Welcome to this week’s ‘special edition’ newsletter, which has a sole focus on your child’s school uniform expectations for the coming academic year. Obviously we are well aware that this year has been a tricky one, which is why we have taken a more relaxed view of uniform expectations during this time. We made a conscious choice as a Leadership Team not to impose tight expectations during a period where children were in and out of school, as this wouldn’t have been fair financially on you as parents and carers. From September 2021 however, I want to start the academic year with all parents and carers clearly understanding that their children must adhere to the school’s uniform and PE/Forest School kit expectations. These are outlined in detail in the tables below and we have included visuals to help explain further. I am aware that this coming half-term holiday often marks the start of parents and carers starting to purchase uniform for September as there are many ‘early-bird’ offers starting to be advertised in shops. Therefore, I felt that it was vitally important to get this information to you now so that both you and your children can be properly prepared to meet the expec- tations. The reasons that I wish for all of our children to have the same, high standard in both school uniform and PE kit is that it gives our children a clear identity. This is due to the systemic failures that contribute to a lack of visibility for people with disabilities(PWDs), a lack of centralized research on adaptive clothing, and a lack of will from the fashion industry. These systemic failures have far reaching consequences for PWDs and the fashion industry.     www.ComplexChild.com Choosing Clothing for Children with Special Needs by Susan Agrawal I can't even remember how many clothing items I've received as holiday or birthday gifts that I've donated to charity because my daughter simply cannot wear them. Because my daughter cannot play with most toys, a lot of friends and relatives seem to think clothing is a good choice for a gift. What they don't realize is that some items of clothing are next to impossible to get on her due to her muscle tone, while others interfere with her medical equipment. My intent is to set forth a few guidelines for family and friends to help them choose appropriate clothing for children with high or low muscle tone, or who have motor impairments or medical equipment that makes dressing difficult. Of course, each child has unique needs, but hopefully the following general principles will be helpful in guiding purchases. Clothing to Accommodate Medical Equipment Many children with complex medical issues have what we like to call "attachments" and "piercings." These may include feeding tubes in the belly or nose, a trach, oxygen, an IV line in the arm or on the chest, ostomy bags, catheters, and gastric drainage bags, to name a few. Many children of all ages wear diapers or use wheelchairs that may restrict their clothing choices. All of this medical equipment can interfere with dressing and clothing choices.     Activities of Daily Living Activities of Daily Living The purpose of the Restorative Activity of Daily Living (ADL)/Grooming Program is to provide residents with an opportunity to attain or maintain their highest level of independence in performing ADLs.
