The Bond of Charity
Pastoral aid 2014 The bond of charity Congregation of The Servants of Charity Opera Don Guanella Rome, december 2013 1 Congregation of The Servants of Charity Opera Don Guanella Vicolo Clementi, 41 - 00148 Rome 2 Presentation I would like hereby to introduce the new aid for the pastoral year 2013-2014. Our last General Chapter through Motion # 3 called for an aid on the ‘Bond of charity’, which brings us back to the Founder, who regarded the “Bond of charity” as a specific feature of his new Congregation: “We are united with each other principally by ‘the bond of charity’ intended by the Founder to be the life of God poured forth into our hearts by the Spirit, and by the love of individuals who enjoy living and working together. This bond is the strength of the Institute and the source of its progress and perfection” (SC Constitutions, 12). Our Constitutions also highlight fraternal communion as one of the most precious values of our vocation (C. 17). Fostering the right conditions for mutual edification and a dialogue that goes beyond differences of age and culture is therefore an important priority in our communities. This aid, which draws abundantly from Fr. Guanella’s own words, encourages us to set our sights high, to the point of making us feel that we could not live this important aspect of our charism if we looked only at our weaknesses and the difficult situations in our communities. However, we must always have lofty ideals in life, as an incentive and invitation to walk without ever giving up. -

To be aware of our own situation, I would like to compare present data of our own Congregation with the data presented in June 30, 1964, at the X General Chapter. More or less we are still in the same situation, the same number shown 45 years ago. There is a noteworthy difference regarding the average age of the perpetual confreres that I do not want to mention here in order not to be put ourselves into a situation of discouragement.. -
St. Joseph – Spouse of the Mother of God
St. Joseph – Spouse of the Mother of God Deacon David Ochoa August 18, 2020 1 Opening Prayer Prayer of St. Francis de Sales to St. Joseph Glorious St Joseph, spouse of Mary, grant us thy paternal protection, we beseech thee by the heart of Jesus Christ. O thou, whose power extends to all our necessities and can render possible for us the most impossible things, open thy fatherly eyes to the needs of thy children. In the trouble and distress which afflicts us, we confidently have recourse to thee. Deign to take under your charitable charge this important and difficult matter, cause of our worries. Make its happy outcome be for God’s glory and for the good of His devoted servants. The 2020–2021 academic year has been challenging. We went from celebrating a national championship in January to the chaos and uncertainty of a pandemic in March. Half of the way through the spring semester, our faculty and students left campus and transitioned to 100% online classes. Our machine shop transitioned from fabricating research equipment to making face masks and medical equipment. It was a remarkable transformation, and I will be eternally grateful to everyone who made it work. Over the summer, we prepared for a safe reopening of classes this fall and reopened our research laboratories at a reduced density. Our classrooms are occupied at about half of their normal capacity. Undergraduate laboratories are also running at about half of the typical capacity. Most faculty work from home, except when they need to be on campus. Our staff uses a staggered schedule, and everyone wears a mask all the time. -

During his Rectorate the Salesians grew from 1030 members in 64 houses to 4420 confreres scattered across the globe. These letters offer the reader a glimpse of the character of their writer and of the pastoral care he took of a small group of relatively insignificant Salesians in what was very often the inhospitable atmosphere of the British Empire at the height of its power. -
