    Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 735-745 Research Article Jyoti Atwal* Embodiment of Untouchability: Cinematic Representations of the “Low” Caste Women in India https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0066 Received May 3, 2018; accepted December 7, 2018 Abstract: Ironically, feudal relations and embedded caste based gender exploitation remained intact in a free and democratic India in the post-1947 period. I argue that subaltern is not a static category in India. This article takes up three different kinds of genre/representations of “low” caste women in Indian cinema to underline the significance of evolving new methodologies to understand Black (“low” caste) feminism in India. In terms of national significance, Acchyut Kanya represents the ambitious liberal reformist State that saw its culmination in the constitution of India where inclusion and equality were promised to all. The movie Ankur represents the failure of the state to live up to the postcolonial promise of equality and development for all. The third movie, Bandit Queen represents feminine anger of the violated body of a “low” caste woman in rural India. From a dacoit, Phoolan transforms into a constitutionalist to speak about social justice. This indicates faith in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s India and in the struggle for legal rights rather than armed insurrection. The main challenge of writing “low” caste women’s histories is that in the Indian feminist circles, the discourse slides into salvaging the pain rather than exploring and studying anger.     Race Against Memory: Katherine Mayo, Jabez Sunderland, and Indian Independence Paul Teed A major event in the American debate over India's independence was the 1927 publication of Mother India, an explicitly pro-imperialist book by conservative Pennsylvania journalist Katherine Mayo. In the controversy over her book that ensued, American intellectuals struggled to understand India's culture, history, and national liberation movement in light of their nation's own historic experiences with revolution, nation building and civil war. Fawning in its support of British rule, and extravagantly critical of India's social practices, Mayo's book denied any analogy between India's quest for independence and America's own revolutionary past. Indeed, Mayo's engagement with India rested firmly upon a racially exclusive reading of American traditions that reflected deep contemporary concerns about America's role in the Philippines, immigration to the United States, and other domestic conditions. Responding to Mayo in his best-known work India in Bondage, Unitarian minister and long-time pro-India activist Jabez Sunderland sought not only to rehabilitate Indian culture in the wake of Mayo's attacks but also to position the mirror of American history to reflect more positively India's struggle for independence. Psychoanalytic jurisprudence attempts to understand the images used by law to attract and capture the subject. In keeping with the larger psychoanalytic tradition, such theories tend to overemphasise the paternal principle. The image of law is said to be the image of the paterfamilias – the biological father, the sovereign, or God. In contrast to such theories, I would like to introduce the image of the mother and analyse its impact on the subject’s relation to law. For this purpose, I examine the history and use of the figure of Bharat Mata or Mother India and how it influences the Indian subject’s relation to law. When the subject is torn between his loyalties to the lawmaker–as–father and the nation–as–mother, who does he side with? Eschewing Greek myths and the Oedipus complex, I focus instead on Hindu mythology and the notion of an oedipal alliance to understand legal subjectivity in India. Lastly, I analyse a defining Indian political trial, the Gandhi Murder Trial, in which all these notions come to play and the accused justifies his decision to murder the father of the nation in the name of the motherland.

    Sacred Identities: The Politicization of Gender and the Indian Struggle for Independence The Indian independence and nationalist movements which began at approximately the turn of the twentieth century and ended in 1947 revealed the importance of gender identity in politics as they appeared in concepts of dignity, honor, and sexual expectations for both men and women. These values and expectations were discussed in the discourses of important Indian nationalist leaders, including Gandhi himself, as well as the literature of some popular movements with a comparatively minimal impact on the success of the independence movements, such as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh party and other Hindu revivalist organizations. The Swadeshi movement in particular politicized gender with its use of a nationalistically symbolic feminine deity. Prescribed gender roles were not something new in India since they are outlined in Hindu religious texts as sacramental practices.[1] However, they were not necessarily critically important as political issues until they were made so by British propaganda, which used specific issues that pertained to Indian gender as a way to justify the Raj.[2] British imperial propaganda attacked the masculinity of Indian men as well as the dignity of Indian women. These gender themes reappeared in different forms throughout the Indian independence movements, and eventually became direct symbols for nationalism and national dignity, particularly among the Hindu majority.[3] While gender issues may have entered political discourse many times in history, the issue of Indian gendered politics during the period of mass independence movements and immediately following is a particularly useful era to study because very tangible consequences were shown immediately after Indian independence, during the communal violence of the Partition.

He is Chairman of Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) – an international body of overseas Indians. He was president of GOPIO from 2004-2009, president of National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA) from 1988-92 and was the founding president of Federation of Indian Associations in Southern California. He can be reached at indersingh- [email protected]. Congressman Dalip Singh Saund was the first Asian American and also the first among Indian Americans to be elected to the US Congress. Up until 2004, he was the only Indian American who had held highly visible elected position as a Congressman. To-date, he has the distinction as the only Sikh American who held that office. He was first elected in 1956 from 29th Congressional District comprising of Riverside and Imperial Counties of California. He was re-elected twice, in 1958 and 1960. While campaigning for a fourth term in 1962, he suffered a debilitating stroke and became incapacitated. Although he did not win a fourth term, he did set a precedent for many Asians to follow him in the U.S. Congress. He remains a beacon of hope and an example for many Indian Americans to follow his footsteps. Early Years Dalip Singh Saund was born on September 20, 1899 in village Chhajalwadi, Amritsar, Punjab. He grew up in a joint family, with seven children, four boys and three girls.

    ABSTRACT British Women’s Views of Twentieth-Century India: An Examination of Obstacles to Cross-Cultural Understandings by Dharitri Bhattacharjee Many British women went to India during the nineteenth and twentieth century. They were either part of the imperial community or they were activities, reformers, doctors and missionaries and worked outside the imperial hierarchy. The stories that they left behind of their experiences in India are fascinating. This thesis will focus on five twentieth- century British women in India and create an image of India through their writings. The British women’s interest in India benefited India in many ways but their interaction with Indians also portrayed a complicated story of cross-cultural interactions and the limitations they faced in reaching out to India and Indians. This thesis will also endeavor to examine the nature of limitations to cross-cultural interactions and if at all they can be circumvented, and if so, how.
