC regular season and received the program’s first berth into the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Tournament, where they lost to Dakota Wesleyan in the opening round. In his first year, he directed the Bulldogs to a 14-14 record including a sixth place finish in the KCAC. The Bulldogs’ season ended when MC fell, 85-71, to the University of Saint Mary in the quarterfinals of the KCAC post-season tournament. Swartzendruber was named McPherson College’s men’s basketball head coach in April of 2008, follow- ing four years as head coach at Hesston College, a two-year, NJCAA Division II college. During his four years at Hesston, Swartzendruber’s teams compiled an overall record of 70-56. His 2008 Larks defeated Brown Mackie in Region VI Division II tournament play before losing to Johnson County Community College in the Region championship game to finish 23-9. The Larks placed two players on the 2008 All- Region VI-Division II first team. A 1977 graduate of Hesston High School, Swartzendruber completed his bachelor’s degree in education at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., in 1981, then went on to earn a master’s degree in sports ad- ministration from Wichita State University in 1994. Tim is the father of two children, son Tyler and daughter Taylor. KBCA Junior College Women’s Coach of the Year– 2012

Former Blue Dragon basketball great John Ontjes became the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball program’s sixth head coach on Aug. 9, 2007. In just his second season, Ontjes led the Lady Dragons to their first Region VI championship in 32 years. Two years later, HCC won its first Jayhawk West crown in 31 years. Then came 2011-12 … an undefeated Jayhawk West championship, a Region VI crown and the best finish in team history, finishing as the 2012 NJCAA national runner-up. Ontjes has been named the Jayhawk West Coach of the Year and the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year twice each (2009, 2012). Ontjes, now in his sixth season, has a 150-22 career record at Hutchinson. Ontjes reached 100 wins (119 games) faster than any previous HCC coach. He posted the second-most wins (40) in his first 50 games as HCC women’s coach. He was also the second fastest to 50 wins (62 games). Ontjes enters the 2012-13 season ranked third in HCC coaching victories – Tom Worthing has 231 and Rob Edmission has 199. Before Ontjes’ arrival before the 2007-08 season, HCC women’s basketball had never had an All-American. HCC now has six, including its first first-team NJCAA All-American in Jackie Patterson (2012). Patterson in 2011 and Laura Patrick in 2012 were named Jayhawk West Players of the Year. Patterson was a conference Freshman of the Year in 2011. HCC has posted its only three 30-win seasons under Ontjes, winning 31 in 2009, 30 in 2011 and a team-record 36 in the national runner- up season of 2012. In each of the past two seasons, Ontjes’ teams have also set team scoring records. Ontjes has made the Lady Dragon program a stepping stone to Division I. Ontjes has helped several players springboard to the next level. Ontjes has now has seven Division I signees and 17 overall four-year signees in his first five seasons. Ontjes took the 2011-12 Lady Dragons to new heights. After an undefeated non-conference season, HCC ran the table in the Jayhawk West for the third time, going 16-0 to win the league for the second-straight season. HCC defeated No. 20 Independence 43-41 in the Re- gion VI championship game and then defeated Meridian, No. 10 Walters State and No. 3 Central Arizona to earn a spot in its first national championship game, winning a team-record 36th-straight game. No. 1 Trinity Valley defeated HCC 69-55 in a battle of undefeated teams. HCC was ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA national poll for most of the season Ontjes earned his Associate of Arts degree from Hutchinson Community College in 1993 and his Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from the University of Oklahoma in 1996. He earned his Kansas Education certificate from Sterling College in 1999. Ontjes and his wife, Celeste, have two children: Max and McKenzie.

Ernest Schmidt

Winfield

Ernest Schmidt was born in Nashville, Ks. On February 12, 1911 and passed away on Septem- ber 6, 1986. He led Winfield, Ks. High School to three Kansas State High School Basketball Championships. The Winfield High School teams, coached by W. L. “Bill” Martin, won state championships in 1927(17-8), 1928(22-4) and 1929(22-1). In 1927 they defeated Lawrence High School 32-25 in the Championship game. In 1928 they defeated Topeka High School 18-14 and in 1929 they defeated Newton High School 10-8. An explosive 6’ 4” center, Ernest had the un- canny ability to score from angles. He towered over most players of the period and scored his points on tip-ins and a one hand shot that was ahead of its time.

He played for the Kansas Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University) in the early 1930’s under Coach John Lance and was considered one of the best college players of his era. He was an All-Conference performer all four years and led his team to four straight conference titles. He led the team to 47 straight victories, a feat unsurpassed until Bill Russell’s San Francisco University team won 60 straight more than 20 years later in 1955 and 1956 seasons He was nicknamed “Old Grand” for scoring exactly 1,00 points during his college career.

Schmidt went on to play AAU basketball, starring for the Reno Creameries and Denver Piggly Wiggly teams. Ernest Schmidt was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. as a player in 1974.
