Uefa Champions League UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - 2019/20 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS Estádio José Alvalade - Lisbon Wednesday 19 August 2020 21.00CET (20.00 local time) Olympique Lyonnais Matchday 10 - Semi-finals FC Bayern München Last updated 17/08/2020 00:02CET UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OFFICIAL SPONSORS Head coach 2 Legend 3 1 Olympique Lyonnais - FC Bayern München Wednesday 19 August 2020 - 21.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon Head coach Rudi Garcia Date of birth: 20 February 1964 Nationality: French Playing career: LOSC Lille, Caen, Martigues Coaching career: Corbeil-Essonnes (player-coach), St-Étienne, Dijon, Le Mans, LOSC Lille, Roma, Marseille, Lyon • The son of former LOSC player José Garcia, Rudi grew up in the Paris suburbs but started his playing career as an attacking midfielder at his father's old club. Spent six years with Les Dogues, going on to Caen (1988-91) and Martigues (1991-92) before injury prompted a move into coaching. • Having completed a sports science degree, started out as a player-coach at amateur side Corbeil-Essonnes, whom he had represented as a youngster; did well enough to be offered a job as assistant coach at St-Étienne in 1998. After a brief spell as head coach in tandem with Jean-Guy Wallemme, Garcia re-emerged at the helm of Dijon in 2002, winning promotion to Ligue 2 in 2003/04 and taking the club to the French Cup semi-finals. Returned to Ligue 1 in 2007 with Le Mans, who he led to ninth place in his only season. • Brought to LOSC as Claude Puel's successor in 2008, he briefly left after a fifth-placed finish in his first season only to reconsider. He led his side to victory in the Coupe de France in May 2011, their first win in the competition since 1955, before completing a domestic double a week later, LOSC's first league title in 57 years. • Appointed at Roma in June 2013 and oversaw wins in his first ten league matches, the best ever start to Serie A. Eventually finished second, earning a UEFA Champions League place for the first time since 2010, and Roma again finished second in 2015, before Garcia was dismissed the following January. • Took over at Marseille in October 2016, taking the club to the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League final in Lyon, but Atlético Madrid proved too strong. Garcia left OM in May 2019 and, five months later, was appointed Lyon coach after Sylvinho's brief reign. Hans-Dieter Flick Date of birth: 24 February 1965 Nationality: German Playing career: Sandhausen, Bayern, Köln Coaching career: Bammental, Hoffenheim, Salzburg (assistant), Germany (assistant), Bayern (assistant, caretaker) • As a player, Flick's outstanding performances in the lower leagues earned him a Bayern contract at the age of 20. An industrious midfielder who was more valued as a team player rather than a goalscorer, he went on to make over 100 appearances in Munich before departing for Köln, where a series of injuries forced him to retire aged just 28. • Flick's first coaching assignment led him to Hoffenheim when they were still in the fourth division, leading them to promotion in 2000/01. He then had a short spell as Giovanni Trapattoni's assistant at Salzburg, until Joachim Löw asked him to be his right-hand man for Germany's national team in summer 2006. • His work for Die Mannschaft went well beyond the pitch, as Flick invested a considerable amount of time in setting up databases and technical information about players and their training development. This initiative led to a switch to the role of sporting director following the FIFA World Cup victory in 2014. • Departed that role in January 2017, returning to Hoffenheim as CEO, but only stayed for a few months. • At the beginning of 2019/20, Flick joined Niko Kovač's coaching team back at Bayern and, following the Croatian's departure on 3 November, took charge of the team initially on an interim basis. Having signed a three-year contract in April 2020, he led them to a Bundesliga/DFB-Pokal double at the end of the season. 2 Olympique Lyonnais - FC Bayern München Wednesday 19 August 2020 - 21.