Media Value in Football Season 2014/15
MERIT report on Media Value in Football Season 2014/15 Summary - Main results Authors: Pedro García del Barrio Director Académico de MERIT social value Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) Bruno Montoro Ferreiro Analista de MERIT social value Asier López de Foronda López Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) With the collaboration of: Josep Maria Espina Serra (UIC Barcelona) Arnau Raventós Gascón (UIC Barcelona) Ignacio Fernández Ponsin (UIC Barcelona) www.meritsocialvalue.com 2 Presentation MERIT (Methodology for the Evaluation and Rating of Intangible Talent) is part of an academic project with vast applications in the field of business and company management. This methodology has proved to be useful in measuring the economic value of intangible talent in professional sport and in other entertainment industries. In our estimations – and in the elaboration of the rankings – two elements are taken into consideration: popularity (degree of interest aroused between the fans and the general public) and media value (the level of attention that the mass media pays). The calculations may be made at specific points in time during a season, or accumulating the news generated during a particular period: weeks, months, years, etc. Additionally, the homogeneity amongst the measurements allows for a comparison of the media value status of individuals, teams, institutions, etc. Together with the measurements and rankings, our database allows us to conduct analyses on a wide variety of economic and business problems: estimates of the market value (or “fair value”) of players’ transfer fees; calculation of the brand value of individuals, teams and leagues; valuation of the economic return from alliances between sponsors; image rights contracts of athletes and teams; and a great deal more. -

Comerica Bank Challenger 2010 “Behindthe Sceneswith Star Stringing”
COMERICA BANK CHALLENGER 2010 “BEHINDTHE SCENESWITH STAR STRINGING” Article by Leslie López bought the Seascape Club, and established the Aptos f you want to understand tennis better, want an inside view of Challenger, now the longest-running Challenger event in the Ithe Aptos Comerica Bank Challenger Tournament at the country. And Mindell has been stringing here every year since Seascape Sports Club, and like to laugh, pay a visit to the 1994, after Rick Kepler, USTPA player and Seascape Club’s stringing room, and have a word with David Mindell. He and Tennis Director, “stuck his nose in the stringing trailer down in his colleague Doug Denton, both of Star Stringing, based in Palm Springs, work to keep both tournament competitors and club members in top form throughout the week they are here. But like the players, they are full-time pros, and this week is one among many for them: they work the tournament circuit, taking care of the stars’ racquets, and everyone else’s in between. Mindell takes his work seriously, and is never at a loss for words about it. “This is truly a gladiatorial sport,” he says, “and we are the ones who get the chance to fine-tune the instruments of that sport so people can do better when they’re out there.” References to combat aside (or perhaps in full view of how tense professional tennis can be) Mindell also works at keeping people happy. While his hands move steadily through the racquets each day—a total of about 200-300 during an average Aptos Challenger, including about 70-80 from an expanding local clientele of Seascape Club members—he keeps up a running dialogue with anyone who wanders into his shop. -

Flow Motifs in Soccer: What Can Passing Behavior Tell Us?
Journal of Sports Analytics 5 (2019) 299–311 299 DOI 10.3233/JSA-190290 IOS Press Flow motifs in soccer: What can passing behavior tell us? Joris Bekkers and Shaunak Dabadghao∗ Department of Industrial Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands Abstract. Passing is an important and crucial aspect of winning a soccer match. It plays a big role in important decisions made by managers and owners when buying/selling players, picking offensive/defensive strategies and defining a style of play. In this article we show how to support these decisions by analyzing the unique passing behaviors (motifs) of players and teams from the patterns in their passing-possession data. We analyze individual players as well as teams based on the diversity and frequency of their involvement in different motifs. We gather passing and possession data from 4 seasons (2012–15) of 6 big European leagues with 8219 matches, 3532 unique players and 155 unique teams and apply the network motif concept to study the patterns. By introducing an expected goals model we build on the motif concept to measure the effectiveness of styles of play. We also make use of a novel way to represent the motif data (the radar graph) to make comparisons between players and teams across multiple seasons. We show how this analysis can support scouting for players and managers, identifying unique players/teams, finding relationships between position and style and in finding a suitable replacement for La Computadora. 1. Introduction these websites. This opens doors to extract a lot of hidden information on player and team behaviour by In today’s world we see an increasing trend in the devising new metrics and studying the data using availability of data. -

Spent six years with Les Dogues, going on to Caen (1988-91) and Martigues (1991-92) before injury prompted a move into coaching. • Having completed a sports science degree, started out as a player-coach at amateur side Corbeil-Essonnes, whom he had represented as a youngster; did well enough to be offered a job as assistant coach at St-Étienne in 1998.
