Funasaki STATE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE HONOLULU, HAWAII The Entomology Branch of the Hawaii Department of Agriculture has maintained a beneficial organism introduction program for many years. This paper includes a list of insects introduced for biological control during 1974, and gives notes on the status of some pests and their purposely introduced natural enemies. Weed Pest Control Ageratina riparia (Regel) K. & R. (Hamakua pamakani). The stem galling tephritid, Procecidochares alani Steyskal (previously reported as P. near pleuralis Aldrich) was initially released on Hawaii on April 9, 1974 to aid in the control of Hamakua pamakani, a noxious range- land weed. By July, developing galls on stems were observed at various release sites on Hawaii and at Nuuanu, Oahu. The leaf defoliating pterophorid, Oidaematophorus sp., which was initially released in October 1973, has not been recovered to date. Clidemia hirta (L.) (Roster's curse). Light infestations and feeding damage on Clidemia by the leaf rolling pyralid, Blepharomastix ebulealis Guenee were noted in October 1974 along a two-mile stretch on the Kawaiiki Trail, Oahu at an elevation of 1,300 to 1,400 feet. This is the first recovery of this moth since its release in 1971. Insect Pest Control Aleurocanthus spiniferus Quaintance (orange spiny whitefly) Infestations of this aleyrodid were discovered for the first time in the State on foliage of roses in the Kapiolani Rose Garden, Waikiki, Oahu on July 12, 1974. Subsequent surveys revealed scattered light to heavy infestations on roses, citrus, persimmons, grapes and pears in the Waikiki, Kapahulu and Kaimuki areas. -

Exhibition of a large collection of insects from Kokee, Kauai, August, 1921, by O. H. Swezey. Fossil Insects.—Mr. Muir exhibited a pamphlet, entitled "Mesozoic Insects of Queensland," by Dr. R. J. Tillyard. He called attention particularly to the excellence of the photographs, in which the veins and even the hairs on the insect wings were easily discernible. Supella supellectilium (Serv.).—Mr. Bryan exhibited a speci men of this recently introduced Australian roach, which was 180 captured January 3, 1922, in the cottage of Colonel Clark at the Kamehameha Boys1 School, Honolulu, by Miss Clark. Plagithmysus munroi (a correction). — Mr. Swezey called attention to Nos. 5 and 6 in Dr. Perkins' paper on Plagithmy- sides (Proc. Haw. Ent. Soc, IV, 996, 1921), and to the fact that the name of the species had been omitted in the manuscript. A surmised determination as P. munroi was supplied in a foot note. -

Stibick Introduction Introduction Fruit flies in the family Tephritidae are high profile insects among commercial fruit and vegetable growers, marketing exporters, government regulatory agencies, and the scientific community. Locally, producers face huge losses without some management scheme to control fruit fly populations. At the national and international level, plant protection agencies strictly regulate the movement of potentially infested products. Consumers throughout the world demand high quality, blemish-free produce. Partly to satisfy these demands, the costs to local, state and national governments are quite high and increasing as world trade, and thus risk, increases. Thus, fruit flies impose a considerable resource tax on participants at every level, from producer to shipper to the importing state and, ultimately, to the consumer. (McPheron & Steck, 1996) Indeed, in the United States alone, the running costs per year to APHIS, Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), (the federal Agency responsible) for maintenance of trapping systems, laboratories, and identification are in excess of US$27 million per year and increasing. This figure only accounts for a fraction of total costs throughout the country, as State, County and local governments put in their share as well as the local industry affected. -

Wharton This work covers stages one through seven (of nine stages) of a classical biological control program for Mediterranean fruit fly (=medfly), Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Major research objectives concentrate on stage five (exploration and collection of natural enemies), and stage seven (testing and selecting natural enemies for additional work). Coffee was collected monthly from three locations in Kenya from November 1997 through July 1999. Four species of tephritid flies and ten parasitoid species were recovered. Four guilds of parasitoids were recorded, and two egg-prepupal endoparasitoids, Fopius caudatus (Szépligeti) and F. -

Parasitoid: A parasitic insect that lives in or on and eventually kills a larger host insect (or other arthropod). B. Host: Those animals attacked by parasitoids. II. Characteristics of Parasitoids A. Parasitoids usually destroy their hosts during development. B. The parasitoid's host is usually in the same taxonomic class (Insecta). C. Parasitoids are large relative to their hosts. D. Parasitoid adults are freeliving while only the immature stages are parasitic. E. Parasitoids develop on only one host individual during the immature stages. F. With respect to population dynamics, parasitoids are similar to predatory insects. III. C. connexa is a gall forming fly. Adults live for up to 14 days and are active in the morning, mating on Siam weed and then ovipositing in the buds. The ovipositor is inserted through the bud leaves and masses of 5 to 20 eggs are laid in the bud tip or between the bud leaves. -
