Very few sources written in the 9th to 13th centuries in Rus survive today. The Primary Chronicle is the most widely known and available account of the history of Rus for historians to use. However, scholars utilize the chronicle with caution because the original oldest surviving chronicle was written almost two centuries after the first dated entry. We can expect that not everything written in the chronicles was accurate and that changes would have been made.

    The Origins of the Slavic Nations The latest developments in the countries of eastern Europe, including the rise of authoritarian tendencies in Russia and Belarus, as well as the victory of the democratic “Orange Revolution” in Ukraine, pose impor- tant questions about the origins of the East Slavic nations and the essen- tial similarities or differences between their cultures. This book traces the origins of the modern Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian nations by focusing on premodern forms of group identity among the Eastern Slavs. It also challenges attempts to “nationalize” the Rus past on behalf of existing national projects, laying the groundwork for a new understan- ding of the premodern history of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. After the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula (The Autonomous Republic of Crimea), the President of the Russian Federation - V. Putin declared: «We are one nation. Kiev is the mother of Rus' cities.» Thus the archaic quotation became a political slogan. The history of each state has many secrets. Sadly, politicians at all times tried to "rewrite" the history to their advantage. But historical myths are not mere history misinterpretation. The distorted history becomes the basis for confrontation between states and peoples and leads to armed conflicts.

Saint Nestor the Chronicler, of the Kiev Caves, Near Caves was born at Kiev in 1050. He came to St Theo- dosius (May 3) as a young man, and became a novice. St Nestor took monastic tonsure under the successor to St Theodosius, the igumen Stephen, and under him was ordained a hierodeacon. Concerning his lofty spiritual life it says that, with a number of other monastic Fathers he participated in the casting out of a devil from Nikita the Hermit (January 31), who had become fascinated by the He- brew wisdom of the Old Testament. St Nestor deeply appreciated true knowledge, along with humility and penitence. “Great is the benefit of book learning,” he said, “for books point out and teach us the way to repentance, since from the words of books we discover wisdom and temperance. This is the stream, water- ing the universe, from which springs wisdom. In books is a boundless depth, by them we are comforted in sorrows, and they are a bridle for moderation. If you enter diligently into the books of wisdom, then you shall discover great benefit for your soul. Therefore, the one who reads books converses with God or the saints.” In the monastery St Nestor had the obedience of being the chronicler. In the 1080s he wrote the “Ac- count about the Life and Martyrdom of the Blessed Passion Bearers Boris and Gleb” in connection with the transfer of the relics of the saints to Vyshgorod in the year 1072 (May 2).
