DISCOVERY OF AEDES ALBOPICTUS IN GUATEMALA' KAZUKI OGATA''3lNo ANTONIO LOPEZ SAMAYOA' ABSTRACT, Aedes albopictrs was discovered for the first time in Guatemala during June 1995. It was collected in l0 out of 15 localities sampled in and around the community of Puerto Barrios in the Department of Izabal. The location of the positive collections indicates a more rural distribution than Aedes aegypti. Sampling was conducted along the Atlantic Highway up to the capital city to determine the extent of its introduction into the country. Larvae were not found more than 4 km outside of Puerto Barrios. The principal breeding places were rubber tires, glass bottles, and metal drums. In that historical moment, an operating model was tested in Guatemala, which then served as inspiration for others in the rest of Latin America. The national, popular and democratic government of Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán was its victim and the coup leaders were coordinated and supported by the CIA: several ambassadors, reactionary military, powerful American and local entrepreneurs and high prelates of the Catholic Church. In Colonial times Its capital was the center for the government ot the entire area. It occupies the area between 13° 42' and 110 49' North Latitude and between 880 10' and 92° 30' West Longitude. It is bounded on the north and northwest by Mexico, and on the northeast by the Territory ot BeUse (British Honduras), which it stUl claims. On the east and southeast it is bordered by the Gulf of Honduras, by Honduras, and EI Salvador. On the southwest It has some 200 mUes ot coast line on the Pacific Ocean. Puerto Barrios, its eastern seaport is 1124 mUes BOuth ot New Orleans. Its area ot 48,290 square miles is about the same as the state ot Louisiana, or seven-tenths of the size of Oklahoma. Most ot its water area of 6248 square miles is included in its four best known lakes, Izabal, Peten, AtitIan, and Amatitlan. Land elevation in Guatemala varies from sea level to 18,809 feet, the altitude of Mt. Tajumulco, the highest peak. Thirty-two volcanoes range In height from 3000 to over 13,000 feet. Eleven are over 10,000 teet high. The principal range, the Cordillera de los Andes, extends across the country from Mexico southeastward toward Honduras.
