DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF ISLAMIC STUDIES ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2003 ABSTRACT The present work seeks lo investigate and study critically the contribution of Shah Waliuliah Muhaddith Dihiawi to Hadith literature. Shah WaJiuilah bin Abdur Rahim ai-'Umarial-Dihlawi(lil4H,-1176H./i703-1762) was lived in the eighteenth century C.E., an age of down fall of Muslim power, political dissetllement, social degeneration and educational backward- ness and indigence. Shah Waliuliah Dihiawi was an unparalleled Islamic scholar, thinker and reformer in Indian sub-continent. He spent the whole of his life in the service of religion and education and worked for the interest of Muslim-society. His sole anxiety all the time had been to see the Muslims powerful, strong and ruling based upon the Islamic system. He tried all his best to restore the Muslims' power and reform the society and revive the pure religion and establish an accurate and complete Islamic educational system.' Shah Waiiuiiah completed his education under his father Shaikh Abdur Rahim (d.li31H./1718) and other scholars in India and served as the teacher in Rahimiyah Madrasah which was established by his father in Delhi for twelve years. During this long teaching period he studied deep and widely and taught the students different religious and rational subjects, so he got the opportunity to reflect over a variety of issues. -

Chapter 1 Author’s Biography Shaikh Abbas bin Muhammad Reza al Qummi was born in the year 1294 AH in Qum, Iran. His father Shaikh Muhammad Reza was a merchant and renowned as a pious & religious man. His mother Zainab was a virtuous lady too and had pledged to herself that at the time of feeding the newborn baby, she would not be without ablutions (Wuzu) and would feed the child in a state of cleanliness & purity. She practiced what she said and for two years she fed Abbas in the state of ablutions. Due to this Shaikh Abbas al Qummi would say, "The main reason for my success is due to my mother's blessings, because that respected lady, within possible limits, fed me in a state of cleanliness & purity". Shaikh Abbas progressed so rapidly in acquiring Religious education that he became famous in Qum. He was known as ‘Shaikh Abbas' and was described as a young religious person who had great Islamic knowledge. In other words, the local people of Qum knew that a young boy aged 20 was present in their city who was performing great acts, and apart from in- structive and worthy sermons, he was even compiling books. At the beginning of his 21st year, Shaikh Abbas's first book was published in Qum, and was not only a means of happiness for Shaikh and his neighbours, but he himself thanked Allah (s.w.t.) for this success and tried much harder and wrote many other books.[1] In Qum he gained maximum benefit from the Celebrated Scholar Ayatullah Mirza Muhammad Arbab al Qummi (d. -

System of Higher Education Under the Delhi Sultans
Pakistan Journal of Social Sciences (PJSS) Vol. 34, No. 1 (2014), pp. 121-129 System of Higher Education under the Delhi Sultans Anilla Mobasher, PhD Associate Professor Department of History Islamia College Cooper Road, Lahore. Email: [email protected] Abstract: The Education System under the Delhi Sultans set many lasting trends in Muslim education in India. It formed the backbone on which centuries of subsequent Muslim education would be based. It was this system of education that the Great Mughals directly inherited and altered. In this research article the higher level of Muslim education prevalent in the Delhi Sultanate is discussed and analysed. The subjects and standard books of the curriculum before Sultan Sikander Lodhi’s period and the additions made during his period are discussed. The drift of higher studies toward transmitted or rational sciences is highlighted and the reasons behind are also discussed. This paper concludes that nine subjects were taught at this level of Education. Along with main text books, local commentaries and glosses authored by prominent Indian scholars were also included in the curriculum. Transmitted Sciences were highly preferred though Rational Sciences received impetus from Sultan Sikander Lodhi’s period onward. The syllabus conformed to that of the rest of the Islamic world at that time. Overall the system was successful in producing many learned encyclopaedic personalities.
