Thoughts from the Superintendent

It is with great pleasure that I announce the new location for our divisions monthly event starting on 21 May 2016.

We will be meeting at the Discovery Gateway, 444 West 100 South, . This is the new Children’s Museum at the Gateway Shopping Center.

We have been given the opportunity to refurbish, rebuild, revitalize, and maintain a small model railroad layout currently owned by the museum. As compensation for our efforts we will get the opportunity to have a meeting location that allows us room to grow our membership and attendance, a place that we can do smelly, messy, dirty projects and clinics that we can’t do at our current location, Jordan Valley Medical Center – West Valley Campus.

The following are some of the reasoning behind this decision to move:

We are outgrowing the present location. 25 is the average attendance and about maxes out the seating capacity. We will have access to a larger client base to attract new members. Gateway has a large Facebook following and calendar following. They will advertise our presence and programs to their members. At the hospital, we only have the hospital staff and sick people to draw from. We will have access to their workroom to do our messy, smelly, and dirty projects at the same location; negating the need to find another location. We appreciate Blaine Holbrook opening his home and workshop for this kind of stuff in the past. Parking is a potential problem. However, we have solutions:

Gateway has 3 Hour parking for $1.00, not that burdensome. There is limited free parking along Rio Grande St and just a few blocks away. You can park free at Central Station and ride Trax within the Free Zone to the Planetarium station. You can ride any combination of UTA public transportation,: Bus, Trax, or FrontRunner to get from many places along the Wasatch Front. You can Car Pool to share the expenses with a buddy.

We will be able to grow interest in the hobby by having the public watch us as we work on the layout. We could also invite the public to participate with us. We have a wonderful opportunity to advertise our Intermountain Train Expo to all the patrons of the Gateway Discovery. There are many of our members who dream about improving or starting a new layout. Here is a chance for you to work alongside the masters and learn the techniques first hand. We will have a chance to do fund raising for our group at this new venue. We will be able to build interest in the children and their parents in this family friendly hobby. NMRA members will be considered partners with the Children’s Museum and thus will not be required to pay the entrance fee. If you bring children with you, as long as they don’t use the other displays, they will also have free admittance. NMRA members who find an interest in helping out with other museum projects will have no entrance fees. The NMRA will not be charged with use of the Theater, Gallery, or the workroom. We can institute Al Hovey’s Kids N’ Trains program

We will have the space We will have a ready supply of participants. Children can start their own pizza pie layout. These layouts can be featured at our Intermountain Train Expo, thus giving a reason for the child’s family and friends to visit our show. Layouts open the opportunity to cross-advertise our presence at Gateway Discovery, thus increasing the level of participation there.

Those are my thoughts. What are yours? I'd love to hear from you

What Happened Last Month

The January 16th, 2016 event for the Northern Utah Division was held at the OT&W's 25th Anniversary Train Show at Thanksgiving Point. Jim Wanlass received additional certificates from the region for his work towards Master Model Railroader. The meeting was changed to the kitchen area at the last minute, but we are grateful for the OT&W for allowing us to invade their show. The division setup the "Box Car Races", Geoff Carter and Fred Baney brought their Time Saver modules that educated as well as entertained many of the kids and adults at the show.

Our featured presentation was by Rick Luther on Cheap Tools, Tips and Tricks. The presentation featured many ways to create your own tools to make your modeling easier. There are many things that can be purchased at "Dollar" stores to help save money on modeling tools. Things like a ballast spreader made from an old tooth brush. Gluing clamps from inexpensive wood cloths pins. A power sander from a vibrating tooth brush with different sanding disks or a cheap magnetic gluing jig from a few supplies from the home improvement store. You can download a pdf document of the presentation from our website from this link: http://northernutahnmra.org/wp- content/uploads/2016/02/CheapToolsTipsTricks0.pdf

Division Operations Group News

Saturday, February 27 is our monthly ops session for the DOGs at Gary's Salt Lake Southern layout. Gary is located at 4386 S. Charles Drive in West Valley, UT. Honestly, my GPS always gets me close, but never quite there. If you need directions in your struggle, call me (801-323-1148 probably not much help!) or Gary at 801-966- 5247 for the reality of getting there. Our plan is to start at 10:00 AM sharp and to be finished early afternoon. As most of you know, Gary's layout is really beautiful and a joy on which to operate.

Mark up if you you are ready for a fun filled day! As most of you will recall, we need a large crew to operate on Gary's layout. Thanks.

As I always state, please be very respectful to Gary's layout. He is being terrific is sharing such a real prize with us. Of course, it is always polite to bring snacks/drinks to share with your fellow crew.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all of you Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 10:00 AM sharp.. It will be a fun filled day!

