One of the pleasures of hiring a new person to serve on staff is getting to know those who applied for the position and truly see God at work in their lives. It is always a journey for the person that is being led to step out in faith and pursue a new position.

There are the faith steps to see where God leads and then the related personal faith steps of selling a home, moving, starting in a new location and new work, and on and on. The one thing I always see is God at work and leading the way to make it happen – in His time and in His way He provides.

Many of us have experienced the situation in our lives such as Isaiah 6:8, ‘Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” It can be a little scary but so rewarding to step out in faith to say “Send Me!”

I know that is true of the many leaders throughout the Kairos ministry holding the various Board, International Council, State, Advisory Council, and Team positions as they say “Yes, I will do that role.” I also know it has been true of me in coming to work at Kairos, as well as Kevin Resnover and Gina Brockmeyer as Program Coordinators.

We are blessed to have Craig Combs also say recently “yes Lord, send me” as he comes to serve as Men’s Ministry Coordinator at Kairos Prison Ministry International.

Craig has been working at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN since 1994 as an Assistant Business Manager for the School of Optometry. Before that, he was in sales and also an Instructor at the University. Craig holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters of Health Administration degree.

His ministry work with Kairos as a volunteer has been in two different facilities in Indiana over the past 10 years where he has led a Weekend, been in different roles in the teams, served on two different Advisory Councils, and has been very active in the state. Craig has also served as an Advanced Kairos Trainer since 2011 for Kairos Inside.

In addition, Craig has been very active in Walk to Emmaus (since 1999), Chrysalis (since 2002), and Community Bible Study (since 2001) holding numerous roles, leadership positions, and teaching positions with each. He is very active in his local church and community.

Please cover Craig in your prayers and support him as he makes the move to Florida and joins the staff in serving the Lord, Jesus Christ in this wonderful ministry of Kairos.

Every element of the Weekend program is to be done, and done in its proper sequence. The wisdom of Kairos has established the program as the best method.

Unlike Kairos Outside, Kairos Inside Weekends do not have individual themes or scriptures selected by the Weekend Leaders, and Kairos Inside Weekends do not have individual logos or shields designed for each Weekend.

The role of a volunteer on a Kairos Inside Weekend, or any Kairos Weekend, is to plant seeds – seeds of love. Volunteers must understand that we are just On Thursday, the Participants encounter Kairos, instruments of God’s love, and in Kairos we must and all the activities are designed to reduce anxiety joyfully lay down our will and serve in obedience to and begin making Participants increasingly more God and to the Kairos method. comfortable with their new friends, our volunteers, and each other. The power of the Kairos ministry comes from being focused as advocates for Christ and in covering our Friday is about encountering self and the Weekends with prayer. Participants focus on gaining a better understanding of themselves and their standing with Christ. As all volunteers know, the Kairos Riverbanks define the boundaries of the ministry that must be honored. Saturday’s focus is on encountering Christ, and the Only by honoring these boundaries is the framework day’s activities introduce the Participants to Jesus and integrity of the ministry securely maintained as and the Body of Christ, encouraging them to find Kairos! Spring 2017 God’s Special Time/Page 5 Kairos Torch Ministry Seen But Not Heard

By Kevin Resnover Youth Ministry Coordinator

“Children (youth) should be seen but not heard” is heard. The screaming infant may not be a far cry from Christ’s words in Matthew 19:14- able to formulate the words to say, but he knows that “Let the children alone, don’t prevent them his screams will get his parents attention; and today’s from coming to me…” but it certainly was what generation knows that posting on social networks or protesting in the streets will get someone’s attention.

I deeply appreciate the theme of Kairos Prison Ministry and it’s usage in the Kairos Torch program: “Listen, Listen, Love, Love.” It cuts to the chase with profound wisdom and understanding of humanity’s basic needs. I equally appreciate the Kairos Torch volunteers that have taken to heart this theme and live it out with the youth they have been called to mentor and minister.

