    ELIZABETH OF THE TRINITY (Elizabeth Catez, 1880-1906) Servant of God (D) Born in .the military camp of Arvor, near Bourges, on Aug. 18, 1880, Elizabeth enjoyed an adolescence and young womanhood filled with the sense of God and with zeal for the salvation of souls. While still an adolescent, she made a vow of chastity and offered herself as a victim to God for France. In 1901 she entered the Carmel at Dijon, to which her family had transferred. On Dec. 8 of the same year she received the habit and on Jan. 11, 1903, she made her profession. Struck by a stomach ulcer, she died on Nov. 9, 1906. The ordinary processes were held during the years 1931-41. On Jan. 28, 1944, her writings were approved, and on Oct. 25, 1961, Pope John XXIII approved the commission for the introduction of her cause (AAS, LVI /1964/, pp. 535-37). The apostolic processes took place from 1963 till 1965. The servant of God is one of the best-known figures of contemporary spirituality. By her example and by her doctrine she has for some years exercised an ever-increasing influence, due above all to her experience of the Trinity and to her brief writings (spiritual notes, correspondence). The writings are heavily doctrinal and echo her communion with the three Divine Persons. Humble and pure, enriched with an intelligence open to all the beauties of grace, of nature and of art, she learned the lesson of love for «the Three»—according to a favorite expression of hers — in the school of St.

In his providence Christ conceals them in a hidden place that they may not shine before others when they might wish to do so. Yet they are always ready to exchange the quiet of contemplation for the works of mercy as soon as they perceive in their heart the invitation of Christ." (Taken from sermon notes, St. Anthony of Padua) St. Anthony of Padua’s words describe the lives of these two contemporary women impelled to enter the cloister because they understood so deeply the meaning of the kingdom within; they were captives of the Divine Captive, the Indwelling Triune God, and knew that all else, as St. Paul would say, is rubbish. They understood the primacy of prayer and the interior life--that all real life is within--and that there can be no apostolate ordained by God that is not first rooted in a life of contemplation and the seeking of God’s Will above all else. There must be some cloister, some sacred space, in every life and in every heart that is the dwelling place of God alone, where He is the Spiritual Director, the One Who calls and the One Who fulfills, the One Who is served. Otherwise, we are in danger of seeking our own will and our own glory. Both Sister Mildred (Mary Ephrem) Neuzil, visionary for the Our Lady of America® message, the central doctrine of which is the Divine Indwelling, and Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity, whose life and spirituality were centered in the Divine Indwelling, spoke of living their lives as a Laudem gloriae, a praise of glory, God’s glory, the Trinity.

Hence the inner dynamism of the formative process of biblical texts is that human beings saw their life experiences in and through God, and God or his representative voices revealed himself or his values through the life experiences of human beings. So, every act of interpretation of a biblical text is also an act of interpretation of the life of the interpreter. In other words, interpretation process must take the communicative context neces­ sarily into consideration. In this vein, it has been for me a dream, to develop the hermeneutics for reading Bible from the Carmelite point of view and for reading Carmelite spirituality from biblical point of view and thus to let the new deeper dimensions of both the Biblical texts and the Carmelite Spirituality emerge through intercultura- tion1. In this paper we shall apply this hermeneutical principle to the spirituality of Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity. The procedure is the following. First we shall reflect on the biblical rottenness of Carmelite spirituality. After having made our sketch of the spiritual journey of Elizabeth of the Trinity, we shall expatiate how she is a liv­ ing interpretation of biblical spirituality. Then, the biblical founda­ tions of Elizabethan Spirituality are expounded to substantiate that Elizabeth is the embodiment of realized discipleship.
