OFFICIAL MATCH DAY PROGRAMME SEASON 2020/21 DIGITAL EDITION

SPECIAL EDITION DEDICATED TO FAW FAIR PLAY DAY Flint Town United endorses the FAW Respect Campaign

PLEASE SHOW RESPECT TO ALL OFFICIALS, STAFF & PLAYERS WELCOME TO THE A warm welcome to the players and officials of Aberystwyth Town, for their second visit of the season ESSITY STADIUM to the Essity Stadium. The first occasion was our last game before the most recent lockdown kicked in, and it was also the live game on Sgorio. We came out 3-0 winners, so a similar result to that would be much appreciated, especially given the incentive for a win today is that we would be guaranteed to finish above the bottom two, which has been our objective all season, despite the fact that there is no relegation. Today is our final home game, and I’m sure I speak for all those involved in the running of the club, when I say we shall all be glad of the break, after what has been a very challenging and arduous season. In reality, of course, work continues to go on behind the scenes, but at least the pressure of preparing for match days is lifted, especially during these strange and difficult times of coping with the various Covid protocols on top of everything else. I took on the role of Covid Officer after the latest return to play, and can safely say it’s an unwanted but necessary task, and one that I hope will soon become redundant, fingers crossed. I have had to adopt the approach of what I like to think as a benevolent dictator in carrying out the role, although others may beg to differ !! If things keep heading in the right direction, then hopefully we shall soon look forward to welcoming spectators back for the next season, albeit in some sort of limited capacity to probably start off with. It would be great for some of our supporters to finally get to witness first hand the team participating in the . Our form since Phase 2 has been really encouraging and bodes well for next season, as manager Neil Gibson looks to continue to put his plans into action. Last weekend saw the annual FAW ‘Fair Play Day’ in partnership with Nationwide Building Society for the JD Cymru Premier and The Orchard Welsh Premier Women’s League clubs on Friday, 30th April 2021, Saturday, 1st May 2021 & Sunday 2nd May 2021. We dedicate today’s programme to the FAW Fair Play campaign, and the cover photograph shows the two captains exchanging Fair Play pennants ahead of last week’s game.

04.03.2021 TBC AWAY Bala Town FC 0-5 FROM THE CHAIRMAN A warm welcome to players and officials of Aberystwyth Town FC, for what is the penultimate game of this quite surreal season. Both clubs have had a mixed time of it overall since the season started although to be fair to ourselves we have come on strong more recently. The win on Tuesday was satisfying, although it is no exaggeration to say we could easily have been into double figures, the chances missed in the first half were frustrating, however it was very pleasing to see the number of chances we created. The shine of victory was tarnished by what looked like a muscular injury to Jake Hampson. This is a real shame as he has developed into a major asset in a short space of time. A victory today would make it certain that we will finish outside of the bottom two, which psychologically has been our target, especially when no relegation was announced. Tuesday’s win was proceeded by a convincing victory at home to Haverfordwest. The team is now showing some real steel and conviction and is now beginning to have the look of a team shaped by Neil Gibson: lots of press, energy, togetherness and basically difficult to play against. Sir Keir Starmer visited the ground this week (pictured below). Irrespective of any political affiliations, it would be difficult not to be impressed by his knowledge and interest in all aspects of football. He was keen to find out about Flint Town United and loved the stadium. So much so that he has promised me to attend a game when allowed. Maybe he can sit next to Jason Manford…!

Darryl Essity’s Oakenholt Mill is once again proud to be the main sponsor of Flint Town United

Essity is a leading global hygiene and health company which makes household brands including Cushelle, Velvet, Bodyform, TENA, Plenty, Tork, and more.

Essity and its employees at the Oakenholt mill wish the team and its supporters every success for the forthcoming season, on their return to the Cymru Premier League FROM THE MANAGER Today marks our final home fixture in our first season back in the Cymru Premier. We welcome the players, staff & committee of Aberystwyth to the Essity stadium for what is a finely poised fixture. We know that Aberystwyth will be very determined to overturn the result a few weeks back and I’ve certainly been impressed by their performances of late. So, we know we are in for a tough fixture and will need to be at our best to gain 3 points. The players are energised and in good spirits following our last two games. It’s always nice to win but the level of performance has also been very pleasing of late, and, on Tuesday whilst we recorded our biggest Cymru Premier league win, I’m sure any neutral who witnessed the game would agree that double figures would not have flattered us, on the number of chances we created. We have been very clear to the players that we want to finish the season on a high and victory today would confirm us finishing outside of the bottom two places, something that I think our performances recently have deserved. It’s been a strange season in many ways, with the Covid lockdowns giving it a stop/start nature, and then having to face a number of fixtures in a short space of time. I must say, from my perspective, that the players, coaching staff, volunteers and board members have all been fantastic in dealing with what has been thrown at them, since I came in. We look forward to a positive end to the season in our final two fixtures, which will then give us some momentum for the club to take into next season. That will come around before you know it and wouldn’t it be lovely to welcome fans back to watch the lads in the Cymru Premier. Gibbo