Not long ago, I received a large envelope through the mail from one of our long-time Kairos Torch volunteers. In it were several letters, poems, and written expressions from youth that had participated in a Kairos Torch Weekend and the mentoring program. Each of these youth found their voice through the care of a loving mentor that listened carefully to their stories and presented them with choices for hope and a many in my generation, those generations before us future. and those coming on the scene repeatedly heard. In fact, I recently encountered a young father teaching those principles to his children; not using those precise words, but certainly implanting those exact principles. I cringed as I watched him miss opportunity after opportunity to address their innocent statements, and what seemed to him as silly questions into powerful teachable moments.

I’m sometimes asked why this generation of youth is so quick to take to the streets and so assertive in espousing their views (when it’s not asked for). My mind quickly goes back to Matthew 19, where those forward-thinking parents knew the importance of having their children front and center to receive Christ’s blessing through physical touch, spontaneous listening and words for abundant living. No matter what the age or the position we Space will not allow us to share all of their writings but hold in life, we all have a need to be heard and here are couple to read: touched in positive ways. When that need is not met, we often find other ways to feed it and to be (Continued on Page 7) Spring 2017 God’s Special Time/Page 6 Kairos Torch Ministry Seen but Not Heard (continued)

To the People of Kairos…

The last few days spent with you all has been loving, helpful, and it was a learning experience that I’ll never forget! The last 10 months that I’ve been saved has shown me that God is the only way and then you all came and showed me how to forgive.

I’ve been able to forgive my mother for all the pain and abuse she put in my life, and to be able to forgive the people that I love the most for not doing anything. I am free from Our Life Would Be The Same unforgiveness, and it is because God has put you all in my life and allowed me to I remember a time when each day was long, understand what forgiveness means. Being seen is nice for some, but being heard is vital to all of us. Taking the time to actively listen with our hearts will have a profound effect in the lives of those who God has placed near to us.

Spring 2017 God’s Special Time/Page 7 Who We Are Ways to Give

There are many ways to give to Kairos Prison Ministry. One way is to give a Legacy gift. If you haven’t already, we pray you will consider including Kairos in your will.

Recently, a faithful donor/volunteer shared, “Kairos is always in my heart. I want you to know that Kairos is in my will. I want to make sure that many years to come those that have only known hopelessness all their lives continue to find hope and healing when they ask Jesus into their hearts.”

Another way to give to Kairos Prison Ministry is through Appreciated stocks. A donor has shared how simple it was to transfer her appreciated stocks to Kairos Prison Ministry. Giving appreciated stock is a great way both to reduce your taxes and give more generously. Wonderings as I Wander By John Miller, International Council President

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. In January, I was appointed as the pastor for a small church in Indiana and that journey has led me through some very interesting situations and people who I have met have given me a new perspective on life. The area I’m serving is a small community of about 2,100 people and it takes me back to my childhood days of living in a small community. It’s refreshing in that people rely on one another more often and you hear the phrase, “How can I help?” quite often. Yes, they have their problems and drugs, etc. plague them as well, just not to the extent of a larger city.

What I see is a Christian community coming together much as we do in Kairos. However, as pastors, people in the community rely on us to help lead, just as our Weekend Leaders lead us like shepherds. Not so different that when we read the 23rd Psalm. (“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”) When we go in behind those prison walls and when we meet with the loved ones of the incarcerated, we are invading Satan’s domain. He wants to keep those men, women and children in the dark. He does not want them to see the light, the light that you bring; the light and love of Jesus Christ.

Recently, I was a little put off by the actions of a situation and I prayed about it. God spoke to me saying simply, “Love them.” Just as He loved, we are also to love. You see, when Jesus went to the cross, He died for ALL of us. Not just the “good guys,” but everyone. All we have to do is to accept. That’s what we do in Kairos, “Listen, Listen, Love, Love.” Then we get to see the Holy Spirit do its work. What a gift!