Regards,

Jack Chase Crew Chief -- DOGs Northern Utah Division of the NMRA Proud Host of the 2019 National NMRA Convention & Train Show

Layout Tours

There is no layout tour currently scheduled for February. In March there will be a double event! We have the Hostlers show on the first weekend of March and Rick Luther is hosting a tour of his Northern Montana Line on March 12th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Saturday March 12th, 2016 1 PM to 4 PM

Rick Luther's Northern Montana Line Location:7664 West Bridgton Drive, Magna, Utah Contact: Rick Luther at [email protected]

When Rick is not editing the division newsletter or creating graphics for our annual train show, he has been modeling the Milwaukee Road's Northern Montana Line. The NML is located in Montana's "Golden Triangle" grain belt. This HO scale layout is a 10' x 19' double deck, around the wall, point to point layout. The layout features a helix, large steel trestle and staging tracks. The layout is currently has all the track work finished and is in the early stages of scenery and detailing.

Rules: There is no handicap access. There is no smoking inside. The layout is on the lower floor and entry is through the front door and down the steps. There is a bathroom available. Parking on Bridgton Drive is available and adjacent cross streets can be used as well. The layout can handle 5 or 6 visitors at a time. Please feel free to ask questions and take pictures.

Etiquette: When visiting, don’t criticize and don’t touch the equipment. Stay as long as you like, being mindful of other visitors so as not to overfill the room.

For more information, contact Pete Harmon at [email protected] or at 914-319-0430.

Achievement Program

Great news! The Northern Utah Division led the entire Rocky Mountain Region with the most AP Awards in 2015! Let’s keep it up in 2016! Congratulations to Jack and Rick for getting their Golden Spike. Now let’s work on getting certificates guys. I earned my Chief Dispatcher, Master Builder – Cars and Model Railroad Author Certificates. Dale and Al also received (finally) their Model Railroad Author Certificate which was officially earned in 2014. Gary Myers is now the Region AP Chairman and has gotten all the backlog of items up-to-date now. Thanks Gary!

I will be adding a section to the webpage showing (and linking to) work that was done to achieve the certificates. If you have pictures you want me to add please email them to me. Also, if you have web pages or other online areas showcasing your work I can include that as well. One of the purposes of the AP Program is learning to be a better modeler. By sharing with others we can help inspire them. By actually doing we can improve our skills. Let’s do both!

On another topic, this last week the Utah Live Steamers Club had a meeting. You should have heard by now that the City of Saratoga Springs is building Shay Park. Although the city is a little behind schedule it is nearing completion. I heard the city decided to not do it in phases but to “do it right from the start” which is great! The decision was made to purchase the rail for the first section of track which will be a 700’ loop. There are enough funds to also purchase the screws, tie plates and track joiners. Some pressure treated lumber is already purchased but more donations are needed to purchase the rest. Any monetary donations are readily accepted. Please contact Mike Hansen at [email protected] The Club is a 501(c)(3).

The Club is also in the process of submitting paperwork to be a 100% NMRA Club. We will need more volunteers to help with laying track and eventually running trains! For more info you can go to the Saratoga Springs web site, the Club’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/cmry260/ or it’s web site: http://uvls.org/. Currently the Facebook page has the most up to date information.

You can also email Mike to be added the email list to receive periodic updates. This is an exciting project for Northern Utah County. Even if you live in the Salt Lake area it’s easy to get to off of Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs (a little Northwest of the Wal-mart.) In sports it’s important to cross-train – play or practice in another sport other than your main one. You can do that here too. My main scale is HO/HOn3 but Live Steam or 1 ½” scale is a fun way to diversify and add another interesting aspect to the hobby. Plus you can actually ride on your model instead of just watching it! Come join us at our next meeting and that way we can enjoy the journey together!

2016 DIVISION CAR

The 2016 Northern Utah Division car will be a Utah Poultry car. Daylight Orange sides, oxide ends and roof, MILK WHITE EGGS is white outlined in red, the rest of the lettering is black. While these cars were loaded in Utah with “MILK WHITE EGGS”, they traveled throughout the United States delivering these special eggs.

The Utah Poultry Producers Association was formed in 1923 to improve the quality of eggs. The association was very successful, Utah’s “MILK WHITE EGGS” commanded the highest prices in the leading markets of the country. Most of the eggs were shipped to market ( City was a major market) in Utah Poultry Producer refrigerator cars reproduced in HO scale by Accurail for the Northern Utah Division, NMRA. We have a photograph with numbers 6198, 6199, 6202 and 6205 and another showing at least nineteen Utah Poultry Producer cars (no numbers are readable). The Northern Utah Division car is numbered 6199 and renumbering decals will be available.

Utah Poultry Car $35 - Shipping $5 (No shipping needed if you are picking it up at an event.)

To reserve your car please contact Stan Jenning at 801-967-0999 or order from our website http://northernutahnmra.org/club-car/.