In today’s programme we are promoting the FAW’s Annual Fair Play Day and here we explore the aims of the campaign The FAW Fair Play Code is to inspire players, clubs and supporters to take an active role in promoting this message for the benefit of football at every level in Wales, as we all have a collective responsibility for the image of the game.

The Code

Play Fair There is no value to victory if it has been achieved unfairly or dishonestly. Playing fair is more satisfying and rewarding. Even when a game is lost, playing fair earns respect while dishonesty only brings shame.

Play to Win, Accept Defeat with Dignity Winning is the object of any game. Never set out to lose but remember that nobody wins all the time and it is important to lose graciously. Do not seek excuses for defeat as reasons will always be self-evident. The winners should always be congratulated with good grace. No blame should be directed at the referee or anyone else and there should always be a determination to do better next time. Good losers always earn more respect than bad winners.

Observe the Laws of the Game The rules of football are simple and easy to learn. In learning the rules a greater understanding of the game will be gained. Through a better understanding of the game, players, clubs and supporters will have a greater respect for the referee’s decisions. It is equally important to understand the spirit of the rules. They are designed to make the game fun to play and fun to watch. By following the rules, the game will be more enjoyable for all.

Respect Opponents, Team-mates, Referees, Officials and Spectators Respect is part of the game and is fundamental to the FAW Fair Play Code. Without opponents there can be no game. Everyone has the same rights, including the right to be respected. In a team all members are equal. Referees are there to maintain discipline and Fair Play. Always accept their decisions without arguing and help them to enable all participants to have a more enjoyable game. Officials are also part of the game and must be respected accordingly. Spectators provide a game with atmosphere. They want to see the game played fairly but they too must behave fairly and with respect themselves.

Promote the Interests of Football Football is the world's greatest game. But it always needs everybody's help to maintain its greatness. Think of football's interests before your own. Think how your actions may affect the image of the game in Wales. Talk about the positive aspects of the game. Encourage other people to watch and play fairly. Help others to have as much fun from football as you do. Be an ambassador for the game in Wales.

Honour Those Who Defend Football's Good Reputation The good name of football has survived because the vast majority of people who love the game are honest and fair. Sometimes somebody does something exceptional that deserves the recognition of the FAW. They should be honoured and their fine example publicised. This encourages others to act in the same way. Between the FAW and yourselves we can help to promote football's image by publicising its good deeds.

Reject Negative Outside Interests Football's popularity sometimes makes it vulnerable to negative outside interests. Drugs have no place in football, in any other sport or in society as a whole. Say no to drugs. Help to kick racism and bigotry out of football. Treat everyone involved in the game with equal respect, regardless of their religion, race, sex or national origin. Show zero tolerance for gambling on games in which you participate. It negatively affects your ability to perform and creates the appearance of a conflict of interests. Show that football does not want violence, even from your own fans. Football is sport, and sport should be played peacefully in a safe environment. MATCH FLINT TOWN UNITED 2 HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY 0 REVIEW JD CYMRU PREMIER, 1st MAY 2021 SILKMEN SEE OFF BLUEBIRDS

