This dance, now known as “on 2” mambo, or salsa, for its relationship to the clave, is the first uniquely North American form of vernacular Latino dance on the East Coast. This paper traces the New York mambo’s develop- ment from its beginnings at the Palladium Ballroom through the salsa and hustle years and up to the present time. The current period is characterized by increasing growth, commercialization, codification, and a blending with other modern, urban dance genres such as hip-hop. CHAPTER 4 The Nueva Trova: Frank Delgado and Survival of a Critical Voice Lauren E. Shaw The nueva trova is not a genre or an artistic school. Rather, it is a musical movement that is not characterized by a particular style. As a movement, it belongs more to a certain ideology and way of life than to a certain time period. The musical forms it encompasses are many: bolero, guaguancó, guajira, guaracha, danzón, son and ballad. Some troubadours even include reggae and rap into their repertory. It is the ballad, however, that is used most frequently due to its flexibility of form that can accommodate more adeptly to lyrics. The nueva trova emerged in Cuba at the end of the sixties with singer- songwriters Silvio Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés as its two-main founders. It has come to be associated with the ideological, historical and social-political context of the Cuban Revolution. In fact, in the last few decades, its songs have conveyed the impact of socialism on the island. Although it is part of the world-wide movement of protest songs in the sixties, the nueva trova is unique, due to the political situation in Cuba. Some of the foremost artists taking part in this international song form are: Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez in the United States; Violeta Parra and Víctor Jara in Chile; Mercedes Sosa in Argentina; Oscar Chávez and Amparo Ochoa in México; Roy Brown in Puerto Rico and Joan Manuel Ser- rat, Paco Ibáñez, Luis Llac and Raimón in Spain. Insisting on social justice, these artists strove to raise consciousness and to speak out against oppressive social and political systems. -
Creolizing Contradance in the Caribbean
Peter Manuel 1 / Introduction Contradance and Quadrille Culture in the Caribbean region as linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse as the Carib- bean has never lent itself to being epitomized by a single music or dance A genre, be it rumba or reggae. Nevertheless, in the nineteenth century a set of contradance and quadrille variants flourished so extensively throughout the Caribbean Basin that they enjoyed a kind of predominance, as a common cultural medium through which melodies, rhythms, dance figures, and per- formers all circulated, both between islands and between social groups within a given island. Hence, if the latter twentieth century in the region came to be the age of Afro-Caribbean popular music and dance, the nineteenth century can in many respects be characterized as the era of the contradance and qua- drille. Further, the quadrille retains much vigor in the Caribbean, and many aspects of modern Latin popular dance and music can be traced ultimately to the Cuban contradanza and Puerto Rican danza. Caribbean scholars, recognizing the importance of the contradance and quadrille complex, have produced several erudite studies of some of these genres, especially as flourishing in the Spanish Caribbean. However, these have tended to be narrowly focused in scope, and, even taken collectively, they fail to provide the panregional perspective that is so clearly needed even to comprehend a single genre in its broader context. Further, most of these pub- lications are scattered in diverse obscure and ephemeral journals or consist of limited-edition books that are scarcely available in their country of origin, not to mention elsewhere.1 Some of the most outstanding studies of individual genres or regions display what might seem to be a surprising lack of familiar- ity with relevant publications produced elsewhere, due not to any incuriosity on the part of authors but to the poor dissemination of works within (as well as 2 Peter Manuel outside) the Caribbean. -

Contact: [email protected] CHAPTER Srx Improvisation in Latin Dance Music: History and Style PETER MANUEL Latin dance music constitutes one of the most dynamic and sophisticated urban popular music traditions in the Americas. Improvisation plays an important role in this set of genres, and its styles are sufficiently distinctive, complex, and internally significant as to merit book-length treatment along the lines of Paul Berliner's volume Thinking in Jazz (1994 ). To date, however, the subject of Latin improvisation has received only marginal and cursory analytical treat ment, primarily in recent pedagogical guidebooks and videos. 1 While a single chijpter such as this can hardly do justice to the subject, an attempt will be made here to sketch some aspects of the historical development of Latin im provisational styles, to outline the sorts of improvisation occurring in main stream contemporary Latin music, and to take a more focused look at improvi sational styles of one representative instrument, the piano. An ultimate and only partially realized goal in this study is to hypothesize a unified, coherent aesthetic of Latin improvisation in general. -

I analyze practices of cultural consumption involving records in Medell¶³n,Colombia's second largest city and most important industrial center at the time. The study sheds light on some of the complex connections between two simultaneous historical processes during the mid-twentieth century, mass consumption and socio-political strife. Between 1930 and 1953, Colombian society experienced the rise of mass media and mass consumption as well as the outbreak of La Violencia, a turbulent period of social and political strife. Through an analysis of written material, especially the popular press, this work illustrates the use of aesthetic judgments to establish social di®erences in terms of ethnicity, social class, and gender. Another important aspect of the dissertation focuses on the adoption of music gen- res by di®erent groups, not only to demarcate di®erences at the local level, but as a means to inscribe these groups within larger imagined communities. -