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon Legend ALL-TIME STATISTICS The all-time record of the competing clubs in UEFA club competition. MERIT report on Media Value in Football Season 2014/15 Summary - Main results Authors: Pedro García del Barrio Director Académico de MERIT social value Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) Bruno Montoro Ferreiro Analista de MERIT social value Asier López de Foronda López Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) With the collaboration of: Josep Maria Espina Serra (UIC Barcelona) Arnau Raventós Gascón (UIC Barcelona) Ignacio Fernández Ponsin (UIC Barcelona) www.meritsocialvalue.com 2 Presentation MERIT (Methodology for the Evaluation and Rating of Intangible Talent) is part of an academic project with vast applications in the field of business and company management. This methodology has proved to be useful in measuring the economic value of intangible talent in professional sport and in other entertainment industries. In our estimations – and in the elaboration of the rankings – two elements are taken into consideration: popularity (degree of interest aroused between the fans and the general public) and media value (the level of attention that the mass media pays). The calculations may be made at specific points in time during a season, or accumulating the news generated during a particular period: weeks, months, years, etc. Additionally, the homogeneity amongst the measurements allows for a comparison of the media value status of individuals, teams, institutions, etc. Together with the measurements and rankings, our database allows us to conduct analyses on a wide variety of economic and business problems: estimates of the market value (or “fair value”) of players’ transfer fees; calculation of the brand value of individuals, teams and leagues; valuation of the economic return from alliances between sponsors; image rights contracts of athletes and teams; and a great deal more.

  • Ligue 1 Guide 2021/22
2021/2022 Ligue 1 Preview Guide INTRODUCTION After a historically close title race that saw four teams in the running Ligue 1 is back with no small amount of fanfare following a busy summer. Of those four sides, while Lille and Lyon have been relatively quiet as they try to consolidate under new managers, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain have been eager participants in the mercato, buying well in a way that addresses the two sides’ needs. Nice and Rennes have also done some canny business in the offseason, to say nothing of Marseille’s flood of arrivals, but the discussions about pro- spective title favorites in France have to start and end with the capital side. Even as rumors swirl around the potential departure of Kylian Mbappé, it’s hard to argue that Paris Saint-Ger- main haven’t done their utmost to convince their young star to stay. At least, that is, if one judges by their transfer activity. The arrivals of Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Achraf Hakimi have bolstered Mauricio Pochettino’s side in key areas whilst also adding another layer of dynamism. If he can keep his squad happy and balanced, this team looks as potent as any in Europe, Elsewhere, Monaco are probably best-equipped to challenge, even as they will have to contend with playing European football. The arrivals of Myron Boadu, Alexander Nübel and Ismail Jakobs look to be upgrades, and so long as Niko Kovac’s exciting, front-foot football remains in place and so do all of its key elements.

  • Flow Motifs in Soccer: What Can Passing Behavior Tell Us?
Journal of Sports Analytics 5 (2019) 299–311 299 DOI 10.3233/JSA-190290 IOS Press Flow motifs in soccer: What can passing behavior tell us? Joris Bekkers and Shaunak Dabadghao∗ Department of Industrial Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands Abstract. Passing is an important and crucial aspect of winning a soccer match. It plays a big role in important decisions made by managers and owners when buying/selling players, picking offensive/defensive strategies and defining a style of play. In this article we show how to support these decisions by analyzing the unique passing behaviors (motifs) of players and teams from the patterns in their passing-possession data. We analyze individual players as well as teams based on the diversity and frequency of their involvement in different motifs. We gather passing and possession data from 4 seasons (2012–15) of 6 big European leagues with 8219 matches, 3532 unique players and 155 unique teams and apply the network motif concept to study the patterns. By introducing an expected goals model we build on the motif concept to measure the effectiveness of styles of play. We also make use of a novel way to represent the motif data (the radar graph) to make comparisons between players and teams across multiple seasons. We show how this analysis can support scouting for players and managers, identifying unique players/teams, finding relationships between position and style and in finding a suitable replacement for La Computadora. 1. Introduction these websites. This opens doors to extract a lot of hidden information on player and team behaviour by In today’s world we see an increasing trend in the devising new metrics and studying the data using availability of data.