Flint claimed their first win in four games, as they comfortably saw off the challenge of Haverfordwest. The Silkmen started brightly, as a corner was met by an unmarked Alex Jones but he failed to connect properly with his header. 15 minutes in, and the next big chance also fell Flint’s way. Sam Hart found Callum Bratley with a neat ball down the left and he dribbled into the area and tested Bluebirds keeper Wojceich Gadja at the near post. The visitors, though, remained resolute, and created their first dangerous moment after 35 minutes in. Some sloppy play in the defensive third, allowed Jack Wilson to cut in from the left and fire a shot on goal from the edge of the area, which struck the outside of the post. That let off proved crucial for the home side, as moments later, Flint took the lead. The Silkmen played out from the back and made ground up the pitch, before a finely weighted ball from Ben Nash was met by Josh Amis to head into an empty net after the keeper had been beaten by the big forward in the air. In added time at the end of the first half, Flint had the chance to make it 2-0. A Sam Hart delivery from a corner was turned goalwards by Ben Nash and kept out twice before the ball fell to Evan Gumbs, but the central defender could only fire over from close range. Flint began the second half where they left off, and this time successfully managed to double their lead just three minutes in. A terrific piece of skill from Hampson down the right, turned the visitors fullback inside out, before he was chopped down as he looked to accelerate away, earning his side a free kick. The youngster himself then stepped up to deliver an inch perfect cross from the set piece, which was guided superbly into the far corner of the net by Alex Jones with a well placed header.

Josh Amis threatenes the Haverfordwest goal With 20 minutes to go, the boys in black and white looked to press home their advantage and put the game to bed. A lively Hampson went on a mazy run from the half way line, successfully dodging challenges and when he broke into the box on the right hand side and unleashed a strike. Unfortunately, the ball was inches away from finding the far corner, and also just eluded the incoming Amis. The visitors did try to create a late consolation goal and won a few free kicks and corners, but the Flint defence were generally unruffled. Indeed, it was that man Hampson who almost had the final say, when he burst through the lines once more, skipped inside and let fly with a left footed shot that just crept the wrong side of the post from his point of view. The Championship conference consists of the top 6 teams and at the end of Phase 1 and the Play Off Conference, the bottom 6 sides. The team that finishes top of the Play Off Conference will enter the play offs for a UEFA Europa League qualifying place with those finishing 4th, 5th & 6th in the Championship conference. Phase 1 encounters …. ABERYSTWYTH

