  • Conley, Back on Track, Competes in Strong Field at Stanford Invitational 10,000M by Mark Winitz Following an Extended Injury
Conley, Back on Track, Competes in Strong Field at Stanford Invitational 10,000m By Mark Winitz Following an extended injury cycle in 2017 and 2018, USATF Pacific’s Kim Conley (Sacramento, Calif.) is back on the track, eager for a comeback year in 2019. On March 29, 2019 the two-time U.S. Olympian at 5,000 meters kicked off her track season at the Stanford Invitational, competing in a strong field that lined up for the featured event of the day—the women’s 10,000-meter invitational. The favored contenders were Molly Huddle and Emily Sisson. Huddle set the current U.S. women’s 10,000-meter record of 30:13.17 at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio where she placed sixth. She won the women’s U.S. 10,000m title in June 2018 for the fourth straight time. Huddle also holds multiple U.S. records on the roads. Until today, Sisson held a 10,000m PR of 31:24.64 which she recorded in Sacramento in 2017. Conley scored her 31:35.88 PR on Stanford’s track in 2017. Early in this year’s Stanford Invitational women’s 10,000-meter race that featured over 30 strong competitors Conley settled into third place behind leaders Sisson and Huddle. Still climbing back into full form, Conley struggled to keep up the brisk pace. Sisson and Huddle eventually placed 1-2, crossing the finish 1-2 in 30:49.57 (meet record) and 30:58.46 respectively. Both marks are under the women’s 31:50 qualifying standard for the 2019 World Track & Field Championships in Doha, Qatar.

(Photo: @TaFPhoto) Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel, and Sally Kipyego earn spots on the U.S. Olympic marathon team 1 On Saturday in Atlanta, Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel, and Sally Kipyego ran their way onto the Olympic Team by going 1–2–3 in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. I thought Sarah Lorge Butler put it perfectly in this article for Runner’s World, when she called the top three “completely unexpected and utterly logical at the same time.” I still think Seidel making the team is slightly illogical, but I’ll explain later. There were so many excellent marathoners in contention, it was inevitable that some excellent runners would be left off the team. But for Jordan Hasay, Sara Hall, Emily Sisson, Molly Huddle, Des Linden, and Kellyn Taylor to all be left off, that’s the surprise. How it went down The race went out slowly, relatively speaking, with most of the 444 starters right together through the first mile, which the leaders hit in 6:13. The biggest development in the first mile, as far as I know, is that Kaitlin Goodman went down and got trampled. She got back in the race, but her injuries ultimately took her out of the race shortly before halfway, and it’s frustrating that she never got to test her fitness on this stage.

  • — Berlin Marathon: World Record for Kipsang —
Volume 12, No. 57 September 30, 2013 — Berlin Marathon: World Record For Kipsang — by Sean Hartnett Berlin, Germany; September 29— The 40th BMW Berlin Marathon began with a celebration of the 7 runners who had previously achieved World Records over the city’s über- quick route. Wilson Kipsang joined this illus- trious club as the lanky Kenyan hit autobahn speed over the final 2.2 ki- lometers to drop the all-time best to a stunning 2:03:23. (Technically, Geof- frey Mutai is the “fastest” ever with his aided-course 2:03:02 from Boston ’11). “I am feeling very happy as the World Record holder in the mara- thon,” Kipsang admitted. “I’m the man now.” With this win and record, the 31-year-old Kipsang also became the first to run under 2:04 twice as he now possesses the event’s Nos. 1 & 3 clockings, bracketing Patrick Makau’s vanquished record of 2:03:38. Runner-up Eliud Kipchoge (2:04:05) also jumped high in the all- time rankings as his second marathon effort moved him to No. 4 ever, with the No. 5 performance. And he be- came the fastest non-winner ever. The record chase was on from the start, as would be expected, with for- mer recordsetter Haile Gebrselassie pulling the gun’s trigger. Dashing off into the still cool air the lead pack blasted a 2:47 opening kilometer before settling into a crisp tempo over a 61:34 opening half (see p. 563 for a complete charting of Kip- sang’s kilos).

  • Annual Report for the Cross Country Council Just As the U.S
Cross Country Council I always find it “interesting” to be writing my annual report for the Cross Country Council just as the U.S. national and international scene is starting each year. The 2009 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships were hosted by the Kentucky Track & Cross Country Coaches Association at Masterson Station Park on December 12 and featured over 1000 entrants (and over 900 finishers) and more than 100 scoring teams from across the United States vying for top honors, bragging rights as the nation’s top cross country team, and $30,000 in prize money. Zap Fitness (Blowing Rock, NC) won the open men’s team title, while the Boulder Running Company/adidas successfully defended their open women’s team title; David Jankowski and Serena Burla took home the individual titles. Tracy Lokken and Laura Haefeli were fastest in their respective Masters races, while Peter Magill and Carmen Ayala-Troncoso were the top age-graded Masters. The Spokane Regional Sports Commission hosted the 2010 USA Cross Country Championships/US World Cross Country Team Trials at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane Valley, WA. The event featured athletes competing for national titles in six championship races, $40,000 in prize money, and berths on the Team USA Squad that would compete the following month at the IAAF World Championships. Dathan Ritzenhein won the senior men’s race for the third time in his illustrious career, while Shalane Flanagan ran away from the rest of the country to win the senior women’s event for her fourth time. Trevor Dunbar won the junior men’s title while Shelby Greaney ran away with her first junior women’s title.
