Carol Nord Carrie Neumayer, an experienced local art teacher, is Executive Director facilitating a new program called “GirlPress”, designed to engage girls in exploring depictions of females in the media. The work will address misconceptions and Development News stereotypes, promote creative participation in local media, and encourage girls in the group to find ways to make their own voices heard in our community. During the program, the girls will make their own “zines”, and help create a website to voice their opinions about women and girls in media. “GirlPress” sessions will be co-facilitated by Erin Fitzgerald from Beargrass Media Club, who will bring audio and video components to the project. This is a fabulous, empowering new opportunity for our female students! (Mark 1 17-18) UN-QUIET WORD FOR TODAY Disciples are more than ‘good’ agents. Occasionally all of us could use a good PR agent. Life itself perhaps might be so much easier with such an agent. Agents in the world of public relations, in media terminology, in the world of sports, enter- tainment and politics make the ordinary look extraordinary. A good agent knows how to blend criti- cism and put one in the good public eye. A good agent keeps one’s name in the best public light. A good agent knows the right places to be, the right people to associate with, the right clothes to wear, maybe even I, as a priest, might be better if I had a good agent?? (Make me look good!) The message of this weekend’s readings is: those called to be disciples or prophets, those who want to proclaim the gospel, cannot be just ‘good agents’; they must be about something more. (The Gospel) COMING HOME TO MASS A pastoral letter to the Diocese of Worcester My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, During this past year so much of our life has moved online, to a “virtual” reality, including Masses streamed from our churches. However, as much as technology has helped us to bridge somewhat the pandemic divide, virtual reality remains virtual and is not the same as being present at the celebration of Holy Mass in person. We only have to remember the longing we have felt to be present for a meal with family members or friends for anniversaries, weddings or birthdays. How much we yearned to see them face-to-face. It’s the same with Mass. As helpful as it has been to connect to our parishes virtually, it is nothing like gathering in person with our brothers and sisters at Sunday Mass. The celebration of the Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives as Roman Catholics. It is where Christ gives himself to us in his Body and Blood. Christ is present at every Mass, in his Word proclaimed, in a tangible way in his Body and Blood and in the person of his priest.