Aberystwyth Town 3 Flint Town United 1…. 18th September 2020 Our first away game of the season saw us make a long Friday night trip down to mid Wales. The first half was an evenly contested affair, with both sides looking dangerous on the attack. But in the second half, as Aber grew stronger, Flint noticeably wilted. The Seasiders started the game strongly, and created a series of chances in the opening 10 minutes. First, a dangerous cross whipped into the box by Mathew Jones had to be cleared behind for a corner by Ben Nash. Then Flint survived a penalty appeal on 6 minutes when Jamie Veale went over in the box, but the referee waved away the claims. Shortly after, Aber skipper Marc Williams shot from the edge of the box, but his shot was blocked. Having survived this early period of pressure, the Silkmen began to assert themselves on the game, and on 10 minutes carved out their first chance, when Callum Bratley produced an excellent cross across the face of the Aber goal, but it fell just behind Conor Harwood at the far post and he was unable to take advantage of the situation. From then on, it was an evenly matched affair for the remainder of the half. For Flint, Bratley was their most potent weapon, as he harried the Aber defence constantly unsettling them. On 20 minutes, Jon Evans sprinted clean through the Flint backline, and with just John Danby to beat, he blasted his effort high over the bar. Then, from a Wes Baynes corner, Alex Titchiner was presented with a free header, but his effort also cleared the bar. On the half hour mark, the home side had the ball in the net, when Mathew Jones drilled a 25 yard shot through a crowded box. However, his joy was short lived when a linesman signalled an offside decision, as one of the Aber players in the box was adjudged to have impeded Danby's line of vision whilst standing in an offside position. Flint made the most of this let off, and almost immediately went up the other end and scored. A long clearance from Danby was flicked on by Mark Cadwallader. Aber defender Harri Rowe, in attempting to deal with the aerial ball could only succeed in heading it into the path of Harwood. Aber keeper Connor Roberts came out to try and intercept, but the Flint forward shielded the ball from Roberts, then swivelled and fired home. Flint tried to press their advantage with a Richie Foulkes header from a free kick, but he could only direct it into the arms of Roberts. On 41 minutes, Williams' header crashed against the Flint bar, with Danby looking to have made a telling touch on the ball. But the respite was short lived, as Aber's equaliser soon arrived. Jon Evans received the ball on the right side of the area, cut across the face of goal and unleashed a curling shot into the top corner, to restore parity to the scores. From the start of the second half, Aber immediately piled on the pressure. First, Steffan Davies had a glorious opportunity that brought the best out of Danby, who spread himself well to deny the striker. Then Davies tumbled in the box under a challenge from Ben Nash, and this time the referee gave the spot kick, Mathew Jones stepping up to send Danby the wrong way. The momentum was now with the home side, and a miscontrol by Nash almost proved costly, as Jon Evans seized on it and ran through on goal. Fortunately, Danby was on hand to once again save his side. The Seasiders spurned another golden opportunity on 63 minutes, when their skipper shot wide from a great position with the Flint goal seemingly gaping. But just five minutes later the killer third goal did arrive. A free kick was initially cleared by the Flint defence, but the ball was played back in, and Lee Jenkins timed his run perfectly to meet it with a low volley which he steered past Danby to make sure of the win for his side. Flint Town United 3 Aberystwyth Town 0 …. 19th December 2020 Flint gained their revenge for their early season defeat in this return encounter, and new manager Neil Gibson celebrated his first win in his second game in charge, in front of the live Sgorio cameras. Two late goals, courtesy of substitute Rob Hughes, put the seal on the win, adding to Mark Cadwallader's well taken first half goal. The game was a bit slow to ignite, with both sides attempting to come to terms with a heavy pitch, and given the importance of the game, owing to their lowly league positions, neither wanted to fully commit to attack and expose themselves at the back. It was the visitors who carved out the first real chance on 16 minutes, as an inswinging corner was first cleared off the line, but only to Mathew Jones who was positioned just outside the box. His rising shot just cleared the Flint bar. Gradually Flint asserted themselves on the game, and by passing the ball around between midfield and defence, they were patiently building up play, and then looking to release their forward players. Just before the half hour mark, a Ben Nash header from a corner forced Connor Roberts into his first meaningful save, as he had to tip the effort over his bar. Flint had already seen a goal chalked off for a foul in the build up, when Cadwallader struck on 43 minutes. Nash had put in a robust, but fair, challenge to win the ball back for his side, before feeding Alex Jones. The Flint skipper looked up and played a defence splitting ball through to Cadwallader to run on to. Having gone in between the two central defenders, Caddy took the ball into the box, and with the outside of his boot, guided it past Roberts. Owain Jones had looked the most likely player for the Seasiders in the first half with his direct runs, and on 48 minutes he was left unattended on the far past and was found with a delivery which put him in a great position to score. As he controlled the ball, he cut inside but his effort was blocked for a corner. Then, Mathew Jones tried his luck from fully 30 yards out on the right, but his shot just failed to find the target. On 53 minutes, Jones broke down the right for Flint. Tom Kemp went on the overlap, creating a perfect dummy run and drawing the attention of a defender, allowing Jones to run infield and play a square ball into the path of the oncoming Wes Baynes, who took it in his stride and lashed a shot just wide of the Aber goal. Rob Hughes was introduced inti the action on 70 minutes, and was to have a big impact on the remainder of the game. His first contribution, just after coming on was to hit a 20 yarder that went just wide of the post. Then, on 85 minutes, as he attempted to get onto a loose ball, a rash challenge by Aber substitute Richard Ricketts, just inside the box sent him sprawling to earn Flint their first penalty of the season. Hughes got up to take the spot kick and drilled it straight down the middle. Some great interplay between Flint's forwards on 90 minutes produced the third goal for the Silkmen. Harwood found Hughes, who laid it back to Bratley, before he returned the ball, supplying Hughes as he moved into a more central position. His determination allowed him to weave his way past the Aber defenders, turning Jon Foligno inside out, before tucking a shot underneath Roberts and rounding off an impressive win for his side.

FLINT TOWN ARE UNITED AGAINST RACISM. TOGETHER LET’S KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL. MATCH CEFN DRUIDS 0 FLINT TOWN UNITED 6 JD CYMRU PREMIER, 4th MAY 2021 REVIEW SILKMEN HIT DRUIDS FOR SIX

