In addition to the crime updates we regularly send out through wmnow we also want to keep you updated with some of the other positive work that your local policing teams in the Kings Norton, Longbridge, Weoley and Northfield have been doing during May. In May, we welcomed Sgt Sharon Brain to the Constituency. Sgt Brain replaces Sgt Tandy as the Kings Norton Policing Supervisor following Sgt Tandy’s move to a new role. We wish both of them the best of luck in their new roles. Officers have continued to target the people who are causing the most harm to our communities. Officers from all four Policing teams continue to carry out high visibility patrols in and around vulnerable areas and areas of high demand. Several initiatives are being utilised in an effort to deter, detect and disrupt criminal and ASB related activity. Over the last few weeks the teams have been supported by additional resources to support these initiatives, which have included pre-planned high visibility patrols, ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) operations as well as officers using their stop & search powers and enforcement of the current PSPO (Public Space Protection Order) which is in affect in The Fold area of Kings Norton and Northfield High Street. Over the last couple of weeks the teams have executed a number of warrants in the area which have resulted in two arrests and drugs and cash seized. Last week officers from the Weoley Castle and Kings Norton Policing teams and supported by colleagues from our Force Support Unit (@FSU_WMP) executed a warrant at an address in Alder Lane, Northfield which resulted in the seizure of a significant amount of Class A drugs and cash, one person was also arrested. Acting on intelligence and concerns raised at an address in Norrington Road officers from the Weoley team attended an address and discovered a substantial amount of cannabis being grown at the address. This has resulted in 540 plants being seized and taken off the streets. No arrests have yet been made but enquiries continue. Although not connected, this was followed two days later by a further drugs warrant being executed at an address in the Hawkesley area of Kings Norton. Officers from Kings Norton, Northfield, Longbridge, FSU and @WMPDogs arrested a female for drugs supply. On the 17th May 2019, following some fantastic work by the Northfield Policing Team, Birmingham Magistrates Court issued a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) to a 32 year old man following persistent shoplifting offences in the Northfield and West Heath area. The order prohibits him from entering certain retail premises and from entering a defined exclusion zone. Any breach of these conditions will result in further action being taken. Sgt David Lamerton from the Northfield Policing Team said: “We hope the issuing of this CBO will reassure people that we will deal robustly with anyone who persistently cause harm to our community. We hope this order will improve the lives of people who have suffered from his behaviour and we will continue to take positive action in order to keep Northfield a safe place to live and work.” PCSO’s Luke Field and Karen Sutton along with a couple of local residents took part in a community speedwatch on Alwold Road and Middle Park Road, this was in response to concerns raised to the team from residents in the area; warning letters have been sent out to the registered keepers of those vehicles identified and we will also consider carrying out an enforcement operation if required. As well as speeding vehicles, officers have been targeting the illegal use of vehicles in the area and have seized eight vehicles already this month for a variety of reasons but mostly for no insurance. Northfield Constituency Policing Teams Connecting & Building Kings Norton - Northfield - Weoley Castle - Longbr idge Our work with young people. Youth engagement is vital, our focus is now very much on partnership work to reduce harm through prevention and intervention at the earliest opportunity. Working better with partners and communities we will protect young people from harm, build trust through engagement, enhance lives and intervene early in an effort prevent future offending. We want to build positive relationships with the young people who live in our area and provide young people with opportunities, life skills and knowledge to enable and empower them to make positive life choices, Inspired Choices is part of our response to this new focus. Inspired Choices is an award winning Multi-agency Early Intervention, Prevention and Engagement programme for young people, organised by West Midlands Police in partnership with West Midlands Fire Service, Birmingham Youth Services, Secondary Schools and many other supportive agencies and businesses including National Trust, Willmott Dixon. Launched in the Northfield Constituency in February 2018 the programme is now being replicated in the Edgbaston Constituency, and from September 2019 will also be delivered in the Birmingham West area, starting in Aston. Inspired Choices has so far worked with Seventy young people from seven different schools and now offers young people the opportunity to gain a personal development qualification. The Schools will refer up to Twelve students who they believe would benefit the most from the programme, we will then work with these students once a week over a ten week period where they will be given the opportunity to work with various organisations and take part in a variety of challenging activities. These activities have been designed to enhance social, vocational and teamwork skills, raise career aspirations, help young people ‘connect’ with their local communities and identify further youth engagement opportunities for young people in their community. Previous groups have seen the young people, learning survival skills and den building with the National Trust, taken part in drill training, learnt first aid and took part in problem solving exercises with Red Watch at Northfield Fire Station. We also want