Auf dem Foto trägt John Entwistle lässig eine Jacke über der Schulter, die aus einem Union Jack gefertigt wurde. Heutzutage findet man dieses Symbol auf Kaffeetassen, Kissenbezügen, T-Shirts und diversen anderen Kleidungsstücken. Aber im Dezember 1965, als My Generation herauskam, weigerten sich die meisten Schneider auf der Savile Row, den Union Jack in eine Jacke umzunähen. “Sie dachten, sie kämen dafür ins Gefängnis”, erzählte Roger Daltrey. Die abweisende Attitüde von The Who und die dreiste Verwendung der Nationalflagge waren die beste Werbung für My Generation, die man sich vorstellen konnte. Das Album klingt, wie es aussieht: kurz angebunden, auf Konfrontation aus und voller jungendlichem Zorn und Energie. Da überrascht es kaum, dass der Entstehungsprozess von Konflikten durchzogen war. My Generation war das Ergebnis eines mentalen Armdrückens – zwischen mutigen, neuen Ideen und Popmusiktradition. Als die Platte endlich in die Läden kam, war der Union Jack der Band zerrissen und blutverschmiert – als hätte er zwei Weltkriege mitgemacht. Das Album wurde von Shel Talmy produziert und die Erstveröffentlichung in Großbritannien im Dezember 1965 lief über Brunswick Records. In den USA kam es im April 1966 mit dem Titel ‘The Who Sings My Generation’ heraus. Auf der britischen Version findet sich das legendäre, von Decca Records Fotograf David Wedgbury in den Surrey Docks im Südosten London gemachte Foto, auf dem die vier Musiker alle in die über ihnen befindliche Linse schauen – eine Pose, die auch Jahre später noch von vielen Bands kopiert wurde. -

MUSIC 262: Art/Prog Rock [Brian Ward demonstrates a tune on piano] [Brian Ward]: So around this time in rock and roll we really start to see a lot of fragmentation going on, and that’s reflected in this course. The way we have this designed is so that we can go in different directions with the music, and that’s what the music did all sort of at the same time. One of the directions is what we now call art rock and also progressive rock. Now art rock and progressive rock are terms that are used loosely. A good way to describe it is art rock is rock and roll that is influenced by classical music while progressive rock is more influenced by jazz, so- but you have different elements in varying degrees of influence and in different ways. A good illustration of that is one of the first bands that I want to talk about is The Who. Now The Who were definitely a straight down the line rock and roll band, and they started like a lot of these other British bands: imitating the blues and rhythm and blues music from the United States, but The Who were very unique. They had probably the most four individualized members of any band of all time. All four members of the band, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, were all very, very different people coming from different backgrounds, and that reflected in their music, and they used that to their advantage quite a bit. But with The Who I think rock star first becoming an art form in the sense that they had longer forms and they used many structures that eventually became mini-operas and they eventually made a rock opera called “Tommy.” Now when they started out they were more on the cutting edge of hard rock. -

[1] The formation of large impact basins (diameter D ≥ 300 km) was an important process in the early geological evolution of Mercury and influenced the planet’s topography, stratigraphy, and crustal structure. We catalog and characterize this basin population on Mercury from global observations by the MESSENGER spacecraft, and we use the new data to evaluate basins suggested on the basis of the Mariner 10 flybys. Forty-six certain or probable impact basins are recognized; a few additional basins that may have been degraded to the point of ambiguity are plausible on the basis of new data but are classified as uncertain. The spatial density of large basins (D ≥ 500 km) on Mercury is lower than that on the Moon. Morphological characteristics of basins on Mercury suggest that on average they are more degraded than lunar basins. These observations are consistent with more efficient modification, degradation, and obliteration of the largest basins on Mercury than on the Moon. This distinction may be a result of differences in the basin formation process (producing fewer rings), relaxation of topography after basin formation (subduing relief), or rates of volcanism (burying basin rings and interiors) during the period of heavy bombardment on Mercury from those on the Moon. -

MODERN YOSEMITE CLIMBING 219 MODERN YOSEMITE CLIMBING BY YVON CHOUINARD (Four illustrations: nos. 48-5r) • OSEMITE climbing is the least known and understood, yet one of the most important, schools of rock climbing in the world today. Its philosophies, equipment and techniques have been developed almost independently of the rest of the climbing world. In the short period of thirty years, it has achieved a standard of safety, difficulty and technique comparable to the best European schools. Climbers throughout the world have recently been expressing interest in Yosemit e and its climbs, although they know little about it. Until recently, even most American climbers were unaware of what was happening in their own country. Y osemite climbers in the past had rarely left the Valley to climb in other areas, and conversely few climbers from other regions ever come to Yosemite; also, very little has ever been published about this area. Climb after climb, each as important as a new climb done elsewhere, has gone completely unrecorded. One of the greatest rock climbs ever done, the 1961 ascent of the Salethe Wall, received four sentences in the American Alpine Journal. Just why is Y osemite climbing so different? Why does it have techniques, ethics and equipment all of its own ? The basic reason lies in the nature of the rock itself. Nowhere else in the world is the rock so exfoliated, so glacier-polished and so devoid of handholds. All of the climbing lines follow vertical crack systems. Nearly every piton crack, every handhold, is a vertical one. Special techniques and equipment have evolved through absolute necessity. -

Yvon Chouinard – Biography Yvon Chouinard is founder and owner of Patagonia, Inc., based in Ventura, California. He began in business by designing, manufacturing, and distributing rock climbing equipment in the late 1950’s. His tinkering led to an improved ice axe that facilitated the French ice climbing technique and is the basis for modern ice axe design. In 1964 he produced his first mail order catalog, a one page mimeographed sheet containing advice not to expect fast delivery during climbing season. Business grew slowly until 1972 when Yvon added rugby shirts to his catalog and his clothing business took off. In the late 1980’s, Patagonia’s success was such that Yvon considered early retirement. In some ways he would have preferred to disappear into the South Pacific with his fly rod and surfboard. However, he decided to continue directing Patagonia’s course, in part to use the company to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis. As part of this goal, Patagonia instituted an Earth Tax, pledging 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. In 2001, Yvon, along with Craig Mathews, owner of West Yellowstone’s Blue Ribbon Flies, started One Percent For The Planet, an alliance of businesses that contribute at least 1 percent of their net annual sales to groups on a list of researched and approved environmental organizations. Yvon spends much of his time in the outdoors and serving on the boards of numerous environmental groups. “I work every day of my life. My job is to be the ‘outside’ man, studying lifestyles around the world, coming up with ideas for new products, new market trends, seeing that Patagonia stays relevant in a rapidly changing world.” A bit of history: California, 1957: Yvon Chouinard, a young American from a French Canadian family decided to make his own climbing equipment as he couldn’t find pitons he liked.
