Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World
1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp. -

IX. Surviving Free Jazz 1962-1974
IX. Surviving Free Jazz (1962-1974) And so it came to pass that, when jazz finally reached a level of complexity on a par with classical music, many people were unhappy—not only listeners in the audience, but record com- panies who couldn’t sell the stuff and musicians who either didn’t get it or didn’t want to play it if they did. It was just too bizarre to them, yet the jazz critics almost universally fell over them- selves promoting it and, by the mid-1960s, jazz as an art form was thriving (sort of) while jazz as a commercial music was all but dead. Theodor Adorno, teaching his elitist bile out in California, was probably ecstatic. Classical music, which had also entered a new and even more convoluted phrase of development as well, was similarly struggling to find audiences, but in this case the decision-making was relatively easy. The Boards of Directors of major symphonies and opera houses simply enforced a policy of allowing only a small number of contemporary works (and, in their judgment, “contemporary” went back to Schoenberg’s and Stravinsky’s work of the 1910s) per year on their programs. You either played the accepted standard repertoire, which they would now expand to include Gustav Mahler (who had formerly been verboten), or your contract would be nullified and a new music director would be hired. From this point on, I will unfortunately have to point out the weaknesses in the aesthetics of certain musicians in certain styles in order to elucidate the forward growth of the music. -
Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021)
Discography Updates (Updated May, 2021) I’ve been amassing corrections and additions since the August, 2012 publication of Pepper Adams’ Joy Road. Its 2013 paperback edition gave me a chance to overhaul the Index. For reasons I explain below, it’s vastly superior to the index in the hardcover version. But those are static changes, fixed in the manuscript. Discographers know that their databases are instantly obsolete upon publication. New commercial recordings continue to get released or reissued. Audience recordings are continually discovered. Errors are unmasked, and missing information slowly but surely gets supplanted by new data. That’s why discographies in book form are now a rarity. With the steady stream of updates that are needed to keep a discography current, the internet is the ideal medium. When Joy Road goes out of print, in fact, my entire book with updates will be posted right here. At that time, many of these changes will be combined with their corresponding entries. Until then, to give you the fullest sense of each session, please consult the original entry as well as information here. Please send any additions, corrections or comments to http://gc-pepperadamsblog.blogspot.com/, despite the content of the current blog post. Jan Johansson – En Sky Troldkarl
Download the Tenor Saxophone of Mikkel
1 The TENORSAX of MICHAEL FLAGSTAD “MIKKEL” Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Aug. 18, 2017 2 Born: Oslo, April 23, 1930 Died: Oslo, June 29, 2005 Introduction: Mikkel Flagstad was a highly respected tenor saxophonist in the Norwegian jazz community. It should be mentioned that he was the nephew of the famous opera singer Kirsten Flagstad. His possibilities for a great career were cut short by having to remove one lung. Personally I never heard him play, but I met him in trying to identify the tenorsax soli with the Kjell Karlsen orchestra, a very kind and pleasant man. History: With Tage Wilford's orkester ca. 1945, school band at Riis 1945-46 (cl, as), professional musician 1946-70, with Hans Backe, Kjell Johansen's orchestra in Åsgårdstrand and touring Sweden 1948. Touring with Per Asplin same autumn, several jobs with Karl Otto Hoff a.o., in Den Norske Swing Klubb's orchestra 1949. One of the first to play real bebop in Norway. Led own bebop band autumn 1949 but no recordings exist. Played with Egil Monn-Iversen's orchestra 1951. Played with Ragnar Robertsen's and Kjell Johansen's experimental band 1952 (heavily influenced by Lennie Tristano) but left for Sweden later that year to work for Simon Brehm. Illness brought MF back to Norway in 1954, but one year later he was active again, with "Norsk Jazzelite" and Kjell Johansen's Radioband in 1955. Worked with Alf Søgaard and Aage Kjelstrup at Restaurant Humlen 1955-57. Illness brought MF back to Norway in 1954, but one year later he was active again, with "Norsk Jazzelite" and Kjell Johansen's Radioband in 1955. -