them the start looking ahead to their futures which is why we work with construction company Willmott Dixon who highlight the different pathways into employment for young people and speak to them about the skills and personal attributes they look for when looking to employ young people. “Young people will be presented with opportunities to make negative life choices or be dragged into anti-social behaviour or crime, our aim is to empower them to have the confidence to make positive choices.” Andy Ryan, Connect & Build Officer, Birmingham West NPU. Next month ‘our work with young people’ will focus on our engagement with Primary School Children. Northfield Constituency Policing Teams April 2019 Newsletter Kings Norton - Northfield - Weoley Castle - Longbridge Street Watch Updates All Four Northfield Wards have Street Watch Schemes in operation and they continue to go from strength to strength. Between them they have so far completed over 100 patrols and have dealt with or reported numerous issues such as fly-tipping, damaged street furniture, recovery of knives found in the street, as well as speaking to people and highlighting the scheme to other residents they meet. Last week, some of the members of the Weoley Castle Street Watch Scheme were invited to the ‘Love Weoley’ awards evening which was held at Shenley Academy. As well as enjoying an evening of food and entertainment they were also presented with a Local Heroes Award for the hard work and commitment they all give to help make Weoley Castle a better and safer place to live and work. On Saturday 25th May, our Connect and Build Officers Andy & Sam along with Street Watch members from across Birmingham joined colleagues from across the emergency services in support of the 22nd Birmingham Pride Parade. As well as sharing the love, we also raised the profile of volunteer initiatives such as Street Watch and Neighbourhood Watch. It was a great occasion and made even better by the great weather, vibrant sea of colour and great music. Neighbourhood Watch Our Connect & Build team now have a quantity of NHW street / lamp post signs available to local Co-ordinators as well as self adhesive window stickers for NHW members.     COVID Marshals • 25 COVID Marshals and 8 Park Marshals employed since November providing a hi-vis presence on the street. • Visiting all Wards but are particularly focusing on those with the highest infection rates. • Assisting with surge testing in Great Park and Frankley. • Providing advice to businesses on good practice and to citizens on the use of face coverings. • Eyes and ears for Enforcement Team providing valuable feedback on businesses who are not complying with the legislation so that enforcement work can be prioritised. • Large number of “free” face coverings are being distributed by the COVID Marshals on a daily basis. To date over 18,500 face coverings have been distributed. • Public interactions has now a last fallen considerably since the latest lockdown was introduced. (mid Jan-Feb) • Enclosed shopping centres found to have the highest level of non-compliance with regards to the wearing of face coverings. • Between the 16th Jan and 14th Feb the majority of face coverings (40% - 1,345) were distributed in the City Centre. • 446 masks were distributed by the Park COVID Marshals (13%). With foodbanks relying on food donations more than ever to feed local people in crisis, the contributions will help the Trussell Trust to continue providing essential support during this challenging time. As a small, sweet appreciation to NHS staff across the region, Cadbury Easter products were donated to Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital, Birmingham Women’s Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, The Priory Hospital, NHS Burton, Hollymoor Ambulance Hub and the Ambulance Centre in Erdington in time for the holiday period. The snacking company also donated treats to care homes and elderly people across the West Midlands including Roxton and Asprey care homes in Sutton Coldfield, Bournville Village Trust and Stirchley Care home. Rosemary Cripps, volunteer coordinator of the Aston & Nechells Trussell Trust Foodbank, said: “It’s no surprise that this period is putting substantial pressure on foodbanks across the country, therefore we’re delighted and really appreciate the support from Mondelēz International at this time, as well as all year round. “Time and again over the past decade, foodbanks across the UK – aided by a generous public who have donated time, food and money – have stepped up to protect people on the lowest incomes in our communities.   • Weoley Castle
    Weoley Castle Weoley Castle is a cherished community site. The ruins are over seven hundred years old and are the remains of a moated medieval manor house that once stood there. It was once protected by its walls but now it is protected by the Castle Keepers. Come rain or shine volunteer Castle Keepers care for the site and do everything from practical maintenance to research and running activities for the local community to enjoy. Thanks to the Castle Keepers visitors can enjoy a whole array of events; making crafts in the community classroom, having a guided tour of the site, and even seeing history brought to life with the annual Living History day. The Castle Keepers have transformed the site and the community’s understanding of Weoley Castle, they are hugely valued by Birmingham Museums Trust. However, volunteering is a two way street and there has to be something in it for the team too. Jo, one of our Castle Keepers says “I enjoy the company, the variety of things that we do and the fact that we are out in the open and doing something valuable” and they certainly are. The research they are doing on mason marks will help historians for years to come, the community benefits hugely from having such a great range of family activities on their door step, and visitors from far and wide can benefit from the impact of the maintenance work as the ruins can be viewed from a viewing platform which is open every day.