Despite missing a host of chances, Flint still managed to run in six goals, to make it an eleven goal haul against Cefn for their Phase 2 meetings. Flint started the brightest putting pressure on the Druids’ back line with a succession of corners. Six minutes in, Eddie Clarke found Josh Amis with a cross but the big number 9 couldn’t convert. From the resulting goal kick, the home side looked to play their way out but reached no further than the edge of their own box, before Amis won the ball from their defender and gave it to Conor Harwood. The forward could have shot himself, but showed composure to slip it back to Amis who stroked the ball into the net. The fast start set the tone for the rest of the half and chances were created effortlessly for the visitors, but, alarmingly, none were put away. First Jake Hampson had an effort after 20 minutes which flashed wide of the far post. Next up was Amis. The goal scorer had efforts with a header which just sailed wide, a 1v1 situation which the keeper smothered and then some neat footwork to take the ball around the keeper which he then ran out of room to force an effort on target. Harwood also had a couple of decent chances, but was unable to convert. An inswinging corner also nearly paid dividends, as a Druids defender was forced to head onto his own bar under pressure, with the ball falling into the path of Evan Gumbs, who saw his drive cleared off the line. As the first half ended, the away side went in with just a slender 1-0 lead, but the game should really have been done and dusted by that point. The second half got off to a similar manner and it looked like the same pattern of play was happening all over again, with chances being created and missed. This time Alex Jones was the guilty party, firing straight at Druids keeper Mike Jones, following good work from Harwood down the right hand side. The frustrations were finally eased on 52 minute, when Amis put a chance away. The striker was slipped in by Bratley, who had brilliantly dribbled his way into a dangerous position in the box, and his low composed finish across the keeper made it 2-0 as the pressure paid off. In the build up to this goal, Druids midfielder Alex Darlington tried to scythe Bratley down in the middle of the pitch, as he began his run. The referee played a good advantage, and allowed Bratley to carry on, resulting in the goal. But in the immediate aftermath, Darlington and Richie Foulkes squared up to each other, and the Druids man received two yellow cards in quick succession, first for his original lunge, and then for his altercation with Foulkes, which led to him being dismissed. For his part, the Flint skipper was also booked. Not long after the second, Flint had their third. Amis won a free kick centrally about 25 yards out after being brought down. Up stepped Ben Maher to fire a wonderful strike over the wall and beyond a helpless Jones in the Druids goal. On 67 minutes, Amis sealed his hat-trick. Clarke was put in down the left hand side and his sheer pace helped him get away from his man to the byline. When he pulled the ball back low along the ground to the penalty spot, a confident Amis fired high into the top corner with a first time effort. On the 70th minute mark, Druids were reduced to nine men when Smith was sent off for a second yellow card after hacking down Mark Cadwallader. The Silkmen showed no sign of letting up, and Cadwallader fired hard and low across the goal leading to Druids defender Jacob Wise turning the ball into his own net. Unfortunately for the home side it didn’t stop there. In added time, Sam Hart was up from the back to head home a Ben Maher centre to seal a memorable 6-0 away win, and record Flint's biggest win in the Cymru Premier since their return. Within the Youth Phase, our U12's & U14's hosted Wrexham Academy, whilst our U15's traveled to Wrexham. Our U16's traveled to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately our U13's, U16's & U19's did not feature due to opposition drop outs. Here’s a summary of some of the games by the individual coaches:

Oldham Athletic U11's vs Flint Town Academy U11's - Paul Beck An excellent performance from the U11's against a good Oldham side. After spending this weeks training working on creating in the final 3rd and using the wide players, the lads dominated possession and were constantly on the front foot using the width of the pitch and whipping crosses into the danger areas. Excellent team performance deserving everything they got from the game.

Flint Town Academy U12's vs Wrexham Academy U12's - Gary McConnell We come up against a very strong Wrexham team this weekend. Having started the game sharp keeping the ball really well, Wrexham grew into the game and started to show there class scoring some fantastic goals, our goalkeeper was yet again on form this week making some brilliant saves and doing really well in 1v1 situations. We pressed well at times and looked to apply what we have worked on in training.

Flint Town Academy U15's vs Wrexham Academy U15's - Steve Giblin We must give credit to the players today for remaining resolute throughout. We had to accept Wrexham would have most of the ball meaning we had to set up in a manner that allows us to manage the game. We'll see this more and more we progress towards senior football where matches become much more tactical and intense. Our opportunities were on the counter so to score a nice goal coming from how we set up was pleasing. Whilst maximum effort, desire, work rate and commitment are non negotiable's, it was good to see the players demonstrate this for the full 80 mins.

Bolton Wanderers U16's vs Flint Town Academy U16's - Neil Hughes Well that was an experience! We always want to come away and learn from these games. We got a lot from the game this evening. We ended up taking a big squad so everyone got at least a full half. You could see the level Bolton were at. Their movement was superb. It took us 10 mins to get to grips with them dropping between the lines and rotating. We needed to close the space between the lines. The rest of the half we were well organised and defended far better. Second half we started better and were well in the half. The lads dug back in and even had a couple of chances to score. Tough, but as always learning!
