Latin American architectural theory has not been successful in dealing with the complexity of Latin American cultures, and in engaging with the whole range of architectural practices that take place in the continent's cities and buildings. On the contrary, in most cases, architectural theories have been used as means to create hegemonic architectural narratives and systems of referentiality through which a sense of homogeneity could be reconstituted. Consequently, architectural theory appears to be in radical opposition to the realities of Latin American cultures and societies. This thesis does therefore engage in detail with cultural theory and postcolonial discourse, and uses post-structuralist methods of critique, as a means to engage with the whole range of politics and sociolcultural practices with which architecture is inherently related. Approached via the work of various cultural theorists, the complex reality of Latin America is not seen as a problem that requires resolution through the elimination of differences. On the contrary, and unlike architects and architectural theorists, cultural theorists aim their efforts at revealing those areas of conflict where the very fractures of Latin American cultures can be found, and where diverse and often antagonistic sociocultural groups clash while attempting to negotiate their differences. Only in this way would it be possible to create a cultural politics of difference in order to deal with cultural multiplicity in situations of inequality. Engagement with broader aspects of cultural theory will provide the possibility of questioning the validity and sufficiency of existing methods of architectural analysis in Latin America. That is why the most prominent theoretical models that have been created in Latin America during the past twenty-five years will here be placed under scrutiny. Greater engagement with issues outside an exclusively architectural discourse will not only bring to light the shortcomings of existing methods of analysis, but also provide the means to correct and enhance them. In this way, aspects that have been little theorized or which have remained invisible to the eyes of architects and architectural theorists will be revealed. The theories examined throughout this thesis will also provide the means to validate minority architectural practices that have so far been dismissed for not corresponding to parameters established by hegemonic architectural narratives. Introduction. During the past twenty-five years, various theoretical models have been created in order to describe and analyze contemporary architectural practices in Latin America. However, none of these models has been entirely successful in dealing with the complexity and dynamism of the Latin American cultures in respect of the particularities of architectural production. In fact, in many cases, architects and architectural theorists have been exclusive in their approach to cultures, in general, and architecture, in particular. Consequently, they have failed to incorporate the totality of architectural practices that participate in the development of Latin American cities and buildings, and have overlooked the existence of cultural difference. Recent Latin American architectural theory, with very few exceptions, strives towards the construction of monolithic and univocal architectural narratives with which to validate certain practices and disqualify others. Hegemonic architectural narratives have generally been created and appropriated on the basis of an exclusive selection of paradigmatic buildings that can be used as referents for the continued judgment of architectural production. The theoretical work of the Chilean architects Cristiän Femändez Cox (Modemidad apropiada) and Enrique Browne (Otra arquitectura latinoamericana) can be taken as examples of this trend. As with the work of other architects and theorists like Carlos Comas (Brazil), German Tellez (Colombia), and Marina Waisman (Argentina), among others, Fernandez and Browne's theses are supported by the same case studies. Particular attention is therefore paid to the work of Luis Barragän in Mexico, Eladio Dieste in Uruguay and Rogelio Salmona in Colombia. It is not coincidental that, while the buildings designed by the latter group of architects are taken to represent Latin American architectural practices, they also comply with the parameters of modernist Euro-American architectural narratives. In other words, the buildings designed by Barragän, Dieste and Salmona are celebrated 1 because they have reached a high degree of refinement in comparison with Euro- American architectures despite the fact that they were designed and built in Latin America.

To an uninitiated Dutch interviewer an uninitiated American applicant comes across as a braggart.”1 Cultural differences, while difficult to observe and measure, are obviously very important. Failure to appreciate and account for them can lead to embarrassing blunders, strain relationships, and drag down business performance. And the effects of culture persist even in life-and-death situations. Consider the example of Korean Air’s high incidence of plane crashes between 1970 and 2000. As an analysis of conversations recorded in the black boxes of the crashed planes revealed, the co-pilots and flight engineers in all-Korean cockpits were too deferential to their captains.