As we enter this Lenten season with Palm Sunday and Easter before us, perhaps you are doing something special during this time. Perhaps you’re reading the Bible more, perhaps fasting, perhaps giving up something. Pope Francis puts it well. He says, “Fast from hate, fast from indifference.” When we fast from hate and indifference and allow love to come forth, wonderful things happen. We’ve seen it in the prisons, we can see it out of the prisons. May you enjoy your Lenten journey and may you experience the joy that comes from being with Christ every day of your life. Kairos Prison Ministry International In Loving Memory

Often, people who have lost a loved one ask that a tribute gift be made to their favorite charity in lieu of flowers. A memorial contribution to Kairos Prison Ministry pays thoughtful tribute to the memory of your loved one. Donations will support sharing Christ’s love with the incarcerated.

A memorial letter will be sent to the family of the bereaved, along with the name(s) of the donors. The amount of the gift will not be disclosed. Donors will receive a letter from Kairos Prison Ministry for their tax-exempt contribution.

Letters from Kairos Graduates:

Dear Kairos,

I have been blessed over the past weekend as to being part of the Idaho (Boise) 4-day retreat #17. I want to thank your ministry teams for their authentic Christianity that we, as inmates, don’t see from our fellow brothers with their lack of understanding of God’s love – living in their own infinite views of what love means. But these men - I have become blessed to know - are the Kairos Idaho Chapter. They are wonderful lights of Christ’s love. Praise be to God that in the appointed time, Christ brought these men into my life and rekindled the flame within me through the inspiration of the Lord. This Weekend allowed me personally to take off the prison shield and just show the miraculous works the Lord does within any man that the Lord wants to use. Please keep up the work that you are doing for the Lord and I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of Kairos #17.

Zachery, Idaho State CI Graduate

Hi,

I just wanted to thank you because I just went through the Kairos program and I loved it. You should try to get into every prison. It was the best time I ever had in prison. Your program has a lot of positivity and I needed that, because there is so much negativity in here that we need something uplifting.

Recently, Kairos, along with other ministries, received this well-written reminder from the Indiana Department of Corrections. Unfortunately, we do have Kairos volunteers in various states that get removed from service in the facilities due to overstepping the boundaries of the facility or the DOC. We realize each state has slightly different rules of engagement on what is allowed; however, this is fairly standard to most states as a guideline. We share this with permission and to help us remember to honor the rules of the facility and DOC, along with the rules of Kairos as we serve those impacted by incarceration.

Email from the Indiana Department of Corrections:

Recently the Department of Correction has terminated several volunteers, some of them with years of experience, for giving money to offenders through the JPay system. In total, these volunteers lost several thousand dollars in a short amount of time. We believe these are isolated problems, but want to be proactive in protecting you and all of our volunteers. Please remember that there is never a reason for giving money, or any other goods/services to an offender or his/her family. Don’t forget your training on offender manipulation, and the basic formula of:

TIME + EXPOSURE = OPPORTUNITY FOR MANIPULATION

If an offender asks you to send money, carry a message, contact family or otherwise go beyond the scope of your volunteer duties, please notify staff. Manipulation typically begins with an offender fishing for a victim by making simple requests, but escalates to larger demands once the hook is set.

Please look out for one another and don’t hesitate to ask your community involvement coordinator, chaplain or any other staff for guidance and help.

The relationship between volunteers and offenders is predominantly positive. Not only do offenders and the facility benefit greatly from this relationship but often the volunteers experience the same positive effects. However, due to the nature of a correctional environment, it is the responsibility of everyone involved to maintain very strict boundaries to ensure a safety and secure environment.

The Indiana Department of Correction takes a firm stance prohibiting fraternization. For the purposes of a correctional environment, fraternization is defined as relationships with offenders that go beyond the normal scope of the role of a volunteer. The purpose is to avoid potential conflicts of interest or impairment of supervision and rehabilitation, and to provide humane and respectful treatment of offenders. The information below provides clarification about what fraternization means in a correctional environment.

