PLAYBILL ABOUT THE ARTISTS The foremost disciple of his father, the leg- endary Ustad Allarakha, Mr. Hussain was a child prodigy who began his professional career at the age of twelve and had toured internation- ally with great success by the age of 18. He has been the recipient of many awards, grants and honors, including Padma Bhushan (2002), Padma Shri (1988), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1991), Kalidas Samman (2006), the 1999 National Heritage Fellowship Award, the Bay Area Isadora Duncan Award (1998–1999), and Grammy Awards in 1991 and 2009 for Best World Music Album for Planet Drum and Global Drum Project, both collaborations with Mickey Hart. His music and extraordinary con- tribution to the music world were honored in April 2009, with four widely heralded and sold- out concerts in Carnegie Hall’s “Perspectives” series. Jodhpur RIFF Scheduled Program 10th to 14th October 2019 (open format listing) 10th OCTOBER CHILDREN'S FOLK MORNING 9.30 am to 2.00 pm Veer Durga Das Memorial Park, Masuriya Pahadi For schools, by invitation only Jodhpur RIFF presents a varied and wondrous morning of music, dance, storytelling and more for Jodhpur’s young ones, featuring: Kathputli - String puppetry using wooden dolls or marionettes, the kathputli goes back 1500 years and is still performed on a miniature stage with highly dramatic narration and music, retelling stories that reflect pertinent social concerns or the valour of erstwhile kings. It used to be the most popular form of children’s entertainment and though there are very few accomplished practitioners left today, it continues to hold an iconic status in Rajasthan’s culture. Ghoomer - Initially introduced by the Bhil tribe of Rajasthan and then gradually adopted by other communities, ghoomer is a dance where women in their traditional ghagra (long swirling skirt) and choli (blouse) pirouette while moving in and out of a wide circle, to the tune of traditional songs and the rhythm of hands clapping. The word ‘ghoomna’ describes the twirling movement of the dancers and is the basis of the word ‘ghoomer’. Kachchi Ghodi - A novel dance form performed on colourful dummy-horses in which men in elaborate and embellished costumes dance rhythmically to beating drums, under a large umbrella chhatarkotla- while a singer narrates the exploits of the Bhavaria bandits of Shekhawati. Young Langa musicians – For our young audiences we present young sarangiya Langa musicians, who sing and simultaneously play the exquisite Sindhi sarangi as well as other instruments such as the algoza and morchang. -

Rob Hart Trio The Rob Hart Trio is an exciting blend of organic traditional jazz, fusion, funk, latin and textural The Rob Hart Trio is an exciting blend of organic traditional jazz, fusion, funk, latin and textural experimental music, along with high-powered, on-the-edge improvisations. Established in the early 1990's the Trio has gone through a series of different incarnations of instrumentation and evolutions, taking the trio through pathways of musical adventures. San Francisco Peninsula native and Berklee College of Music graduate Rob Hart is a consummate musician, teaching and performing regularly with the Rob Hart Trio in Bay Area venues. Rob has also performed/recorded with renowned bassist Kai Eckhardt (John McLaughlin), The Isley Brothers, Antilles recording artist Dave Mann, Dave Ellis (Charlie Hunter) Larry Grenedier (Pat Metheny, John Scofeild, Brad Mehldau) Wil Blades (Will Bernard , Stanton Moore) Marc Van Wageningen (Sheila E. , Ray Obiedo) CC Deville (Poison), and Stu Hamm (Joe Satriani/Steve Vai) among others, and has been featured as an opener for legendary jazz saxophonist Bennie Maupin and seminal jazz fusion pioneers Spyro Gyra. Rob has studied with Steve Smith, Mike Clark, Gary Chaffee, and the late Tony Williams. He established the Rob Hart Drum Studio in 1985. Some of his successful students have gone on to join renowned touring bands and award-winning ensembles. Rob is an active clinician and continues to conduct various rhythm section workshops in the San Francisco Bay area. 1 of 38 Jazz Rock Fusion Surviving Four Decades and Counting… By, Rick Calic www.jazzrockworld.com March 2006 Writing an article about Jazz Rock Fusion these days might seem as pointless as debating the benefits of Hi-Fi equipment with vacuum tubes vs. transistors to someone that uses an iPod. The only people that would care are older folks who even remember tubes and dedicated enthusiasts. On the other hand, while Jazz Rock Fusion might be older or seem equally pointless to many reading this article, there remains a large but scattered segment of the world’s population that sees the genre as a vibrant and legitimate art form. Sadly though, the musical perspective regarding Jazz Rock Fusion was narrow from the beginning and will probably always be that way. Jazz Rock Fusion, in terms of the entire world of music, constitutes just a tiny fraction of interest. Yet, if we accept this as fact, which most fans, musicians and certainly “big business” does, the generation of any interest at all is meritorious. In order to discuss the music with integrity, a ground rule needs to be established. This ground rule is required due to the unsolved, long lasting, and ongoing mysteries of the music and its unique identity. Mysteries such as: What is Jazz Rock Fusion? Who started Jazz Rock Fusion? What should it be called? And finally, with no major media support why is there still a market? So, what are the answers you ask? Quite simply these mysteries will remain mysteries. Answering the questions definitively will end up as trivial as the facts regarding the creation and development of the gut bucket. -

Walter Kolosky News, Notes and Pictures “In the North” is the new album from Greek guitarist Tassos Spiliotopoulos. Spiliotopoulos, who recently relocated to Sweden, has toured in the Asaf Sirkis Trio and performed with the likes of Kenny Wheeler and Gary Husband. “In the North” is an intriguing melange of Greek, ethnic and progressive influences. The mixture is often aggressively put forward, sometimes a bit darkly- sometimes not so darkly and more appropriately restrained. The material is full of tremendous interplay, most notably heard on engaging themes and ascending and descending lines played in unison or in contrast by Spiliotopoulos and saxophonist Orjan Hulten. The able rhythm section of bassist Palle Sollinger and drummer Fredrik Rundqvist round out the impressive band. “In the North” is serious progressive world-jazz music with an attitude. It is beautifully constructed, performed and recorded. A listener is sure to be rewarded for any time invested. For a music lover, there is nothing quite like a new discovery. I just spent the last hour or so being bowled-over by multi- instrumentalist Beledo’s “Dreamland Mechanism presented is truly impressive, but that wouldn’t mean much if the material were run-of-the-mill. Luckily for us, Beledo's jazz- rock influenced compositions are packed full of surprise and wanderlust. And all the better, his bandmates- Gary Husband, Lincoln Goines, Dewa Budjana and other cool folks- are outstanding proponents. At first listening, I became curious. Now, I am hooked. -

Dear AHS Members, Welcome to Los Angeles and the Colburn School for the 2013 Summer Institute and National Competitions! The 2013 Summer Institute's "Focus on Friends" features the finest in chamber music and pop and jazz small ensembles. The Institute opens with a performance of our own AHS Concert Artist, Elizabeth White Clark, in the incomparable Zipper Hall, home of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and ends with this year's AHS National Competition winners, including the new 2013 AHS Concert Artist. In between, we have planned many opportunities for coaching, workshops and master classes. We invite you to enjoy genres from classical music of all kinds to pop and jazz, from our opening recital by Elizabeth Hainen to coaching by Heidi Lehwalder, jazz by Carol Robbins, and a plethora of other outstanding artists. When you're not enjoying harp music at the Institute or Competitions, take the time to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art and Disney Hall, as well as food and shopping at nearby Chinatown or Olvera Street!
