  • Violence in Nigeria : a Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis
Marc-Antoine Pérouse de Montclos (ed.) West African Politics and Society series 3 Violence in Nigeria Violence in Nigeria Violence in Nigeria Most of the academic literature on violence in Nigeria is qualitative. It rarely relies on quantitative data because police crime statistics are not reliable, or not available, or not even published. Moreover, the training of A qualitative and Nigerian social scientists often focuses on qualitative, cultural, and political issues. There is thus quantitative analysis a need to bridge the qualitative and quantitative approaches of conflict studies. This book represents an innovation and fills a gap in this regard. It is the first to introduce a discussion on such issues in a coherent manner, relying on a database that fills the lacunae in A qualitative and quantitative data from the security forces. The authors underline the necessity of a trend analysis to decipher the patterns and the complexity of violence in very different fields: from oil production to cattle breeding, radical Islam to motor accidents, land conflicts to witchcraft, and so on. In addition, analysis they argue for empirical investigation and a complementary approach using both qualitative and quantitative data. The book is therefore organized into two parts, with a focus first on statistical Marc-Antoine studies, then on fieldwork. Pérouse de Montclos (ed.) M. Agaie, A. Salisu and A. A. Ebbo* Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, P.M.B 2346, Nigeria. Accepted 19 December, 2006 Through structured questionnaire, two hundred livestock farmers and veterinary attendants were interviewed on various aspects of poisonous plants in Sokoto State. Forty one (41) poisonous plants were reported to exist in the state. They include Ipomea asarifolia (Duman kada), Sorgum bicolar (Bahuri), Erythrophleum africana (Samberu), Calotropis procera (Tumfafiya) and Mannihot esculenta (Kunnen rogo). Majority of the plants are found in the grassland and are shrubs. Leaves stem and bark are the major parts of the plants that are poisonous when consumed by livestock. Key words: Toxic plants, Livestock, Sokoto, Nigeria. INTRODUCTION Plants comprise the third largest category of poisons systems of management making them susceptible to poi- known around the world. They form a major part of soning by toxic plants. With increasing human activities livestock feed, thus toxicosis in animals consuming these such as construction, farming, deforestation and other plants can be expected. It is also known that poisonous forms of environmental degradation, which affects the plants constitute a major cause of economic loss in fauna and the flora, it becomes very important to re- livestock industry since the days of early settlement assess common poisonous plants found in the state.

He was raised at Chimmola; therein, he moved to a place and created Gwadabawa ribat to protect Sokoto Caliphate. He did many contributions during his stay at Gwadabawa to preserve and consolidate Sokoto Caliphate and succeeded in repelling the Gobirawa, Kabbawa, and Azbinawa forces ravaging the northern region of the Caliphate. He consequently, created Gwadabawa ribat, which is now envisaging Gwdabawa, Tangaza, Gada, Illela, and Gudu local government areas of present Sokoto state. He later ascended the Caliphate’s throne in 1915. His period as Caliph/ Sultan was insulated from the intervention of Turawa in most of the affairs of Sokoto. Therein, he laid the foundation of a new vista to Sokoto Caliphate, by connecting main towns with roads, construction of mosques, the establishment of craft schools, the establishment of council team, and many others. Maiturare family is still holding traditional leadership positions in Sokoto, more especially in the northern part of Gwadabawa. Maiturare passed away in 1924 leaving behind many sons and daughters. He was succeeded in the throne by his son, Muhammadu Tambari. Conclusively, Maiturare was one of the major actors in Sokoto during his lifetime.

    # A. MUNIR & A. E. OLOJO http://www.ifra-nigeria.org/IMG/pdf/violence-related-deaths-sokoto-kebbi-states.pdf A Study of Violence-Related Deaths in Gudu, Gwadabawa, llela Local Government Areas of Sokoto State, and Sakaba Local Government Area Of KebbiKebbi State State (2006-2014) (2006-2014) IFRA-Nigeria working papers series, n°47 16/02/2015 The ‘Invisible Violence’ Project Based in the premises of the French Institute for Research in Africa on the campus of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria Watch is a database project that has monitored fatal incidents and human security in Nigeria since 1 June 2006. The database compiles violent deaths on a daily basis, including fatalities resulting from accidents. It relies on a thorough reading of the Nigerian press (15 dailies & weeklies) and reports from human rights organisations. The two main objectives are to identify dangerous areas and assess the evolution of violence in the country. However, violence is not always reported by the media, especially in remote rural areas that are difficult to access. Hence, in the last 8 years, Nigeria Watch has not recorded any report of fatal incidents in some of the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the Nigerian Federation. There are two possibilities: either these places were very peaceful, or they were not covered by the media. This series of surveys thus investigates ‘invisible’ violence. By 1 November 2014, there were still 23 LGAs with no report of fatal incidents in the Nigeria Watch database: Udung Uko and Urue-Offong/Oruko (Akwa Ibom), Kwaya Kusar (Borno), Nafada (Gombe), Auyo, Gagarawa, Kaugama and Yankwashi (Jigawa), Ingawa and Matazu (Katsina), Sakaba (Kebbi), Bassa, Igalamela- Odolu and Mopa-Muro (Kogi), Toto (Nassarawa), Ifedayo (Osun), Gudu and Gwadabaw (Sokoto), Ussa (Taraba), and Karasuwa, Machina, Nguru and Yunusari (Yobe).

Research Article (DOI: http://doi.org/10.15580/GJGES.2016.2.062716108 ) Geological Site Suitability in Sokoto State, Northwestern Nigeria, for Phosphates Prospecting *Christopher Oche Albert, Alaga Taofeek Abayomi, Ogbole Owoicho John Cooperative Information Network (COPINE), Advanced Space Technology Application Laboratory (ASTAL), National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), P.M.B 022, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. *Corresponding Author’s Email: link2oche @yahoo .com ABSTRACT Sokoto State is in Northwestern Nigeria. Geologically, it represents parts of the south eastern sector of the Iullemmedan basin and it contained important phosphorite deposits. Field study and sampling from the type locality in Sokoto cement industry indicates that the phosphate rock varies in size and colour, occurring in beds and disseminations majorly in the Sokoto Group of sediments. The field data, geology, pedology and elevation data for Sokoto state was reclassified using geospatial analysis to access their suitability for phosphate rock prospecting, ranking from the highly suitable to the highly unsuitable. These data was now incorporated as one for spatial analysis and together with result from geochemical analysis of the phosphates rock was used to produce the suitability map for phosphates rock in Sokoto State.
