It brings together a wide variety of sources in which vengefulness and the pursuit of vengeance are prominent themes. These include homilies and theological treatises, narrative histories and chronicles, hagiographies and miracle collections, vernacular poetry, and documentary sources such as law codes. Much attention has been devoted to the prevalence and mechanisms of feud in medieval society, but in this body of source material, acts of vengeance were just as likely to come from heaven as they were to be inflicted by humans on each other. This thesis examines the theological concept of divine vengeance, the ways that God’s vengeance was observed and experienced in the world in historical events and in the form of vengeance miracles, and the extent to which religious considerations affected the perceived morality of vengeance undertaken by humans. Vengeance emerges as a complex theological, moral and social issue in a society in which levels of religious understanding, engagement and belief varied greatly between different groups and individuals. This thesis argues that the idea of divine vengeance was consistently used as a rhetorical tool to support certain moral standpoints, and that the interpretation of any event as divine vengeance was never inevitable. God’s right to take vengeance for sin was an integral part of the way that the relationship between heaven and earth was negotiated, the way that events on earth were interpreted and understood, and the way that the morality of human action was thought about. There was significant religious, cultural and institutional continuity in these respects in English society between the tenth and twelfth centuries. Abstract This thesis examines a number of miracle collections and hagiographies written by Winchester monks in the late tenth century. It compares three different accounts of the cult of Swithun by Lantfred, Wulfstan and Ӕlfric, as well as comparing Wulfstan‟s and Ӕlfric‟s Vita Ӕthelwoldi. There were two main objectives to the thesis. The first was to examine whether an analysis of miracle narratives could tell us anything important about how a monastic community perceived itself, especially in relation to the wider world? This was tested by applying approaches used by Thomas Head and Raymond Van Dam to an Anglo- Saxon context.

    Saint’s Law: Anglo-Saxon Sanctuary Protection in the Translatio et Miracula S. Swithuni 1 John P. Sexton Patrick Wormald’s handlist of Anglo-Saxon lawsuits begins its gesta and miracula evi- dence with three consecutive suits from Lantfred of Winchester’s c. 972 Translatio et Miracula S. Swithuni.2 The suits, which appear in chapters 25-27, describe the trial by ordeal of a servant accused of “a certain misdeed” (quodam facinore, 25.3), the mutila- tion of a man accused of robbery, and an “arraignment of a man for appropriation of the king’s corn.”3 Although Wormald classifies the third item, like the first, as a “rescue from prison or penalty” case in contrast to the sanctuary cases he identifies in the Vita S. Edithae Virginis and De Miraculis S. Edmundi,4 the corn-appropriation or “wheat- thief” episode rightly belongs in both categories since it intentionally evokes the defin- ing characteristics of sanctuary protection in pre-Conquest legislation. The thirteen lines of the Chronicle poem are laden with toponyms and ethnonyms, prompting scholars to suggest that its main function is mnemonic. However comparison with skaldic drápur points to the communicative aim of the lists of toponyms and ethnonyms, whose function is to mark the restoration of the space defining the historical significance of Edmund’s victory. The Chronicle poem unites the motifs of glory, spatial conquest and protection of land which are also present in Sighvat’s Knútsdrápa (SkP I 660. 9. 1-8), bearing thematic, situational, structural and functional affinity with the former. Like that of Knútsdrápa, the function of the Chronicle poem is to glorify the ruler by formally reconstructing space. The poem, which, unlike most Anglo-Saxon poetry, is centred not on a past but on a contemporary event, is encomium regis, traditional for skaldic poetry. ‘The Redemption of the Five Boroughs’ can be called an Anglo-Saxon equivalent of erfidrápa, directed to posterity and ensuring eternal fame for the ruler who reconstructed the spatial identity of his kingdom.

    The Story of St Swithun A long time ago, in the 800’s and before the present Cathedral was built; St Swithun was Bishop of Winchester. There used to be a beautiful but small cathedral built by the Anglo- Saxons on this site, with blue glass in the windows, green tiles on the floor and carvings and paintings on the walls. This was Bishop Swithun’s Cathedral. Bishop Swithun was a kind man and walked all over Hampshire making sure his people were safe and had all they needed. One day he was walking over the bridge and talking to people as he went when he came across a woman stood to one side and she was crying. Bishop Swithun stopped and asked the woman why she was so upset. Between sobs the woman explained that she’d been carrying a big basket of eggs to market to sell, but there were so many people on the bridge, someone had accidently knocked against her and she’d dropped the basket, breaking all the eggs. Kind Bishop Swithun had a think and then took the woman’s hand in his and told her not to worry. Suddenly, the eggs were whole again! It was a miracle! Bishop Swithun knew he was getting old and that he wouldn’t live for ever. It would soon be time for him to go to heaven. He told those in charge of the old Cathedral that he didn’t want to be buried inside the Cathedral like the previous bishops and kings. He wanted a simple grave, outside the main doors of the Cathedral so that people could walk over his grave as they went in and out of the beautiful church and remember that they should love one another, just as Bishop Swithun had tried to do all his life.

    PAGAN SON OF A SAINT:OLAF CUARAN AND ST.EDITH -455- PAGAN SON OF A SAINT:OLAF CUARAN AND ST EDITH: A VIEW OF TENTH CENTURY TIES BETWEEN NORTHUMBERLAND,YORK AND DUBLIN by Michael Anne Guido1 ABSTRACT Though much has been written about Olaf Cuaran little is still known of his origins and his exact place in tenth century history. He has often been confused with his cousin Olaf Guthfrithsson in the early annals and chroniclers. Even his nickname of ‘Cuaran’ is debated as to its exact meaning. He became a legendary figure when he was incorporated into the twelfth century chanson of Havelok the Dane. The focus of this paper is to examine the life and ancestry of Olaf as it is presented in the Northumbrian Chronicle, Irish Annals and several pre-fourteenth century English histories with particular attention upon the dating and origins of each source, as well as debunking myths that have grown around Olaf and his mother. In this 150 year span England became one nation not a series of kingdoms. Scotland unified southern regions into the kingdom of Alba to protect themselves from the vast northern provinces inhabited by invaders. Ireland became more trade oriented2 (Hudson, 2005) and nationalism flared in Eire for the first time. All these changes occurred in response to the coming of the Northmen, the fierce raiders who came to plunder, kill and enslave the natives of these lands.
