Crisis Text Line (24 hrs) Don’t want to call? Text HOME to 741741 Notes from playwright Gary Soto Our lives are unpredictable. The main characters in this play, after their deaths, find themselves living their most intense lives in the Afterlife, where they reflect on their early exits and the profound sadness of family and friends. Each young life that is lost, by violence or by suicide, is irreplaceable and precious. In this play, death is no laughing matter, but there is humor here that is wholly human. Notes from Director, Dyana Díaz What happens after we die? What happens after we lose a young life? "The Afterlife" is a collage of moments, memories and hopes regarding the loss of a loved one. This piece is created as an ode to life, honoring the beautiful and ugly aspects of being alive. No one knows when our time is ending, some will be with us for a long time and others not enough. When we lose a child or a teenager we are losing a piece of the future and possibilities. We are all affected, but we might not know it. "The Afterlife" by Gary Soto gives us the possibility of imagining, in a bittersweet way, the consequences of a teen leaving this world too early. Thanks to Chuy for sharing his youthful and simple view of the world, thanks to Crystal for remembering us that life is worth living, thanks to Yellow Shoes and Vato Loco for telling us that every action has a story behind it, thanks to Tia for showing us that a mother's love goes beyond reason, thanks to Eddie and Ricardo for being that family strength that we need in hard moments, thanks to Rachel for representing friendship, thanks to Virginia for reminding us that every life counts, and finally, thank you to Gary Soto's play, "The Afterlife" for putting all these characters together as an altar in memory to every teen that we have lost.I hope you all enjoy this adventure as much as I did during this creative process. Producer Notes by Emily Klion Like many, I was deeply affected by the tragic 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin. It made me wonder: Where did he go? How does one move from life to death in moments? Trayvon was a boy like Chuy, enjoying simple teenaged pleasures before his life suddenly ended. Thus was born the idea to create a play that explored teen death. When I approached long-term collaborator Gary Soto with my idea, we decided to adapt his young adult novel, The Afterlife into a powerful play. Gary’s novel also involves a tragic suicide. After accidents, homicides and suicide are the second and third causes of death for US teens, numbering in the thousands. What gets lost when a teen dies? The reverberations ring deeply in the victims’ families and community. Thanks to the supporters of this project, The Afterlife has had the time to grow organically from its first staged reading at UC Davis in 2017, to a workshop production in 2018, a winter tour of California high schools in2019, and an international tour to Banja Luka, Bosnia in November 2019. Thanks for the consistent artistic vision and commitment of writer Gary Soto and Directors Dyana Diaz and Cliff Mayotte, along with all the artistic designers. Above all, thanks to the extraordinary SFYT Dream Ensemble. San Francisco Youth Theatre creates cutting-edge theater for youth ages 3-24, offering classes and performance ensembles, summer intensives, school residencies and a repertoire of original productions that speak to the unique sensibilities of youth. NEW RELEASE O N I N T U I T I O N R E C O R D S R E C E I V E D 4 G R A M M Y N O M I N A T I O N S OREGON’s latest project, Oregon In Moscow, is a double CD with the Moscow Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, and the group’s recorded debut of their orchestral repertoire—a prodigious body of work that has been developing over the life of the band, but never documented. In the thirty-year history of OREGON, there has always existed a strong kinship to orchestral music. The use of the double reeds alone has given the quartet an identity and expansive sound associated with the symphonic orchestra. This association isn’t confined only to their use of many orchestral instruments, but applies also to the composition and presentation of the music, including the careful attention to details such as articulation, dynamics, phrasing and tone production derived from their respective classical studies. Chief composer Ralph Towner explains, “OREGON came together as a group in New York City in 1970, and from the outset it was clear that our unusual instrumentation and collective musical experience invited a different approach to composition and improvisation. The jazz tradition of improvisation usually consists of the soloists taking turns improvising on the song’s harmonic structure, recycling the chord progressions and returning to the original melody only on the last repeat of the cycle. While still using and honoring this tradition, we began composing longer, more sectional forms that allowed each soloist to improvise on different material within the context of a single piece.

66 ANNUAL CRITICS POLL JAZZ ARTIST JAZZ GROUP THERE’S SOMETHING PARTICULARLY APT ABOUT VIJAY IYER’S ACADEMIC TITLES AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY, WHERE HE’S BEEN TEACHING SINCE 2014: Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of the Arts and Graduate Advisor in Creative Practice and Critical Inquiry. Yes, the endowed chair is nice, but “professor of the arts” and “advisor in creative practice” seem to sum up the man. It’s fitting that the terminology here is not “jazz studies” or “theory and practice,” but rather, “the arts” and “critical inquiry.” For Iyer—winner of the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll categories Jazz Artist of the Year and Jazz Group (for his namesake sextet)—jazz doesn’t exist in isolation. Which is another reason why the appointment at Harvard, with its core liberal arts program, suits the 46-year-old pianist’s particular take on jazz, on music, on the arts and on the world. A child of immigrants, and the winner of multiple accolades—including a handful of previous DownBeat Critics Poll wins with his longstanding trio (with bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore) and a 2013 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship— Iyer began his academic career as a scientist. He was a physics and math major as an undergraduate at Yale, and his Ph.D. thesis at the University of California, Berkeley, was titled, “Microstructures of Feel, Macrostructures of Sound: Embodied Cognition in West African and African-American Musics.” So his pedagogical inclination is toward diversity, and his expansive attitude toward jazz is second nature. 24 DOWNBEAT AUGUST 2018 AUGUST 2018 DOWNBEAT 25 Jimmy & Dena Katz “This isn’t a school of music,” Iyer says, sitting read a black author or maybe they’ve never had learn how to hear in different ways and learn in his basement office in the Harvard Music a black teacher.” On the other hand, “I also have how to accommodate other perspectives.

The New Standard Quintet is a dynamic and versatile jazz ensemble based in Chicago. Comprised of 5 veterans of the vibrant Chicago music scene, the NSQ provides a truly unique musical experience with each performance. A group difficult to categorize, one of the main hallmarks of the NSQ is its diverse repertoire. The original design of the NSQ by its leader, saxophonist Ken Partyka, was to modernize traditional standards and to bring material from the world of popular music into the jazz idiom. In 2011, the quintet released its debut CD, the self produced The Many Faces. In an ironic twist, the group strayed from its original concept and recorded all original material. Following a successful CD release performance at the legendary Fitzgerald’s, an event sponsored by WDCB 90.9FM, The Many Faces has The New Standard Quintet received strong reviews and radio play, including a mark of 3.5 stars from DownBeat Magazine and the quintet has performed throughout the Chicago area building its fan base. The musicians of the New Standard Quintet are as diverse as the music they perform. In addition to Ken Partyka on saxophone, the personnel of the quintet consists of bassist Curt Bley, guitarist Pat Fleming, pianist Tom Vaitsas and drummer Todd Howell. Each of these musicians boasts an impressive performance resume. Members of the NSQ have performed at the Montreaux, Chicago, South Shore and Elkhart jazz festivals as well as the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and have recorded and performed with a “who’s who” of Chicago and national talent, including Howard Levy, Sonia Dada, Frank Mantooth, Rob Parton, Frank D’Rone, Von Freeman, Hal Russell, George Benson, Herb Ellis and even the Lieutenant Dan Band.
