St. Thomas More Feast Day: June 22 Canonized: 1935 Beatified: 1886 On June 22, the Catholic Church honors the life and martyrdom of St. Thomas More, the lawyer, author and statesman who lost his life opposing King Henry VIII's plan to subordinate the Church to the English monarchy. Thomas More was born in 1478, son of the lawyer and judge John More and his wife Agnes. He received a classical education from the age of six, and at age 13 became the protégé of Archbishop John Morton, who also served an important civic role as the Lord Chancellor. Although Thomas never joined the clergy, he would eventually come to assume the position of Lord Chancellor himself. He seriously considered joining either the Carthusian monastic order or the Franciscans, and followed a number of ascetic and spiritual practices throughout his life – such as fasting, corporal mortification, and a regular rule of prayer – as means of growing in holiness. In 1509, King Henry VIII had acceded to the throne. For years, the king showed fondness for Thomas, working to further his career as a public servant. He became a part of the king's inner circle, eventually overseeing the English court system as Lord Chancellor. More even authored a book published in Henry's name, defending Catholic doctrine against Martin Luther. But when the king decided to overrule the church belief for his own and demanded that More do the same More refused and was imprisoned.

  • Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Church of Saint Boniface January 24, 2021 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. (Mark 1 17-18) UN-QUIET WORD FOR TODAY Disciples are more than ‘good’ agents. Occasionally all of us could use a good PR agent. Life itself perhaps might be so much easier with such an agent. Agents in the world of public relations, in media terminology, in the world of sports, enter- tainment and politics make the ordinary look extraordinary. A good agent knows how to blend criti- cism and put one in the good public eye. A good agent keeps one’s name in the best public light. A good agent knows the right places to be, the right people to associate with, the right clothes to wear, maybe even I, as a priest, might be better if I had a good agent?? (Make me look good!) The message of this weekend’s readings is: those called to be disciples or prophets, those who want to proclaim the gospel, cannot be just ‘good agents’; they must be about something more. Discipleship is about practicing or being what you preach. Jonah, in the initial stages of his prophetic ministry, saw himself just as a mere agent of “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, God. He was a very reluctant prophet in par- and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” ticular to the City of Nineveh. Jonah was a (Jonah 3, 2) Jew and a nationalist.

  • The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
The Church of Saint Boniface June 6, 2021 The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ “This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many." (The Gospel) COMING HOME TO MASS A pastoral letter to the Diocese of Worcester My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, During this past year so much of our life has moved online, to a “virtual” reality, including Masses streamed from our churches. However, as much as technology has helped us to bridge somewhat the pandemic divide, virtual reality remains virtual and is not the same as being present at the celebration of Holy Mass in person. We only have to remember the longing we have felt to be present for a meal with family members or friends for anniversaries, weddings or birthdays. How much we yearned to see them face-to-face. It’s the same with Mass. As helpful as it has been to connect to our parishes virtually, it is nothing like gathering in person with our brothers and sisters at Sunday Mass. The celebration of the Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives as Roman Catholics. It is where Christ gives himself to us in his Body and Blood. Christ is present at every Mass, in his Word proclaimed, in a tangible way in his Body and Blood and in the person of his priest. He is present to feed us with Word and Sacrament, to embrace us with his love and to give us the grace we need to face the struggles of our daily lives.
