Acknowledgements I was inspired to write about the two print collections while working in the Art Section at the Australian War Memorial. The many striking and varied prints in that collection made me wonder about their place in that museum – it being such a special yet conservative institution in the minds of many Australians. The prints themselves always sustained my interest in the topic, but I was also fortunate to have guidance and assistance from a number of people during my research, and to make new friends. Firstly, I would like to say thank you to my supervisors: Dr Peter Londey who gave such helpful advice on all my chapters, and who saw me through the final year of the PhD; Dr Kylie Message who guided and supported me for the bulk of the project; Dr Caroline Turner who gave excellent feedback on chapters and my final oral presentation; and also Dr Sarah Scott and Roger Butler who gave good advice from a prints perspective. Biography and Career Exhibitions Exhibition Titles Are Given Where
Biography and career Exhibitions Exhibition titles are given where these are known. Much of the original information is from Peter Bird’s biographical account, which has been added to where more material has come to light. Catalogues, leaflets and pamphlets relating to some of the exhibitions mentioned can be found in the V&A archive: V&A AAD 1997/18. All exhibitions are in the U.K unless otherwise mentioned. One-person exhibitions are mentioned, otherwise references are to group shows, which means that Skiöld, at the most, may have exhibited only 2/3 works each time. In the main catalogue, exhibitions of named works are listed where these are known, based on information in exhibition lists and catalogues.1 Skiöld’s first significant one-person exhibition in the U.K was at the Curwen Gallery in 1968. Education and early career Skiöld was born in Stockholm, 18 March 1923. She came from a wealthy family who were partners in a shipbrokers firm: Skiöld & Lundberg AB. She was the eldest of 4 surviving children and had 2 brothers and one sister. She grew up in Stockholm and Saltsjöbaden, an elegant seaside town, 20km South-East of Stockholm, on the outskirts of which, her family had a country house. She attended the Saltsjöbaden Samskola and went on to study at the Tekniska Skolan, Stockholm (now the Konstfackskolan - University College of Arts, Crafts and Design), enrolling on the 1st September 1942. She attended for 2 years in the Lower School, but did not complete her studies in the Higher School (3 years). -

Handlist 74 UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS THE LIBRARY Archives of the Queen Square and Park Square Galleries, Special Collections MS 712 Part I: Collective exhibitions Mrs Sarah Gilchrist opened her commercial gallery in Queen Square, Leeds, in 1964; the enterprise flourished and she moved it to new premises in Park Square, Leeds, in 1968. She retired in 1978 though the gallery has continued under different aegis. In 1981 she was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Leeds and in the summer of 1984 through the timely intervention of Mr Stephen Chaplin of the University's Department of Fine Art, she most kindly agreed to give the accumulated archive of her galleries up to the date of her retirement to the Brotherton Library. The archive illustrates the relationship between artist and gallery, and between gallery and collector; it also illuminates taste and patronage in Yorkshire in the third quarter of the 20th century. This first part of a complete catalogue refers to collective exhibitions; further parts will deal. with one-man exhibitions, a picture lending scheme and other matters. Each catalogue will have indexes of exhibitors and of correspondents. The Henry Moore Foundation gave us £5,000 to buy work by younger sculptors. This is particularly welcome for two reasons. First, sculpture tends to be relatively speaking Caryl Hubbard Chairman more expensive than painting and hence, with limited funds, we have covered the Philip Pollock Honorary Treasurer field less thoroughly over the past decade. -

PRESS RELEASE JOHN LOKER 82 Kingsland Road SIX DECADES London E2 8DP T: +44 (0)20 7920 7777 18 September - 27 October 2018 [email protected] www.flowersgallery.com Flowers Gallery is delighted to announce a retrospective exhibition by British artist John Loker, marking the occasion of the artist’s 80th birthday.The show coincides with a survey exhibition taking place at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, Bradford, and a new monograph written by Ben Lewis, published by Elephant. Described by Ben Lewis as “one of modern Britain’s most original, free-thinking and category-defying artists”, Loker has produced works of art across many different media in the past six decades. The exhibition explores Loker’s stylistically-varied approach to image-making, from minimal painting and photography in the 1970s to expressive gestural paintings from the 1990s to the present day, sculptural constructions, and works on paper from across his career. The exhibition begins with an example of Loker’s Blue Cathedral, 1988, Oil on canvas, 300 x 351 cm early semi-abstract paintings from the 1960s, fusing elements of Pop Art and the crisp shapes of hard-edge abstraction. Loker’s initial explorations of colour, shape and form took a new direction with a series of collages, photographs, paintings, and fibreglass wall-mounted constructions entitled Horizons, (exhibited at the ICA in 1970), which centred around the perception of space, focusing on objects in the distance as though seen on the horizon. Works on view include the wall-mounted fibreglass and resin Two Section Horizontal (1969); and the painting Six Horizons I (1972), which demonstrates Loker’s minimal approach to colour and shape during this period. -

POWER 1950 to 1990 Ian S McIntyre A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS THE UNIVERSITY OF EAST ANGLIA September 2008 2 Abstract Ian S McIntyre 2008 JUDGEMENT BY EYE The art collecting life of E J Power The thesis examines the pattern of art collecting of E J Power, the leading British patron of contemporary painting and sculpture in the period after the Second World War from 1950 to the 1970s. The dissertation draws attention to Power’s unusual method of collecting which was characterised by his buying of work in quantity, considering it in depth and at leisure in his own home, and only then deciding on what to keep or discard. Because of the auto-didactic nature of his education in contemporary art, Power acquired work from a wide cross section of artists and sculptors in order to interrogate the paintings in his own mind. He paid particular attention to the works of Nicolas de Stael, Jean Dubuffet, Asger Jorn, Sam Francis, Barnett Newman, Ellsworth Kelly, Francis Picabia, William Turnbull and Howard Hodgkin. -
