Promontory Post February 2016 - Volume 4 - Issue 2 In This Issue (Click title to read the article) Thoughts from the Superintendent Division News Items What Happened Last Month 2016 NMRA Elections Presentation/Workshop Schedule 2019 NMRA Convention News Division Operations Group News Events of Interest Layout Tours Classifieds Intermountain Train Expo The Club Car Achievement Program Division Officers and Volunteers Division Rolling Stock Meeting Information Thoughts from the Superintendent It is with great pleasure that I announce the new location for our divisions monthly event starting on 21 May 2016. We will be meeting at the Discovery Gateway, 444 West 100 South, Salt Lake City. This is the new Children’s Museum at the Gateway Shopping Center. We have been given the opportunity to refurbish, rebuild, revitalize, and maintain a small model railroad layout currently owned by the museum. As compensation for our efforts we will get the opportunity to have a meeting location that allows us room to grow our membership and attendance, a place that we can do smelly, messy, dirty projects and clinics that we can’t do at our current location, Jordan Valley Medical Center – West Valley Campus. The following are some of the reasoning behind this decision to move: We are outgrowing the present location. 25 is the average attendance and about maxes out the seating capacity. We will have access to a larger client base to attract new members. Gateway has a large Facebook following and calendar following. They will advertise our presence and programs to their members. At the hospital, we only have the hospital staff and sick people to draw from. We will have access to their workroom to do our messy, smelly, and dirty projects at the same location; negating the need to find another location. We appreciate Blaine Holbrook opening his home and workshop for this kind of stuff in the past. Parking is a potential problem. However, we have solutions: Gateway has 3 Hour parking for $1.00, not that burdensome. There is limited free parking along Rio Grande St and just a few blocks away. You can park free at Central Station and ride Trax within the Free Zone to the Planetarium station. You can ride any combination of UTA public transportation,: Bus, Trax, or FrontRunner to get from many places along the Wasatch Front. You can Car Pool to share the expenses with a buddy. We will be able to grow interest in the hobby by having the public watch us as we work on the layout. We could also invite the public to participate with us. We have a wonderful opportunity to advertise our Intermountain Train Expo to all the patrons of the Gateway Discovery. There are many of our members who dream about improving or starting a new layout. Here is a chance for you to work alongside the masters and learn the techniques first hand. We will have a chance to do fund raising for our group at this new venue. We will be able to build interest in the children and their parents in this family friendly hobby. NMRA members will be considered partners with the Children’s Museum and thus will not be required to pay the entrance fee. If you bring children with you, as long as they don’t use the other displays, they will also have free admittance. NMRA members who find an interest in helping out with other museum projects will have no entrance fees. The NMRA will not be charged with use of the Theater, Gallery, or the workroom. We can institute Al Hovey’s Kids N’ Trains program We will have the space We will have a ready supply of participants. Children can start their own pizza pie layout. These layouts can be featured at our Intermountain Train Expo, thus giving a reason for the child’s family and friends to visit our show. Layouts open the opportunity to cross-advertise our presence at Gateway Discovery, thus increasing the level of participation there. Those are my thoughts. What are yours? I'd love to hear from you Jack Chase Superintendent Northern Utah Division of the NMRA 801-323-1148 [email protected] Click Here to Return to the Table of Contents What Happened Last Month The January 16th, 2016 event for the Northern Utah Division was held at the OT&W's 25th Anniversary Train Show at Thanksgiving Point. Jim Wanlass received additional certificates from the region for his work towards Master Model Railroader. The meeting was changed to the kitchen area at the last minute, but we are grateful for the OT&W for allowing us to invade their show. The division setup the "Box Car Races", Geoff Carter and Fred Baney brought their Time Saver modules that educated as well as entertained many of the kids and adults at the show. Our featured presentation was by Rick Luther on Cheap Tools, Tips and Tricks. The presentation featured many ways to create your own tools to make your modeling easier. There are many things that can be purchased at "Dollar" stores to help save money on modeling tools. Things like a ballast spreader made from an old tooth brush. Gluing clamps from inexpensive wood cloths pins. A power sander from a vibrating tooth brush with different sanding disks or a cheap magnetic gluing jig from a few supplies from the home improvement store. Gary is located at 4386 S. Charles Drive in West Valley, UT. Honestly, my GPS always gets me close, but never quite there. If you need directions in your struggle, call me (801-323-1148 probably not much help!) or Gary at 801-966- 5247 for the reality of getting there. Our plan is to start at 10:00 AM sharp and to be finished early afternoon. As most of you know, Gary's layout is really beautiful and a joy on which to operate. Mark up if you you are ready for a fun filled day! As most of you will recall, we need a large crew to operate on Gary's layout. Thanks. As I always state, please be very respectful to Gary's layout. He is being terrific is sharing such a real prize with us. Of course, it is always polite to bring snacks/drinks to share with your fellow crew. I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 10:00 AM sharp.. It will be a fun filled day! • Winter Ozone Pollution in Utah's Uinta Basin Is Attenuating
atmosphere Article Winter Ozone Pollution in Utah’s Uinta Basin is Attenuating Marc L. Mansfield * and Seth N. Lyman Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Utah State University Uintah Basin, 320 North Aggie Boulevard, Vernal, UT 84078, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: marc.mansfi[email protected] Abstract: High concentrations of ground-level ozone have been observed during wintertime in the Uinta Basin of western Utah, USA, beginning in 2010. We analyze existing ozone and ozone precursor concentration data from 38 sites over 11 winter seasons and conclude that there has been a statistically significant (p < 0.02) decline in ozone concentration over the previous decade. Daily exceedances of the National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone (70 ppb) have been trending downward at the rate of nearly four per year. Ozone and NOx concentrations have been trending downward at the rates of about 3 and 0.3 ppb per year, respectively. Concentrations of organics in 2018 were at about 30% of their values in 2012 or 2013. Several markers, annual ozone exceedance counts and median ozone and NOx concentrations, were at their largest values in the period 2010 to 2013 and have never recovered since then. We attribute the decline to (1) weakening global demand for oil and natural gas and (2) more stringent pollution regulations and controls, both of which have occurred over the previous decade. We also see evidence of ozone titration when snow cover is absent. Keywords: winter ozone; data analysis; Uinta Basin; Utah 1. Introduction Many winters in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah display high concentrations of ground-level ozone.