    2 The Cultural Economy of Fandom JOHN FISKE Fandom is a common feature of popular culture in industrial societies. It selects from the repertoire of mass-produced and mass-distributed entertainment certain performers, narratives or genres and takes them into the culture of a self-selected fraction of the people. They are then reworked into an intensely pleasurable, intensely signifying popular culture that is both similar to, yet significantly different from, the culture of more ‘normal’ popular audiences. Fandom is typically associated with cultural forms that the dominant value system denigrates – pop music, romance novels, comics, Hollywood mass-appeal stars (sport, probably because of its appeal to masculinity, is an exception). It is thus associated with the cultural tastes of subordinated formations of the people, particularly with those disempowered by any combination of gender, age, class and race. All popular audiences engage in varying degrees of semiotic productivity, producing meanings and pleasures that pertain to their social situation out of the products of the culture industries. But fans often turn this semiotic productivity into some form of textual production that can circulate among – and thus help to define – the fan community. Fans create a fan culture with its own systems of production and distribution that forms what I shall call a ‘shadow cultural economy’ that lies outside that of the cultural industries yet shares features with them which more normal popular culture lacks. The Western tradition is relatively negative in its attitude toward silence, especially in professional and social relations. Speech has a positive connotation and silence has a negative one. Many other cultures find that silence is a valuable component of nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication, which includes listening behaviors, is a critical component of social currency and is very important in demonstrating caring and demonstrating understanding. The ability to substitute strong emotional reactions with polite silence is important for social harmony. The effort suggests the value of silence and its association with self-restraint. It is important to consider cultural dynamics. Silence, to some, is golden. America is a relatively task-oriented culture, and Americans often want to get to the point.

Trying to learn through someone else’s cultural traditions makes getting my education even tougher. I grew up discussing things and comparing my ideas to others but classrooms are mostly just hours of listening. I want to apply what I’m learning at least hypothetically to serve my own communities, but mostly we just regurgitate facts, ideas, and theory in the abstract. I’ve learned over time how to negotiate this reality yet I wonder sometimes what it would have been like to learn within my own cultural epistemologies. My hope is that when I am a professor, I can teach in ways that embody many cultures, not just my own or the ones that are so prevalent in college and university classrooms. - African American doctoral student in education1 ulture is interwoven through teaching and learning (Banks & Banks, 1997; Gay, 2000; Tisdell, 2003). Similar to the student quoted above, each college student C brings culturally influenced ways of learning, communicating, and behaving as well as expectations about teaching with them into collegiate learning environments (Chávez, Ke, & Herrera, 2012; Ibarra, 2001; Rendón, 2009). Likewise, faculty bring cultural influences into teaching practices and into the interpretation and evaluation of students (Chávez, 2007; Ibarra, 2001). Teaching-learning relationships between faculty and students are embedded in culture. We propose that faculty apply a cultural lens to teach more inclusively across cultural frameworks.

The change in constructions of official Canadian identity was due to pressures from an ongoing dialogue in Canadian society that reflected the larger geo-political shifts taking place during the period. This dialogue helped shape the political discussion, from one focused on maintaining an out-dated national identity to one that was more representative of how many Canadians understood Canada to be. This change in political opinion accordingly transformed the official identity of the nation-state of Canada. One of them is adaptation of a person to a new cultural environment. Travellers, international companies’ staff, foreign students, diplomats, emigrants and refugees form a partial list of those who are involved in acculturation. According to Cambridge Dictionary definition the term “acculturation” means the process of changing so that you become more like people from a different culture, or of making someone change in this way [1]. Acculturation is a process in which an individual adopts, acquires and adjusts to a new cultural environment. In the process of acculturation an individual tries to preserve their own culture and to incorporate themselves into a new one. Scholars have distinguished four types of acculturation strategies on the basis of two factors. The first factor is the preservation or rejection of a person’s native culture, and the second one is the adoption or disregard for the prevailing culture. These four types are assimilation, separation, marginalization and integration. Assimilation takes place when an individual accepts the norms and values of a different culture, rejecting the norms and values of their culture. Separation is a turn-down of a dominant culture and maintenance of the native culture identity. Marginalization occurs when a person loses their cultural identity, and at the same time does not try to adjust to new cultural surrounding.

Animation/emotion: Communication seen as authentic is generally passionate and animated. Communication that is presented in a neutral or objective way is seen as less credible, and the motives of the speaker may be questioned. The assumption is that if you believe something, you will advocate for it. Truth is established through argument and debate. "Conversational style is provocative and challenging, and the intensity is focused on the validity of the ideas being discussed" (Kochman 1981 pp. 30-31). Effective teachers of African American students are often found "….displaying emotion to garner student respect" (Delpit, 1995, p. 142). African Americans tend to perceive greater emotional intensity when rating the expressions of others (Matsumoto, 1993). Directness/indirectness: Generally directly facing and talking with the person with whom you have an issue or problem is preferred. Someone who won’t face you directly shows his or her claim or problem to be invalid; the assumption is that anyone with a legitimate problem would come to the other person directly.
