We argue that the combination of human and machine curation on media portals marks a new period for news media and journalism. Although intermediary platforms routinely claim that they are merely the neutral technological platform which facilitates news and information flows, rejecting any criticisms that they are operating as de facto media organisations; instead, we argue for an alternative, more active interpretation of their roles. In this article we provide a contemporary account of the South Korean (‘Korean’) online news media ecology as an exemplar of how contemporary media technologies, and in particular portals and algorithmic recommender systems, perform a powerful role in shaping the kind of news and information that citizens access. By highlighting the key stakeholders and their positions within the production, publication and distribution of news media, we argue that the overall impact of the major portal platforms of Naver and Kakao is far more consequential than simply providing an entertaining media diet for consumers.

EdTech wrote about a $2.7 million U.S. Department of Education grant for a digital game project by Daphna Oyserman, Dean’s Professor of Psychology and professor of psychology, education and communication. Oyserman will work with the nonprofit McREL, game developer Filament Games, and the South Centeral Colorado Board of Cooperative Education Services to build and test the game based on Oyserman's "identity-based motivation" for teens. Tuesday, December 22, 2015 The Nation highlighted research by Manuel Pastor, Turpanjian Chair in Civil Society and Social Change and professor of sociology and American studies and ethnicity, and colleagues on the economic impact of Prop. 13 in California. If Prop. 13 was reformed so that commercial and industrial properties were taxed at market rate, the state could generate between $8.2-10.2 billion. Pastor noted that Prop. 13 affects younger Californians - who are predominantly non-white - more than older, more established residents. Daily Mail featured research by Margaret Gatz, professor of psychology, gerontology and preventive medicine, and Andrew Petkus, a postdoctoral researcher in psychology, along with colleagues finding that long-term anxiety can increase the risk for dementia.

    SOUTH KOREA: LIVING THE NEW NORMAL Vol.1 No.1 April 2020 by COVID - 19 SOCIAL DISTANCING COVID-19 in South Korea Since the first confirmed case emerged on January 20, 2020, COVID-19 has reached its peak on February 29 having 813 cases which was directly related to Shinchonji religious group. However, the situation has improved much and daily infection rates went down with the proactive KCDC-level controls. As of April 6, Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) reported the national’s total number of infection cases as 10,284, (including 563 cases in Seoul) and number of new cases as around 50 to 90 a day. Currently, of the confirmed cases, around 30%-40% were cases of overseas inflow.     Chapter 9 South Korea Relatively healthy, still trying hard to adapt to digitalisation Eun-mee Kim & Jae-woo Lee Introduction South Korea is a relatively small country with a land size of 100,033 square kilometres and a population of 52 million. Despite its history of colonisation, war, and authoritarian regimes, South Korea has emerged as a liberal democracy and is well-known as one of the leading countries in developing and adopting communication technologies. Politically, South Korea is now considered a “full democracy”, moving from the classification of “flawed democracy” in 2020, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (2020) Democracy Index 2020. Freedom in the World 2021: status “free” (Score: 83/100 (Freedom House, 2021). Liberal Democracy Index 2020: South Korea is placed in the Top 10% bracket – rank 17 of measured countries and with a score of 0.78, considerably up from rank 37 in 2016 (Varieties of Democracy Institute, 2017, 2021). Freedom of Expression Index 2018: rank 13 of measured countries, considerably up from 65 in 2016 (Varieties of Democracy Institute, 2017, 2019). 2020 World Press Freedom Index: rank 42 of 180 countries (Reporters Without Borders, 2020). While these numbers show how far the country has come, South Korea has its fair share of challenges and struggles when it comes to freedom of the press and democratic media practices. News media in South Korea is saddled with a history of partnership and complicity with political power under authoritarian rule. Some of the legacy media companies that emerged in such a setting are still very much influential and thrive as cultural producers in South Korea.

Midway between men's winner Dix on (2:08:59) and womeii's winner Grete Waitz (2:27:00), England's David Clark, 40, was overtaking defen ding masters champion Antonio Villanueva, 43, to pull away to an im pressive 2:17:30 masters viawy. It was one of the fifteen fastest recorded marathon times ever turned in by a runner age-40-or-over, and earned Clark 40th place overall. Cindy Dalrymple, 41, repeated her 1982 women's masters triumph with a time of 2:44:01, 14 seconds faster than her time last year, and four minutes ahead of masters runner-up Elaine Kir- chen, 40, of New York City (2:48:34). Mexico's Villanueva got perhaps more media exposure than any veteran runner in history by sticking with the start of the World Veterans lOK Championships in Perpignan, France, October 15.     We Tell Your Story to the World South Korea Media Landscape Preface1 South Korea is one of the world's wealthiest nations, and is a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the G-20 major economies. It is a developed country, with a mature market and high-income economy. South Korea has a market economy that ranks 13th in the world by 2014 nominal GDP and is the world’s seventh-largest exporter which shipped $559.6 billion worth of products around the globe in 2013. That figure represents 3.1% of worldwide exports, which are estimated at $18.1 trillion. Overpopulation (51,218,424 as of May 2014) and a relative lack of natural resources has deterred continued population growth and the formation of a large internal consumer market. The country has adapted by implementing an export-oriented economic strategy to fuel its economy. Electronics, telecommunications, automobile production, chemicals, shipbuilding and steel are key industries in South Korea. The following items were the main export products of the country in 2013: Electronic equipment (24.2% of total exports), vehicles excluding trains and streetcars (13%), machinery (10.6%), mineral fuels including oil (9.7%), optical & technical & medical apparatus (6.4%), ships & boats & other floating structures (6.4%) etc. South Korea is a highly export-driven and industrialized economy.
