PLAYBILL ABOUT THE ARTISTS The foremost disciple of his father, the leg- endary Ustad Allarakha, Mr. Hussain was a child prodigy who began his professional career at the age of twelve and had toured internation- ally with great success by the age of 18. He has been the recipient of many awards, grants and honors, including Padma Bhushan (2002), Padma Shri (1988), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1991), Kalidas Samman (2006), the 1999 National Heritage Fellowship Award, the Bay Area Isadora Duncan Award (1998–1999), and Grammy Awards in 1991 and 2009 for Best World Music Album for Planet Drum and Global Drum Project, both collaborations with Mickey Hart. His music and extraordinary con- tribution to the music world were honored in April 2009, with four widely heralded and sold- out concerts in Carnegie Hall’s “Perspectives” series. Jodhpur RIFF Scheduled Program 10th to 14th October 2019 (open format listing) 10th OCTOBER CHILDREN'S FOLK MORNING 9.30 am to 2.00 pm Veer Durga Das Memorial Park, Masuriya Pahadi For schools, by invitation only Jodhpur RIFF presents a varied and wondrous morning of music, dance, storytelling and more for Jodhpur’s young ones, featuring: Kathputli - String puppetry using wooden dolls or marionettes, the kathputli goes back 1500 years and is still performed on a miniature stage with highly dramatic narration and music, retelling stories that reflect pertinent social concerns or the valour of erstwhile kings. It used to be the most popular form of children’s entertainment and though there are very few accomplished practitioners left today, it continues to hold an iconic status in Rajasthan’s culture. Ghoomer - Initially introduced by the Bhil tribe of Rajasthan and then gradually adopted by other communities, ghoomer is a dance where women in their traditional ghagra (long swirling skirt) and choli (blouse) pirouette while moving in and out of a wide circle, to the tune of traditional songs and the rhythm of hands clapping. The word ‘ghoomna’ describes the twirling movement of the dancers and is the basis of the word ‘ghoomer’. Kachchi Ghodi - A novel dance form performed on colourful dummy-horses in which men in elaborate and embellished costumes dance rhythmically to beating drums, under a large umbrella chhatarkotla- while a singer narrates the exploits of the Bhavaria bandits of Shekhawati. Young Langa musicians – For our young audiences we present young sarangiya Langa musicians, who sing and simultaneously play the exquisite Sindhi sarangi as well as other instruments such as the algoza and morchang.

The Festival of Sacred Music, Thiruvaiyaru (2015) About FOSM 2015 The Festival of Sacred Music (FOSM), a 3-day festival that takes place in Thiruvaiyaru celebrating the cultural importance of this holy ground, aims to restore the pride of the Music Centre that existed in the town at the time of Saint Thyagaraja. The festival intends to showcase true and pure forms of music, with the goal of bringing something new to the local art and music landscape of Thiruvaiyaru. It features stand-out performances by artists who are the true torchbearers of their respective fields, carrying forward the tradition of music. We at the Prakriti Foundation started the festival as a community initiative to acquaint the people of the Thanjavur district to exceptional performances and new worlds of music, and that too gratis. As with all Prakriti Foundation projects, the Festival of Sacred Music is founded on visionary principles - the idea behind conducting the festival at Thiruvaiyaru is not only to popularise music forms, but also to make the world aware of the rich heritage and tradition of the town, thereby encouraging heritage preservation and rural tourism. We work in close collaboration with Dr Rama Kausalya’s Marabu Foundation and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). The festival opens its doors to people all over the country and the world, inviting them to experience the art, culture and glorious heritage of the special place, Thiruvaiyaru and become etched in its fascinating history. NEW RELEASE O N I N T U I T I O N R E C O R D S R E C E I V E D 4 G R A M M Y N O M I N A T I O N S OREGON’s latest project, Oregon In Moscow, is a double CD with the Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, and the group’s recorded debut of their orchestral repertoire—a prodigious body of work that has been developing over the life of the band, but never documented. In the thirty-year history of OREGON, there has always existed a strong kinship to orchestral music. The use of the double reeds alone has given the quartet an identity and expansive sound associated with the symphonic orchestra. This association isn’t confined only to their use of many orchestral instruments, but applies also to the composition and presentation of the music, including the careful attention to details such as articulation, dynamics, phrasing and tone production derived from their respective classical studies. Chief composer Ralph Towner explains, “OREGON came together as a group in New York City in 1970, and from the outset it was clear that our unusual instrumentation and collective musical experience invited a different approach to composition and improvisation. The jazz tradition of improvisation usually consists of the soloists taking turns improvising on the song’s harmonic structure, recycling the chord progressions and returning to the original melody only on the last repeat of the cycle. While still using and honoring this tradition, we began composing longer, more sectional forms that allowed each soloist to improvise on different material within the context of a single piece.
