LONG NOTES GEORGE WINSTON LINUS AND LUCY – THE MUSIC OF VINCE GUARALDI – VOL. 1: George Winston on Vince Guaraldi (Vince’s name is pronounced “Gurr-al-dee”, beginning with a hard “G) “Vince Guaraldi once said that he wanted to write standards, not just hits, and that he did,” says George Winston. “His music is very much a part of the fabric of American culture, but not many people know the man behind the music, and it is unusual for someone’s music to be better known than their name (some other composers who have also been in this situation are Allen Toussaint, Randy Newman (in the early and mid 1960s), Joni Mitchell (in the mid 1960s), Leonard Cohen (in the mid-1960s), Laura Nyro, Percy Mayfield, Otis Blackwell, and Wendy Waldman). If I play Linus & Lucy and other Vince Guaraldi Peanuts pieces for most kids they will usually say right away, ‘That’s Charlie Brown music’. Vince’s soundtracks for the first 16 of the Peanuts animations from the 1960s & 1970s continue to delight millions of people around the world, and many of his albums remain in print. I like to help make the connection for people that Vince Guaraldi was a great jazz pianist, and that he was the composer of the soundtracks for the first 16 of the Peanuts animation, as well as of many other great jazz pieces. Vince’s best known standards are Cast Your Fate to the Wind, Linus and Lucy, Christmas Time is Here, as well as Skating, and Christmas is Coming. A lot of Vince’s music is seasonal, and it reminds me very much of my upbringing in Montana.

Love Will Come – new long web notes: There are three composers that I have at one time or another tried to play all of their songs: New Orleans R&B pianist Professor Longhair, The Doors, and Vince Guaraldi...Vince Guaraldi and his music are so much a part of the deep heart and soul of San Francisco, and of the experience of childhood, and beyond.” — George Winston In 1996, George released his first album of Guaraldi compositions, entitled LINUS AND LUCY - THE MUSIC OF VINCE GUARALDI. It nicely mixed well known-standards like the title track and Cast Your Fate to the Wind, with less well-known material, including some music cues that had only been heard in the soundtracks. George’s second album of Guaraldi music delves even deeper into the repertoire, uncovering some hidden gems. Like many musicians of his generation, George Winston first heard the music of San Francisco based jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi on his 1962 hit Cast Your Fate to the Wind, and on the 1965 televised Peanuts® animation special A Charlie Brown Christmas. First aired on the CBS network in 1965, the television special was created by the Peanuts® comic strip creator Charles Schulz (1922-2000), writer/producer Lee Mendelson (1933-2019), and former Warner Brothers animator Bill Melendez (1916-2008). Vince Guaraldi was hired to compose the jazz soundtrack, a bold step for network television at that time. Vince completed the diamond that was the Dream Team. At first, some executives at CBS weren’t fully on board about using jazz for the music soundtrack.

Audience Participation Guide Gather around a viewing device of your choice and interact with “A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS”! To play you will need: Hats Can or cup Crumpled up paper or cotton balls Ornament Blanket Snacks Coin Flashlight Once you have all of these items, it’s time to celebrate the holiday season along with the Peanuts gang! RECURRING ACTIONS: • Put a hat on top of your TV screen at the beginning of “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. If a character is lined up with the hat, stand up and do a Peanuts Dance! • You can also put different colored hats across the top of the TV and assign each person you’re watching with a different color. Text in parentheses is to be shouted in unison with the videotape. Whenever Charlie Brown appears, or especially, is introduced the line “Blockhead” is appropriate. With more discretion, the line “Fussbudget” is appropriate to Lucy. A Note about A & B The A & B call and response lines are similar to the front row/back row lines at RHPS. It works best to divide the guests into A’s and B’s before showing the X- mas special. 1 And now a word from Pee Wee Herman: “Today’s secret word is – Conky, if you please…thanks. The secret word is: ‘GOOD GRIEF!’” Thanks Pee Wee. You all know what to do if you hear the secret word…SCREAM!! A Word about “Rats!” The proper reaction to a character saying “Rats” was given to us by Mammy-Two Shoes (voice of Lilian Randolph) in the Tom and Jerry Cartoons. “Skirts” (figurative and literal) should be hiked up. Feet stomp around in a little dance. (You can do this sitting in your seat.) And screaming things like “EEEEE!” “A rat!” “Save me!” “Help” Shoo! Shoo!” Etc… A Note about the “Charlie Browniest” The hazing of Virgins is an essential part of the Rocky Horror experience and “A Rocky Horror X-mas” is no different.

Schulz • Based on the television special by Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson Stage Adaptation by Eric Schaeffer • By Special Arrangement with Arthur Whitelaw and Ruby Persson Directed by Laurie Larson Monday & Tuesday, October 24 th & 25 th ● 6:00pm - 7:30pm at the Spa Little Theater, Saratoga Spa State Park The classic television special comes to life in this faithful adaptation where the Peanuts gang grapples with the real meaning of Christmas. In order to get him into the spirit of Christmas, Lucy convinces Charlie Brown to direct the school’s Christmas play. Little does he know he is about to guide his undisciplined and uncooperative friends, Lucy, Linus, Pig Pen, Sally, Schroeder, Snoopy and the bunch to an understanding of what the holiday is all about. (Over) Character Breakdown – Looking for actors between the ages of 20-45 than can blend into a believable ensemble. Some actors may be asked to sing. Roller-skating is a plus, especially for Snoopy. CHARLIE BROWN: The lovable loser and the kid that never gives up, even though he gets grief from his friends and his dog he remains the stalwart hero. SNOOPY: Supremely confident world famous beagle is a canine that can do anything. Roller-skating ability a plus. Must move well. WOODSTOCK: The fluttery sputtering yellow bird is Snoopy’s sidekick. It is a physical role without lines. LUCY: The bossy, crabby, self-appointed Queen of the Christmas pageant and sister to Linus.
