Global average temperature in 2018 was by 0,99 °C above the preindustrial level (1850-1900). New record values of the heat content in the upper layers of the ocean, as well as the continued increase in global mean sea level, have been established. A decrease in the extent of the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice was noted. In 2018, 74 tropical cyclones were registered, which significantly exceeds their long-term average number (63). Floods, extreme rainfall and extratropical storms have caused hundreds of human lives and the destruction of tens of thousands of homes. -

DocuSign Envelope ID: 53EAE5A9-A79F-4FEC-82FA-A4003FD2523F TERMS OF REFERENCE Position: National expert on support and coordination of work during implementation of the second phase of the Eco Damu micro-loan program Project title and number: UNDP-GEF Project «Conservation and sustainable management of key globally important ecosystems for multiple benefits», 00101043 Duration: 12 months from the date of contract signing, 210 working days, December 2020 - December 2021 Duty station: Home based with trips to East Kazakhstan, Almaty and Turkestan regions Contract Type: Individual contract PROJECT DESCRIPTION Project background, basic information and objectives Kazakhstan has approximately 12.6 million hectares of forest, which makes it one of the most forest- rich countries in Eurasia, despite the fact that its forests amount to only 4.6% of the national territory. Approximately 95% of Kazakhstan’s forests are managed by 123 state forestry entities, which are overseen by regional governments (akimats). Under the current forest governance system, forestry entities lack sufficient capacity to effectively manage HCVF, including those forests neighboring highly biodiverse protected areas. Kazakhstan’s protected area system covers approximately 24,018,800 ha, or 8.81% (as of 2015) of the total country, although only 5% of Kazakhstan’s forests are included within protected areas. Therefore, forest ecosystems are underrepresented in the national protected area systems. Kazakhstan has three main forest ecosystem types: alpine forests, tugai (riparian) forests, and saxaul landscapes (desert and semi-desert shrubs). GEF-UNDP Project “«Conservation and sustainable management of key globally important ecosystems for multiple benefits» (hereinafter referred as Project) has being implemented in Kazakhstan since 2018. -

The Elite Sarmatian Woman's Burial

Dosmukhamedov, Studenchesky Ave. 212/1, Atyrau, 060011, Kazakhstan (Received 28 February 2019, revised 12 August 2019) Abstract This article is devoted to the study of a burial ground located in the area of Zholayshagyl (Kazakhstan). The authors describe the findings of excavations conducted in 2006 and conclude, based on their analysis, that this burial ground was the tomb of a woman, a representative of the Sarmatians. An in-depth study of the burial ground is carried out, and in particular, the clothes of the woman and her jewellery are investigated. The article also analyses data on the resettlement of the Sarmatians in Kazakhstan, and the characteristics of their life and burial culture, in particular. Introduction In 2006, Atyrau State University conducted an excavation in the wind- blown burial grounds of the Zholayshagyl sandstone located within 3.5 km north of the village of Karabau in the Kyzylkoga region. The object was a Sarmatian sand-peak grave. The Zholayshagyl sandstone has an area of 300x200 m and a height of 3x5 m, located from north to south. After the locals found some gold products here after a strong wind, the Atyrau archaeological expedition conducting research on the medieval settlement of Korgansh decided to carry out urgent excavations within the area of Zholayshagyl.
