The creator and producer of the multiple Emmy® and Golden Globe®-winning critically acclaimed series The Sopranos, announced today that Everybody Loves Raymond star Brad Garrett will be featured in the director's music-driven story set in 1960's suburbia. James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Bella Heathcote (Beneath Hill 60, Neighbors), Christopher McDonald (Boardwalk Empire, Harry's Law), Molly Price (Bionic Woman, Third Watch) and comedian Lisa Lampanelli also join the film, which is set to begin principal photography in New York. As previously reported, Chase and Gandolfini are re-uniting on this film, after an acclaimed six-year collaboration on The Sopranos. Elaborating on Gandolfini's role, Chase said, "It is so great to be working with Jim again. He is the perfect actor for this part - a postwar, post-Depression era parent who has given his kid every advantage that he didn't have growing up, but now can't help feeling jealous of the liberated, more adventurous destiny his son is able to enjoy." Price will portray the boy's mother in the movie, with Lampanelli playing his Aunt. Christopher McDonald plays the father of his love interest (Bella Heathcote). Chase previously announced that actors John Magaro and Will Brill, as well as Jack Huston, who has been recently receiving acclaim for his role as Richard Harrow - the man with the shattered face - on HBO's Golden Globe®-winning Boardwalk Empire, will star in the movie, to be released by Paramount Vantage. Chase, who wrote the original script, will produce alongside Oscar®-winning producer Mark Johnson (Rain Man, The Chronicles of Narnia). Movies and television dramas dealing with combat have garnered awards, critical accolades, controversy and box-office success and failure alike. Whether successful or not, “war films” now form a well- known genre. Less explored in film and television, though not entirely ignored, is the idea of what happens to combat veterans after the wars have ended. Yet as early as the 1920s, the silver screen was exploring the complexity of post-combat stress, injury and illness. In his book, Shell Shock Cinema: Weimar Culture and the Wounds of War, Anton Kaes draws the direct connection between the groundbreaking artistry of the cinema in Germany’s post war Weimar Republic and the horrors experienced by many of its brightest directors in the trenches of World War I. “Many of the references that were readily understood by contemporary audiences are lost on us today,” Kaes wrote. “By examining what the films implied but did articulate, by reading ‘what was never written,’ we may be able to apprehend the forces that generated a cinema of shell shock.” Classic works such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Metropolis, though not depicting soldiers in combat, display the signs of war’s aftermath, according to Kaes.     ENTERTAINMENT ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Comes to Harlem By Ericka Blount Danois on September 9, 2013 “One looks down in secret and sees many things,” Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffrey Wright) deadpans, speaking to Chalky White (Michael K. Williams). “You know what I saw? A servant trying to be a king.” And so begins a dance of power, politics and personality between two of the most electrifying, enigmatic actors on the television screen today. Each time the two are on screen—together or apart—they breathed new life into tonight’s premiere episode of Boardwalk Empire season four, with dark humor, slight smiles, powerful glances, smart clothes and killer lines. Entitled “New York Sour,” the episode opened with bombast, unlike the slow boil of previous seasons. Set in 1924, we’re introduced to the tasteful opulence of Chalky White’s new club, The Onyx, decorated with sconces custom-made in Paris and shimmering, shapely dancing girls. Chalky earned an ally, and eventually a partnership to be able to open the club, with former political boss and gangster Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) by saving Nucky’s life last season. This sister club to the legendary Cotton Club in Harlem is Whites-only, but features Black acts. There are some cringe-worthy moments when Chalky, normally proud and infallible, has to deal with racism and bends over to appease his White clientele. But more often, Chalky—a Texas- born force to be reckoned with—breathes an insistent dose of much needed humor into what sometimes devolves into cheap shoot ’em up thrills this season. The meeting of the minds between Narcisse and Chalky takes root in the aftermath of a mistake by Chalky’s right hand man, Dunn Purnsley (Erik LaRay Harvey), who engages in an illicit interracial tryst that turns out to be a dramatic, racially-charged sex game gone horribly wrong.

World War I left more than 8 million soldiers dead and an incomprehensible 21 million wounded, many so mutilated and disfigured they wished for death. Such is the fate of Trumbo’s hero. In his withering indictment of war, Trumbo challenges you to feel, almost unbearably so, the terror of slowly realizing you have no hearing, sight, limbs—or face. This feeling came back to me recently while (finally) watching the first season of “Boardwalk Empire,” the HBO series (now in its third season) about Prohibition-era gangsters in Atlantic City starring Steve Buscemi. Home » The Commentary 20 films on politics and the media 29 December 2009 | Email This Post | Print This Post BY JOSEPH PLANTA VANCOUVER – A few weeks ago, Sean Holman, the talented and prodigious editor of Public Eye Online was on the program to discuss the year that was and the year to come in provincial politics. We got to talking movies, when I’d asked him if he’d seen State of Play, the fine American film based on the British miniseries of the same name. He suggested two other films: The Candidate and Shattered Glass. This got me thinking about what films had the best depictions of politics, media, journalism and the writing process. I came up with a few, and limited myself to twenty which seemed a workable number. Twenty favourites, as it were. Of course the list is subjective, and is in no particular order. I suspect if I ever get to watching Dr. Strangelove, or The Front Page, or Bob Roberts, or Silver City, they might be added to the list, perhaps even bumping off something already here. There’s nothing on this list that was made for television, otherwise the House of Cards trilogy would be here, as well as the original British miniseries State of Play, The Thick of It, The West Wing, and of course, the Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister tandem. Perhaps Mr. Holman or others would like to add to or debate my choices.
