Wadebridge Primary Academy Gonvena Hill, Wadebridge, Cornwall, PL27 6BL Tel: 01208 814560 www.wadebridgeprimary.co.uk [email protected] WPA Family Forum Thursday 14th March 2019 Agenda 1) Welcome and updates from previous meeting / AOB 2) Main discussion points: Sporting and Music opportunities for Children at WPA 3) Agree date of next meeting. Minutes Present: Dr Latham, Mrs Preston, Mr Hannah, Mrs Lee-Elkins, Mr Pope, Mrs Luxton, Mrs Delourme, Mrs Bass, Mrs Rowe, Mrs Lawton, Mrs D'Souza, Mrs Pool Mrs Harvey Apologies: Mrs Cooksley, Mrs Pascoe, Mrs Hawkey, Mrs Jackson, Miss Martin, Mrs Cartwright 1) Welcome/updates - AOB Healthy Schools: Miss Lake is leading on Healthy Schools and has met with Cornwall Healthy Schools team. We are looking to renew the Healthy Schools award and gain the sugar-smart award. This will link directly to the discussion from the previous meeting re sweets. Sugar smart suggest alternatives to sweets given out at birthdays. Supported by the healthy schools team, the student council will send out a questionnaire to parents, hopefully before Easter. Sweets are no longer to be used as treats in school. School canteen menu is also being reviewed by the Cornwall Healthy Schools team to enhance the standard and quality of meals. Snacks – discussed a possible half-termly healthy snack tuck shop. Toilets: It was agreed that toilets are showing their age! Toilets had a deep clean during half term and we are having more regular deep cleans of toilets. We are also currently having a cleaning review every two weeks from the Trust site manager to monitor. Toilet refurbishment has been discussed at Governors meetings and has therefore gone to Trust board level too. The school continues to ask for toilet refurbishment and minutes of this forum will now support this further. A jumper costs £14.50, a cardigan £15.50. School have contacted Wovina who informed the school that they are conducting a quality check. Wovina are currently reviewing samples from other manufacturers and will then share with the school. Individual complaints should be sent to Wovina. School will advise parents/carers in this week’s newsletter about contacting Wovina directly if they have any issues. Some parents asked whether we could have sweatshirts. School said they could review clothing companies and styles in consultation with parents. Swimming: Currently, years R, 2, 4 and 6 go swimming whereas previously every year group went swimming. School accepted that this hadn’t been communicated to parents. There is a statutory obligation for children to be able to swim 25m at the end of Key Stage 2. Some schools only take the children who cannot swim in Y6. School did not decide to do this. Swimming in the past had been a luxury – all children attending for free. As a result of the current financial situation, school could no longer fund free swimming. School has to pay for pool hire and swimming coach but does not have to fund travel! School introduced a voluntary contribution of £15 - £2.75 per lesson. This is currently running at a loss. Cost for YR and Y2 swimming will be higher as both the main and learner pool have to be hired. School will review the position in the summer term. It was suggested that FOWPA could support with swimming costs. Agreed that it would be useful to have a letter at the start of each school year highlighting the financial costs for the year ahead: residentials, school trips, swimming etc. Flu vaccinations: School has met with NHS Kernow to discuss ways of raising awareness of the flu vaccination to improve the take-up. Only 37% uptake at school this year. This was down on last year – possible causes include online administration, lack of reminders to apply, parent choice. Parking: Please do not park in the stop and drop - it is not a parking area! Please do not park in front of spaces! Don’t do it! Reminder in tomorrow’s newsletter. Whilst school supported individual children attending they had not entered for a couple of years following some unpleasant experiences for large groups of children. School said they could review this for future years – possibility of entering the public speaking events too.
