LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Welcome to the 14th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival!

We are thrilled to curate and present this year’s of , which represents the rising tide of talented filmmakers or color. It is indeed the year of the woman, as witnessed with ’s best director and best picture win at this year’s . This inspiring movement continues at Urbanworld with the festival’s Opening & Closing Night being helmed by brilliant women — Writer/ Director who has enriched us with Night Catches Us and Writer/Director/Producer Ava duVernay who has graced us with I Will Follow. Both of these cinematic gems not only feature a feminine sensibility, strength, and complexity behind the lens, but also on camera through noteworthy performances by leading ladies Kerry Washington and -Whitfield.

We are truly honored to have the accomplished Kerry Washington support Urbanworld as its Festival my black Ambassador. Her flourishing career exemplifies a multi-dimensional artistry that has distinguished her as not only an actor, but also an activist, who empowers communities of color both on and off screen. It is this spirit is a gift from nature. of purpose and impact that is likewise reflected in Urbanworld’s 2010 film slate.

Each year, we see an increase in Urbanworld alumni who return to share their progression as filmmakers. Short films and screenplays become features, actors transition to writer/directors, and marketing/PR mavens transform into self- distributors of their own content. It is indeed evolution and Urbanworld is blessed to play a role in nurturing this process. This year’s film slate continues the Urbanworld tradition of presenting diversity and excellence in filmmaking, with decisive voices leading with confidence, passion, and integrity.

Despite industry cynics, the indie film market endures and manages to flex its muscles in new and interesting ways. Filmmakers continue to innovate as content creators, producers, and distributors. With the digital age seamlessly integrated into everyday life, filmmakers must be expertly equipped with the tools and resources available to fully capitalize on the 4 screens — movies, TV, online, & mobile — driving this new media frontier. This year, we are proud to introduce the HBO hosted Urbanworld Digital, an exciting new programming track created in partnership with Jigsaw Global that will launch the festival with a series of business sessions focused on social media, gaming, and new media production.

Our presenting Sponsor BET Networks continues its unwavering support as a multi-year partner with the festival.

Their presence has become even more robust with the addition of a 2-day Actors Workshop facilitated by Actress Tasha my beautiful ` Smith and presented in collaboration with My Black Is Beautiful, as well as their inaugural TV Writers Competition, which will award a $5000 prize at the festival’s Filmmaker Awards Brunch. is how I enhance it.

Without our partners BET Networks and Founding Sponsor HBO, we would be limited in our impact. We are grateful 2010 Inc., Gamble, & Procter © for their longevity as devoted supporters, as are we with our many other essential sponsors, media partners, staff, and volunteers. Urbanworld’s reality is a true reflection of all who shape it and, in turn, share it. Thank you to everyone who 140086_a01 Burrell 08/26/10 jmd has made an indelible imprint on Urbanworld’s past, present, and future. We wish all of our 2010 festival patrons an extraordinary Urbanworld experience! The individual beauty of black women is something to celebrate. Dear :

Welcome to the 14th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival in , the independent film capital of the world!

The Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, created more than forty years ago, is dedicated to working with filmmakers as they shoot on location in New York City and serves as a division of the newly created Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. We’re also committed to diversifying the City’s film and television industry so that it more accurately reflects our vibrant population and have developed several workforce development programs to build bridges to help women, people of color and disadvantaged New Yorkers advance their careers in production.

As the one-stop shop for all production needs in the City, the Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting continues to provide premier customer service – including free exterior locations, police assistance and parking privileges. We also offer the “Made in NY” marketing credit, which provides free advertising for films and television shows that shoot here, and the “Made in NY” Discount Card Program with discounts for productions at over 950 local businesses.

Our website - www.nyc.gov/film - contains a wealth of information for everything you’ll need to know about filming in New York City. There you can download the required permit forms, sign up for our monthly electronic newsletter, and view our Hot Shots Photo Library, a digital catalog that features City-owned properties around the five boroughs. You can also check out Reel Jobs, a free weekly listing of job opportunities in the City.

I encourage you to contact my office at 311 or 212-NEW-YORK to find out just how easy it is to film in New York.

Best wishes for a successful and enjoyable festival,

Katherine Oliver Commissioner Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment

America in 1920: The Great War was over, Wall Street was about to boom and everything was for sale, even the World Series. It was a time of change when women got the vote, broadcast radio began and young people ruled the world.

On the beach in southern New Jersey sat Atlantic City, a spectacular resort known as “The World’s Playground,” a place where the rules didn’t apply. Massive hotels lined its famous Boardwalk, which featured nightclubs, amusement piers and entertainment that rivaled Broadway. For a few dollars, a working man could get away and live like a king – legally or illegally.

The undisputed ruler of Atlantic City was the town’s treasurer, Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a political fixer and backroom dealer who was equal parts politician and gangster and equally comfortable in either role. Because of its strategic location on the seaboard, the town was a hub of activity for rum-runners, minutes from Philadelphia, hours from SERIES PREMIERE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 9PM New York City and less than a day’s drive from Chicago.