Volunteers are prohibited from exchanging goods/services/funds with: · Any incarcerated offender · Any offender under the supervision of probation/parole · Any family/friends/associates of an offender

A volunteer must not personally intercede or advocate on behalf of an offender regarding: · facility discipline; · programming; · rules of supervision; · employment; · Parole, pardon, commutation or any judicial matters.

Very clear boundaries should be respected and any contact that could appear to violate these conditions must be reported to the Community Involvement Coordinator. Communication is the best tool to prevent situations where you are overstepping your boundaries. If it is discovered after the fact, you may not be able to continue to serve at that facility.

• If you discover that someone you know or are acquainted with becomes incarcerated or under probation/ parole supervision (e.g. family member, mild acquaintances, former co-worker, a neighbor, family friend, etc.), report this to the Community Involvement Coordinator. Relationships must be evaluated to determine whether your continued volunteer service will pose a conflict of interest at any IDOC facilities. • Volunteers must not get involved in any way with an offender’s family or friends. • Treat all offenders impartially; do not grant special privileges, considerations, contacts, etc. to any individual offender. • In order to maintain a professional relationship, offenders are required to address staff/volunteers by their title (Mr./Ms./Dr./Sgt./ Officer) and last name. • Volunteers must not use first names or nicknames in addressing inmates; always use Mr./Ms. [last name]. • Offenders must not be addressed by a title (Rev., Dr., etc.)

Any questions regarding an offender relationship should be directed to the Community Involvement Coordinator. Constant and continuous communication with the Community Involvement Coordinator is your best defense to defuse compromising situations before they occur. If an offender makes any type of request of any item or favor or anything outside the scope of your program/service, report it immediately to the Community Involvement Coordinator. Think of it this way – only provide an offender with something you could provide every offender at the facility, such as a prayer, encouraging words, or a listening ear.

The above also applies to volunteers asking their own family or friends to intercede as a go-between.

We hope this clears up any misconceptions and also refreshes what you’ve heard in the past. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about any of the above information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Indiana DOC email to volunteers

Letter from Kairos Graduates:

Dear Kairos Prison Ministry,

Hello, my name is Terry. I’m writing to show the best way I can, which is through the transparency of words, how much I appreciate every time your ministry blesses us with the delicious cookies and I know everyone in the system feels the same, even if they don’t express it. I decided to write because over the 9 ½ years I’ve been in the system, 8 ½ of those years you have graced us with your love consistently. You’re not judgmental, it’s as if you embrace everyone’s tribulations with care – as though you were a mother of sorts. I just wanted to say thank you and let you know the love is appreciated.

Truly, Terry, a Kairos Graduate

Page 14/Spring 2017 God’s Special Time Kairos Training Advanced Kairos Training is for Kairos Inside, Kairos Outside, and Kairos Torch volunteers who are in or will be in a Weekend leadership role, including Advisory Council or State Chapter positions, anywhere within the Kairos program. Advanced Kairos Training gives the what, who and why of the Kairos ministry. Kairos policy requires that all Weekend leaders must have completed the entire training course 12 to 24 months prior to leading a Weekend.

PRINCIPLE STATEMENTS CONCERNING ADVANCED KAIROS TRAINING EXPENSES

1. All Advanced Kairos Trainings are essentially free to any and all attendees. However, paying the expenses of an attendee for training is borne by the state sending its volunteers to a training in or out of its local state. This means that all Advisory Councils or State Chapter Committees should be budgeting for any training expenses deemed necessary for their future Weekend Leaders or other attendees that the Advisory Council or State Chapter Committee wants to attend. 2. Advisory Councils or State Chapter Committees should encourage their volunteers (who may have been used to paying out of their own pocket previously to a Host State) to make their donations to their local Advisory Council instead to help build the budget to allow for more volunteers to attend trainings.

BE SURE TO BRING YOUR PROGRAM MANUAL WITH YOU TO THE TRAINING You must complete the entire Advanced Kairos Training in order to receive your certificate and become a Weekend Leader.
